I waited, I waited and no new Mac Pros. I wait no longer! Ok, at least till Friday. I purchased a 2.66 MP and I am having the Apple store install the Bluetooth, WiFi modules (get the antenna wires right guys!) and I'm also picking up 30 inch Cinema Display. 2 gig of OWC memory have been ordered. Now I need to buy one of those PC ATI 1600 video cards and get it fixed to work (thread suggestions welcome :) ) Also can anyone suggest a good battery back up?

The first suggestion would be to get the card right. It is an ATI X1900XT. Good luck and congrats (on friday).

Yea, same here, the decision has been made, just waiting on one thing... but the purchase I will be making hopefully within a day or two is this...
MacPro 2x2.66ghz Dual Core
1GB Memory - (Upgrading to 5GB)
250gb HD
ATI Radeon X1900 XT
BlueTooth
and...
MacBook (white)
2.16ghz Intel Core 2 Duo
1GB Memory
120gb HD
SuperDrive
That model of the MacPro does what I need it to do. That and I don't like to buy new generations of things. They always seem to have a problem. I'll keep you all posted on the purchse. Can't wait!

Rationalizing are we? ;)
To be far, the original Mac Pro exhibited virtually zero problems, and none serious.
Good luck to you too though.

Yea, I just need something now. Can't wait any longer. I am happy with what the machine does at work. So why not? ;)
Here's the history of my computers...
Purchased this G4 Dual 800 when it first came out and one of the processors wasn't pushed in all the way. Was only reading one.
My bro purchased one of the first rounds of the G5's and had a logic board problem.
Boss at work purchased first round of MacPro and kept getting weird internal problems.
With my luck with computers, I am bound to have something happen to a new line of MacPros. haha.
So, purchase? Here I come! :)

So your a Lucky Guy to be around when it comes to computers then ;)
Go ahead, order your MP, you wont encounter any problems, i would be suprised if you did, Then in the wee small hours, sat back in your chair, coffee in one hand, mighty mouse in the other hand, grabbing a glance of the mac pro every few minutes you will know deep down that you made the right decision - everyones waiting for updates, but i cant see them coming, not for a while anyway.

Right, I mean, it's a huge update for me to go from a Megahertz to finally a Quad Core Gigahertz machine. I will have a HUGE smile on me when I get it. And a bigger smile when Leopard comes out, and an even bigger smile when the first round of the updated MacPro's crap the bed. haha.

You certainly will be wearing a BIG grin for a long time, i switched from an old AMD windows PC, and the difference is mind blowing, But you wont be smiling when your taking delivery especially if you have to lug it upstairs as i did, the wee beastie aint exactly a lightweight but well worth it in the end, the grinning is never ending :D

same here, I've done a little research on a reflashed ATI card, but it looks like a bit of pain. I guess I'll just try out the stock card and see how it goes and hope for a cheap 1900 to fall in my lap or a updated card soon.

I don't think you are going to see anything change with the Mac Pro until next year. Apple to my recollection has not released an update of any significance that late in the year. You will be getting a great machine that has been basically flawless since it was introduced. Are you wanting to deal with a Revision "A" machine?

Yes, quite heavy. The shipping weight on the one I just ordered is 56 pounds.
I could have it shipped to where I receive my mail (I can't get mail at my house where I live).
But, since they are using FedEx, I elected to have it delivered to my door. But, my main floor is on the upper level. So, they'll get to carry it up to my main floor since the stairs are outside.
Lucky them :D

See, with my luck I will have problems with the first line of revisions when available. I think I am just gonna suck it up and buy the 2.66 one with 512 graphics... Although I'm starting to hear bad things about the 512 card. Thoughts?

I highly doubt the Mac Pro goes the entire year without an update. Even if you base it on the infallible () Buyer's Guide which considers the eight core additon an update (which it wasn't) by November 13 (MMs date) that will have been 233 days since the last one. And if we go based on the release (which is more realistic IMO) that will have been about 460 days.
Not trying to argue, but you don't know any better than we do. But based on pretty strong evidence an update is imminent and will most likely come by years end.
This Rev. A stuff is annoying. The original Mac Pro hasn't changed at all. There is no evidence to suggest Apple has changed the Mac Pro is a way that shows it was improved. Other than SMC updates.
Whats more, the original Mac Pro had basically zero issues.
In addition, what constitues Rev. A? A chassis change? A motherboard change? A processor change?
I don't see people not buying up the MBP because it went Santa Rosa. This Rev. A myth needs to die. Seriously. There isn't much evidence to suggest that every "Rev. A" product is going to have major issues.
I will also add this, a Workstation does not have to go through the amount of engineering a notebook or iMac does, heck even the Mac Mini. They are looking to make the Mac Pro thinner or lighter. Thus, the chances of having major issues is significantly decreased right there.

