Home Network Filter?

Hey Guys-

I need to have a network filter installed onto my network. Right now we have Cable Modem -> Router and then branches off to switches, etc... I want to make it Cable Modem - Filter - Router..

the filter then would be able to block innappropraite sites and I also need the ability to have the network automatically go off at a certain time

basically i'm looking for some software that can do this

right now i have cable modem that is plugged into a PC that has 2 ethernet cards and then from there the internet goes into the router that goes throughout the entire house.

basically i want to make it where that PC can be a filter for the entire network and will "take down" the internet.. basically block all access at a certain time i set

possible? if so how?

Can m0n0wall (http://m0n0.ch/wall/features.php) do this? The only thing that I'm not sure can be done on m0n0wall is the turn off/on the network part, but that should be easy to fix with cron or something like that....

Get one of those Christmas tree light timers... have it set to turn off at whatever time you want and come back on when you want. If you can't find anything otherwise...

You could use this m0n0wall that mkrishnan speaks of for content filtering. For the specific usage times, I'm pretty sure most routers have that option in their admin panel. I know my Netgear and old Linksys do.

As far as filtering, I have a friend that uses this (http://www.internetfilter.com/w/home) in his home. He swears by it, but I really have no idea.

As Aperture said, almost all routers have a time access control panel -- so log into your 192.168.1.1 or whatever it is for you and look for that option.

Check your router documentation ... most that I've used had options for this kind of thing built in.

Yeah, as stated above, your router should allow you to change settings so that you can filter access to specific MAC addresses at certain times of the day. You can also change your DNS Settings and use OPEN DNS (http://www.opendns.com/) to block most innapropiate websites.


edit: I have no affiliation with OPEN DNS (http://www.opendns.com/), i just use their service, and find it very useful.
