Fellas -
Received the Mac Pro last nite -
Setup was a breeze -
Now, I just have to install bootcamp, install windows xp pro, and install 3ds max (the only program i will use with xp).
And I gotta install photoshop, illustrator, flash, and after effects on the OSX.
Coming from the PC side, i'm very impressed with this machine so far - aesthetically, it's incredible. The 30" monitor is obscene. I haven't had any time to really test it's speed, as none of the above programs are installed. After only a few minutes tinkering with OSX, I feel pretty comfortable - and I've never used it before last nite.
I still have to install the bluetooth module (#1 wire, I know!), and I have 4GB's of ram on the way from Omni ($297) - so I should be cooking with crisco by the weekend...
any other thoughts/suggestions?
I'll post some pictures by the weekend --
Thanks, again, to ALL who helped me with this purchase -

Make sure you make a sign and hold it over the Mac Pro when you take the picture. The sign should read: "I'm a traitor". lol :p:p:D
Good luck with the machine DZL. And let us know how it goes with the memory install. Be sure to use it a lot between now and then so you can get a good sense of how the performance increase really is.

haha - maybe i will take a pic with the sign!!!
i will install some pretty memory intensive software tonite, so I'll have a couple days to use it before the 4GB's show up -- I'll set up a scene, and do some test renders before/after the RAM boost.

Sweet deal! I (heart) my MacPro and I'm sure you will too.
A question about the BT module though; Was this something CTO or purchased as parts or what? I never bothered with getting the measly $29 upgrade, but in retrospect should have. Apple said they'd do the install if I lug the beast into an Apple store, but that's a ways away.
Just curious to know what you meant. -AB

Few problems with Bootcamp (I have 9GB of RAM, 8 Core 3.0Ghz Mac Pro). First Windows will not recognize more than 2GB of RAM. Second, if you have the wireless bluetooth Apple mouse/keyboard, you will have to reset them everytime you get into Windows......and you might have a few exclamation marks in device manager, but don't worry about those. Also I have the ATIX1900 and under Windows, it treats port 2 as port 1 and port 1 as port 2...and there is the crazy flicker upon boottime and sometimes I boot into a scrambled screen so I have to hard reset...but other than these, Windows is fully usable.
Good luck!

I hated Windows on the MacPro... So i dumped it and forced myself to get everything I needed done on OS X. I know this isn't an option for everyone, but it seemed every time I booted under Windows *something* was acting funny.

Works flawlessly here. I made a WinClone copy of the image of a working version. The only thing that pisses me off is the bluetooth keyboard issue (Wireless). My Wacom tablet is USB anyways, so it's only the keyboard issue. October looks ok for me if they fix this problem.

Am I missing something?
Did your system not come with the bluetooth module installed?
I was told by Apple that if you purchased it without the Bluetooth module that you could not buy that module and install it later (although you could of course get an after-market USB module).
And, what is the reference to the #1 wire?
Just curious since my Mac Pro is on the way.

People have had some luck getting apple or apple repair shops to just sell them the BT module to put in themselves. Or there is always the internet where they can be found. I personally have 2 or 3 from when compusa closed their doors (along with 1 MP wireless module, destined for my macbook or mini). If anyone needs one, 20 shipped for it , new in box.

That's good to know. They told me it was integrated to the main board. So, at least all hope is not lost if you get one without :)
The reference to #1 wire... Is that for a home-made antenna / transmitter? Or, for a connection that needs to be made?

There are three small cords on the inside of the Pro - #2 and #3 are for the Airport card, and #1 is for the BT card. Each cord is marked with a number, hence why we call them that. :)

i actually got it CTO, but it comes seperately - you have to install it yourself! (or get a genius to do it). i looked online, and it doesn't seem so difficult - just remember the 'BT' wire is not for the bluetooth - the '#1' wire is.

yeah, i noticed the flicker when starting windows - doesn't do that when i reboot in the OSX. i wish i didn't have to use windows at all, but 3ds max isn't offered for the OSX, so until I learn Maya front and back, I'm stuck with XP.
i don't have the bluetooth keyboard or mouse, so everything's fine there - just some buttons are swapped around (CTL and ALT), on some shortcuts.

if you go online - there are several places that show exactly how to setup the BT module - what's weird is, there are no directions that come with the module itself!
the #1 wire needs to be attached to the module - then the module needs to be screwed into the motherboard.

You don't need to be forced to use Maya if you're good in 3dMax...
I hope Apple fixes the RAM issue and these few quirks...are you going to run 64bit version of XP? If yes, then you shouldn't have RAM issues...you need all that RAM for your 3d APP.
To make your life much easier, here's an app that will really help you changing the CTRL/ALT keys location to whatever you're used to already:

As far as XP 64, I think you need to find the drivers yourself, because Apple does not provide them :(
So for most of the stuff you can find drivers, but some will be missing. It's worth a try I guess? There is a XP 64 trial that Microsoft has on their site....not sure how many days though, but if it works, then you can buy the retail.
3DMax and Maya are owned by Autodesk...3dMax is usually used for game creations (usually) and Maya is more towards movies, but obviously 3dMax is much older and has a bigger user base, so Autodesk does not want it to hit the Maya users...I use Cinema4D (Even though I used a bit of Maya on OSX before) and I love it. It's universal, as it was built for both Windows and Macs.
Hope this helps

i think i'll wait on XP64... yeah, i know max and maya are owned by autodesk, but a mac version of maya came out when they were still owned by alias/wavefront - so, when they were purchased by autodesk, some feared they would discontinue the mac versions. obviously this hasn't happened. max is used mostly in games/architecture; but it has started to be used for film. obviously, maya is king when it comes to film and high-end effects work.
i have a question about temperatures - i downloaded istat, and SMC Fancontrol - but what should my target temperatures be?