I was in the same struggle. Been waiting, and waiting, and waiting.
I finally ordered last week. I am sure an update has to come soon. But, soon has been next month, then nothing for a long time.
I have some things I need to get finished before the end of November (a years worth of video to get done and onto DVD). After November, I'd be unable to get caught up (new kid on the way).
So, for me, it's wait for the update and hope it's a good one, or get it now and get my stuff done before the new kid arrives (I'm the primary caregiver for our current child and will also be for the next one).
I've been putting several video projects on hold due to my G5 dying and the G4 I have being inadequate for the task for over a year.
So, it was a struggle between holding out for better, or getting it now and getting something done while I still can.

I don't need my Mac Pro now. Would I like to have it now? Of course I would. They are beautiful machines. I owned one when they were first released and I loved it.
However, today it is the same as when it was first released. I don't care about the RAID card. I don't care about the expensive octo-core upgrade. I care about the fact that the same Mac Pro I bought on 8/26/2006 is the exact same as the one I could buy today on 8/15/2006.
That is why I won't and can't buy it. It is not a value for my money. I know the Clovertown now cost the same as the Woodcrests. I know the Harpertowns will be the same as the Woodcrest when it is released.
For you, the current Mac Pro is a step up. No doubt. If you find it to be a value well theres your answer. You can play the hover over the buy button for months. To save yourself grief you should really decide now.
Buy now
or
Buy when they are updated
That is it. If you decide now. I would not buy it new from Apple. I would get a refurb or a used one. Good luck.

I don't own my previous one any longer. I sold it awhile back because I was leaving the country for awhile. I was happy with it.
And I know that if I wait I will be happy with a new one. I can't let myself buy something that is over a year old. That to me does not equal value for my money.
If you wanted to buy the 3.0Ghz Octo, yeah go for it. You would be getting the Clovertown and that chip won't be dropping until Harpertown hits. If not... I would wait.
Give it some thought. Do you need it now? I start classes Monday. And while I would use it a ton if I had it, I know I have things to do to keep me busy while I wait. I am also upgrading to the D200 in a month or two. So I will have tons of shots to process when I do get it. :)

In my case, I guess it probably helped that I saved a few hundred due to my wife's discount.
But, that would also apply to the upcoming machines.
I almost jumped on the new iMac. But, I would have invested more in the iMac to get what I needed (was looking at a 2.8 GHz iMac). With the price so close, I went Mac Pro.
With the Mac Pro, the following key areas swayed me the Pro route:
1) Can blow the dust out without taking it to a shop
2) Upgrading the hard drive does not require removal of the monitor
3) All repairs out of warranty can be made by myself (unless I have trouble locating a main board).
4) Everything but the main board can be replaced with parts off the shelf if I had to.
The difference in price for the iMac and the fact that any upgrade (aside from memory) or hardware failure mandates a shop service, swung me to the Pro instead (especially since I need to blow the dust out monthly - which I would have to pay a shop for with the iMac).

To be blunt. You would be ripping yourself off paying full price. Just my opinion of course. They are no longer worth $2500. If you are a student go for that discount or even ADC.
Refurbs are often better than new ones. As they are inspected very well. There is no reason not to trust a refurb. That is up to you of course.

It will arrive in a few days (maybe Monday). So, I haven't used it yet.
I am sure that when the new model comes out I will say "If only I could have waited".
But, simply put, it is still more machine than I need. I could do with a single core, 2 GHz, and 2 GB of RAM with 100 GB hard drive.
I really could do with an iMac.
Quite honestly, the biggest reason I went with the Mac Pro is that I can easily open it and blow the dust out every month. I would have to remove the iMac's screen and likely visit a service center and pay them to do the same thing with an iMac.
Cheaper to go Pro than pay a shop to blow the dust out every month.
I can open any $200 PC, but you gotta get a $2000+ Mac to remove the cover without risking damage. But, so be it.
Sure, I'll always want the best machine. But, the one I just ordered will do what I ask of it for many years to come.

Not a student, but can get the discount. ;) ... I think I will just stick to my original plan and wait and hope for something by end of September. Who knows, Apple is crazy sometimes and could make some type of announcement and surprise us all. Not likely, but could happen. One of my big jobs comes in November 17th. But will also have small projects in October, that I guess can be done on this POS for a while longer.
You're right. Why waste all that money on something that will soon be "slow." lol And I'm sure in the end both of us will talk again and say, "yes, now that was worth the wait." .... right?

