I'm not sure (just getting the widget of iStat now), but it sounds as if it's going to take off! Crazy considering it cost £1400 and that it's like a jet engine.

Mine are:

45
55
43
43
40
37
57
39

I'm only running Azureus and Safari.

What are the normal temps for a 17" MBP and if I was using iStatpro or one of the other programs when should I kick the fans up more?

under (CPU) load:

CPU A: 78
GPU diode : 74
GPU heatsink: 61
heatsink a: 56
heatsink b: 46
enclosure bottom: 38
memory control..: 53
FUJITSU, etc.: 40

using SMC fan control with min @ 4000 rpm, at 2000s it was running in the 80s.

EDIT: the keyboard is not too hot to touch, if that helps. The strip above it, particularly the left-center section is probably not for touching.

If you set SMC fan control to default, does it change the fan speed as if the system normally would?

To my knowledge, it's changing the minimum fan speed--so there's nothing stopping it from going up to 6K if it really wants to.

Not really. The fans are (for some reason) controlled by the Memory Controller's temperature. While it shouldn't be really loud, I'd imagine that the fans are going over 2000RPM.

Adamo: Have you used any fan control software? SMCFanControl? Fan Control sysprefs panel?

I am completely paranoid about the heat issue and keep everything in the 38-48 degree C. range at all times. smc fan control b'tween 2500 and 3500rpm depending on what's running. As well, i keep a teeny little fan pointed at the back vent on particularly warm days. Don't care what the specs say, processors run better at cooler temps(from what i hear) and if i can keep the surrounding components as cool as possible, i figure it can't hurt overall longevity.

the OP's temps are fine, its the second person im concerned about, however the fact that its controled by the memory controler makes sense, his is awfully hot 58c??

is that better than smc fancontrol in your opinion? I was wary to use such a program, but it seems the consensus is that it is good.... anyone know of any sideffects? (fan control seems safer)

stuff such as...
1.folding at 100%
wateva can be taken from that 100% is then used to
1. rip 2 dvd's
2. convert another dvd via airport (slow as)
3.surf, itunes, adium
4.iphoto
5. play that wierd online game, cant remember it.

I run between 40 and 60C on the CPU but my GPU is always 5 to 10C higher. I am not worried about CPU temps because thy are rated for 100C but wht is the temp rating of the GPU? I saw a unofficial post somewhere about 90C as the upper end. Mine is the nivida GeForce 8600M GT 256.
