Would I be happy with the low end MacPro Quad-Core 2.0ghz, with 512mb Graphics and 5GB memory? Or should I do my best to hold off til November? I have so many needs for it right now.

Yes do your best to wait until November 13.

Are we definitely guaranteed an update BEFORE December? Like shipping in November or earlier? And would they all have the potential of being Octo-Core?

No and yes.
Then what's the point in waiting? Just to get my moneys worth? I certainly can not wait til January for these things.

Is the 3ghz Octo Core dumb to purchase regardless any update coming our way? ... Even if money wasn't an issue?

If money wasn't an issue nothing would be a dumb purchase. :p

Core 2 Duo above 2ghz is fine for anything except extreme gaming or graphics.
Mine has 1GB Ram and runs fine.
My MBP is a 2006 model I bought as a factory refurb and I'm happy.
For what it's worth ...... Good luck.
PS - stick with 10.4.8 until the bugs are fixed in 10.4.10.

The decision has been made, just waiting on one thing... but the purchase I will be making hopefully within a day or two is this...
MacPro 2x2.66ghz Dual Core
1GB Memory - (Upgrading to 5GB)
250gb HD
ATI Radeon X1900 XT
BlueTooth
and...
MacBook (white)
2.16ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
1GB Memory
120gb HD
SuperDrive
That model of the MacPro does what I need it to do. That and I don't like to buy new generations of things. They always seem to have a problem. I'll keep you all posted on the purchse. Can't wait!

I think you'll be much happier with that, than you would have with the 2.0GHz version. Wise choice :)

Sorry man, finally made up my mind and am going to wait for the update later this year. I have to. Need something faster than what's out now. But getting the laptop today to hold me over. :-)

It's not too bad if you can get a refurb or unwanted/used machine. There are performance differences between Penryn and Clovertown though.

That's between current core 2 and penryn at the same speed to give a little idea of what things might be like.
A 3Ghz octo is likely going to last you as long as a Penryn 8 core would though.

Exactly. Lots of posts often miss fundamental logic.
People say 'well, if you're on a budget...'.
Were all on a budget!
If you aren't on a budget then you would never wait for a product update. Buy and buy again.

That's good enough for a "quote of the year"!
But, OT.... getting a 2.0 GHz Xeon would seem a bad purchase after about 6 months. The gap with newer Xeons would be too big, if you ask me.

Check out this post #613 at the HSS thread to see the new pricing reality coming November 11 (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=4057329&postcount=613). Gonna be hand me down time big time.