Yea, I need the machine to push everything its got. So I think I'm gonna do my best and wait again. If an hour video takes 20 minutes to encode on the 2x2.66... I would rather have it take 10min on a 4x2.66. Cause I'm encoding stuff none stop for the work that I do. I can't take this pressure. Sucks.

To help. It took me awhile to get over the fact that I couldn't buy it right now right after I decided to buy again. It took about... a month. I mean it was still bothersome. But I was completely over the current one. I knew I couldn't buy it. My only frustration is in that there is no update yet. But, I like that as it means we could get Harpertown.
Also, like I said before. Decide soon. If you keep switching back and forth between the two ideas you will only frustrate yourself. And the longer you wait the harder it is to buy since it would be "closer" to the update.

Refurbs are a toss-up.
Some are good, some are great, and some are terrible.
My last refurb was an iMac G5 and arrived with physical damage to the case (a big chip in it). The damage was not caused in shipping, it was there when it shipped (quite obvious).
It also had a dead ethernet port right out of the box. So, I lost use of it right away because it was in the service center within the hour. I had to wait several days for a new logic board to arrive and be installed (the only option Apple would offer me).
But, when I took it out of the box, I also had a huge cleaning process ahead of me before I even set it up to find the dead ethernet port.
The monitor had huge scuff marks on it's surface, and required a lot of diligent scrubbing to remove them.
The case was filthy dirty. The center ring in the back of the stand had some smeared and embedded smears of some former grime (came off with 409 cleaner).
The cords were all used, and had scuff marks and streaks all over them (cleaned them up).
The mouse was very chipped-up, and looked well abused. It also had a sticky clicker. I finally got them to replace it about 2 months later.
They also after much arguing finally replaced the chipped portion of the case.
But, then after that the backlight started flickering.
Then, the LCD screen started etching images from too much heat (not the image persistence you hear of, but etched like it would be if you drew it with a razor blade).
The etching was in the pattern of anything that remained on the screen for about 5 or 10 minutes (the heat just cooked it into the surface of the screen). This was verified by the shop. Fortunately, they agreed to replace the screen as well.
The tech joked that I pretty much had a new computer at the end.
Since so much was wrong with it physically and functionally, I was glad I had paid refurb price and not new price.
Other than that, the one other thing that I would say is that the refurb arrived in packaging that was very much inferior to the standard new packaging (I had previously purchased a new one).
The new packaging holds everything very securely.
The refurb packaging is not as secure, and a lot of things are just loosely placed in there.
As for the Mac Pro, the refurb doesn't come with WiFi or BlueTooth. And, you cannot add them later. So, if you want those, you'll have to go new (I asked when I ordered).
Anyway, if you go with a refurb, you could get a great package. But, you may not. It all depends on what they send you. Maybe the bad one will get you, maybe it won't. Just depends.
Oh, and for the record, the G5's continued to be problematic for me. So, I no-longer have them. Been getting by with a G4 Mini that I had before.

I have never had issues.
But of course it can happen. If it does, demand a new one. I wouldn't have gone through the repair hassle. Give me a new one is what I would say.

Welcome to the club
Don't flop on us... even if you do, we will accept you when you come back ;)
I won't flop.... yet. Nahhh, I will do my best to wait and stop complaining. I think I can wait. Just don't want them to come out in January.

It would have been over nearly 17 months since an update at that point. I highly doubt it. 17 months with the same video card and super cheap quad-core chips. I would be pissed at that point.

Yea, can't wait to pick it up tomorrow. My 12" Powerbook literally blew up. Hard drive is gone, been trying to rip it apart and throw a new one in there. Can't wait to play my old PC games on it tomorrow. So exciting!

Wait... stop logging onto Macrumors and all the others every night and just set a date.. say November 15th, 2007 to check the Apple site for a new Mac Pro. Thats only 90 days away... If nothing is updated by then... you, me and 20,000 others in here will be going to Best Buy to buy a windows based intel Q6600 machine with 4gb of ram and a screaming video card for under $1200 (it is now 2040.. priced it out tonight) and screw you Apple.. enough is enough.. same machine and same price as one year ago.. yeah.. profit is one thing.. but man, their material cost on this machoine now has got to be 30% less than a year ago... easy.

This is the one reason I pulled the trigger. I sit here typing on my G4 PB 15" that is about 3.5 years old. I was getting paranoid with every sound emanating out of it or feeling how hot it gets, I can't afford to be without a computer.