Are you talking about temps under OSX or Windows? Because under Windows some people have reported that under heavy use it gets really hot. I don't do really intensive stuff under Windows, so I can't say...but I do alot of processor/3d card intensive stuff under OSX. The behind of my Mac Pro gets really hot, but nothing to get mad about. The machine knows when to kick up the fans etc. The CPU and RAM are the hottest components on this system. The ATI card pushes out alot of heat too.

Ah, if you didn't buy direct from the Apple Store, that could be why.
Yep. I bet that they just had a system sitting there and gave you that system and threw the add-ons in the box.
A real custom computer from Apple ships with the options you ordered already installed.
I've never had a BTO system from Apple that needed anything installed. But, I could see a reseller trying to get away with that.
At the very least, I would demand a refund for part of the price. If you have to install it, then it was not a custom-order system. Essentially, they sent you a computer they had, and then sold you a do-it-yourself upgrade.
If you paid as much to do this as you would have to purchase the computer with that option from Apple, then I'd really be doing some complaining.
Also, since it was not built-to-order by Apple (or didn't originally leave Apple's factory with that option installed), the wireless options may not be covered under Apple's system warranty. You probably won't have any warranty on those items at all.
The system information plate on your computer (don't know where it is on the Mac Pro's) will only list the options that the computer shipped with. Those options will be covered by the warranty. User add-ons will not be. Especially if they're ones you are not supposed to be able to get yourself.
Typically, end-user upgrades will have warranties that are individual to that upgrade (from it's manufacturer). But, since this part is not a part that is supposed to be sold separately, I don't see any way of getting warranty service if that part dies.
I would definitely contact the place you purchased this, and demand compensation. At the very least a written warranty guaranteeing that they will replace the part if it dies during your computer's warranty period.

thanks, flyinmac - but what about applecare?
DZL
I would expect that AppleCare will cover the computer just fine. But, it will not cover anything that you have added to the computer yourself.
AppleCare only covers the computer as it was when it left Apple's Factory. Any BTO items would have needed to be in the machine at the time to be covered.
Now, you may have an argument if your invoice shows that the computer came with that add-on. But, that could be argued two different ways.
You could argue that PowerMax was an authorized dealer, and sold you a customized computer. But, that first depends on whether PowerMax is an authorized dealer. And, also whether or not Apple would consider that a customized computer or whether it would be considered a computer you purchased being upgraded. My bet is on the later.
By design, AppleCare covers the computer and anything it originally shipped with. But, Apple could easily argue that it did not include wireless since it was not in the computer, and especially since you installed it.
If you are buying AppleCare or already did, then I would demand some form of WRITTEN statement / warranty from PowerMax stating that they will honor that part for the entire run of any warranty you have or may add (if you add AppleCare later) on your computer.
The thing is, you should be entitled to full warranty coverage on your computer since you purchased a custom machine. They should not have sold you a stock computer and an upgrade.
Personally, I'd demand full assurances and compensation. Or, I'd send the whole thing back at their expense for a 100% refund.
Of course, check the terms on their site for purchases. You may have inadvertently agreed to a purchase with terms that just plain suck. But, if the terms of purchase didn't provide for what you received, then I would expect to have received a full custom computer that was completely assembled and fully guaranteed by it's manufacturer just like it would have been if I had purchased it directly.
I hope this helps.

I wouldn't worry about it too much DZL. The hardest part about putting in a bluetooth module is finding the #1 wire. If you can see that wire you are 90% done. Just pop it in there, screw it down and put the wire on it and your done. I have done 2 of those now. Easy.

Sure. One thing to note though. Never send in a mac to warranty with accessories. I take everything out. Ram, hard drive, everything and give them the computer stock with the hard drive and ram that came with it. That way I get it back the same way with nothing missing. Some of those apple techs need their heads screwed on correctly. Try to explain to apple that you sent in your mac pro with 16gb of ram but it came back with 1gb. Tough sell. Say goodbye to that ram.
Quick story.
I send my IBM thinkpads in for warranty work naked. NO ram or hard drive or dvd drive. NOTHING. I always get back a new machine with all the goods. Its like they don't even fix them.

Long story short... they did.
Infact they upgraded the whole computer from a T23 to a T42p. They took a month ordering it so upped the memory to 2gb for me. Not only that but I had 2 T23s and they replaced them both. in the meantime, here are some pics as promised -- nothing special, but i like a clean desk...

Valid point...
I was mainly looking at it from a warranty perspective. Making sure that he gets his money's worth and full coverage like he should.
well, i got a response this morning:
"You will not void the warranty or Applecare installing the bluetooth card."
Let's just say I'm saving that email.

Definitely save the e-mail. But, they dodged the issue a bit.
To me, the real question is whether the bluetooth card is covered by your warranty.
Installing said card shouldn't void your warranty any more than adding memory. But, the question should be whether the bluetooth / airport card you added will be covered if it should fail.
Typically, it would be covered by the AppleCare or 1 year warranty (if you didn't purchase AppleCare). But, since you added it, and it was not part of the original system, then Apple will likely tell you that you are out of luck if that part happens to fail.
See if you can get an answer on that one. That would be the real question to me.
Of course, it's also up to you as to how much you care. But, I would want to know that everything I paid for is covered by the full warranty. If it's not, then they should warranty it since they are the ones who sold it to you separately when you ordered a computer that had it built-in.
