...if I didn't have a PowerPC Mac. My machine is only about 3 years old and already I feel like a second class citizen of the Mac community. :(

I think the move to use current technology is a good idea.. Old technology is always second class to current. G4's couldn't cut it, that's why they went to intel. I'm glad that they have utilized the power in the computers to make an amazing new iMovie!

iMovie '08 runs on PowerPC Macs. Granted it requires a G5, but that's PowerPC, and there are G5s that are 4 years old now.

Anyway, I've never been a heavy iMovie user, as I use FCP, but for me, I think iMovie '08 is a much better fit. For complex jobs, I have no problem using FCP. For simple/quick jobs, the simpler/quicker the better and iMovie '08 seems like it will make throwing simple movies together really easy. I do hope the skimming feature makes it's way into FCP and the other FCS apps.

I don't own the new iMovie, but ive tried it and I like the old one better because of effects. But I like the organization of the new one.

I prefer, in this order:

1. A future evolution of iMovie 08 that has an optional Effects pane containing the missing video and audio control. (Which is how I think it will be--iMovie 08 is young and will grow a lot--yet can still remain simple, with the added extras not forced in your face.)

2. The option to use either one, because iMovie 06 is still offered to iMovie 08 owners. (Which is how things are currently.)

3. iMovie 06. (For MY needs, including silly music videos that makes use of the effects!)

4. iMovie 08. (But I'd recommend 08 over 06 for most OTHER people's needs. Most iMovie users I know would benefit from quick-and-simple and don't use the effects.)

Why the hell did they not put Share to iDVD Back in?!! surely if the aim is to do things quickly, this is a no-brainer!

yes you can. if you install ilife '08 and you already have '06 then it goes into a folder called iMovie (Previous Version) in your Applications. If not, apple offer a free download of '06 to '08 users.

The biggest factor for me is AVCHD support. I actually prefer the feature richness of iMovie 6, but finally being able to use my camera with my Mac is a huge boon.

I agree totally. The whole idea of imovie is to be able to knock together some home movies easily, which i believe imovie 08 does better. I think it will be far easier to use for first timers.

Having said all that I still think its a pity if you have grown up with imovie 06 only to find its been completely changed, loosing some of its features in the process.

I've never tried iMovie; I erased that part of iLife 06 because I have Final Cut Express.

Looking at the results of the polls, I think it follows the usual trend of the mac crowd. People are afraid to be critical about any new product apple makes. Having used the new iMovie I can testify that it is complete and utter garbage. Don't get me wrong, I love apple, the old iMovie HD had its own share of problems too, but at least it was somewhat useful. The new one is almost more confusing and gets rid of the interface that all the new mac switchers who spend a bit of time getting used to it loved. Now they have to start all over again. Also like it has been said export to iDVD was a great feature. wtf is the reason for getting rid of that? Also it does run fine on G5's. It bewilders me why apple couldnt get it to run on later G4's. Its not as if its better quality video being used than iMovie HD for the most part. My 2 Cents.

I thought everybody was just complaining, but I can't even get it to run in Leopard on my Mac Pro. Everything else works fine, but it crashes on start every time. iDVD '08 did that too, but after a pref delete and reinstall, it worked fine. iMovie HD '06 works fine, and can actually export to DVD, which is all I need it for. I have FCS, but it's nice for the quick and dirty stuff.

Got iMovie '08 to work on my iMac, but it still doesn't look very good and crashes when I try to change the Preferences.

I like iMovie 08 better, but agree it feels half finished. It's like a concept of things to come more than anything else. I love the fact you can organise video... this has always made sense to me.

Yeah, but there are G4s that are 2.5 years old... What about those poor folks?

Then there's me... my G4 is 5.5 years old and I'm broke as all hell so WTF do I do?!

I like some things better in '06, but I do like the ease of '08, especially when only using part of a clip. So for me, it depends on what kind of project I am working on as to which one I use.

08, all the way. So much easier and faster to get things done! I edit simple videos, like a YouTube podcast, or a video review. iMovie '06 takes FOREVER to do anything. Time to render effects, time to import. Exporting time is atrocious (iSquint is literally 3-4 times faster). So much bloat; probably because the app was written for OS 9 in Carbon, then ported to OS X (still Carbon) and then ported to Intel.

08 is a huge timesaver and I feel I even get better results. Plus it supports ridiculous amounts of soundtracks (I threw 14 MP3s over one video clip just to test), while iMovie 08 only allowed two.

Yes, the effects are gone, but the much better editing methods, skimming, video library, and GREATLY increased speed is worth it to me.

I found iMovie '08 frustrating compared to Movie maker to say nothing of previous versions of iMovie

If you think iMovie 08 is harder to use than Windows Movie Maker, you need to have your head checked.

Colorspace--

Exactly! I noodled with 08 at the Apple store, and even the store folks were pretty lukewarm about 08.

No timeline in 08? WTF is that? No effects? Sheesh......one more pathetic effort to push us upstream to FCP, eh? No more export to iDVD? Come ON!

Oh well, I guess even Apple screws up now and then--at least the new Macs (iMacs, MBPs, etc) are good, as is the new iWork (yes, including Numbers...for me at least!).

Best,

Bob

It doesn't seem like there should even a debate or controversy of whether iMovie 06 or iMovie 08 is better. Both are available, you can use both. If you like iMovie 06, use that... if you like the new offering of `08, use that.

I'm sure `06 has it's uses and `08 has it's uses.

There should have been an option: can't install as have a G4 Mac.

I haven't had a chance to see the new version because my Mac is a G4. However, I'm a little annoyed that it doesn't even have the same featureset! I have Final Cut Express, so I have a better program (even if it needs to be completely rewritten with new technology), but I use iMovie whenever I want to do something funky and simple, with all the effects. Yes, the effects instantly stamp 'Made in iMovie' all over any film, but they're fun. And I don't think iMovie 6 is a pain to use (although any extra speed is welcome).

Everything on the Mac is getting dumbed down and I it doesn't need to be! Why do we always get forced by Apple into doing something a certain way? And what's new about drag and drop in iMovie? It's there in 06. It's already simple to use.

I'm horrified to see that they've slimmed down the feature set so that a 2-year old monkey can make a film. We paid money for this. Give us the same features, and make it simple to use, but make sure it's not so dumbed down that it makes it limiting.

Please tell me I'm wrong! I don't want to buy my new Intel Mac now.

I still need to get myself a copy, but I think I'll like iMovie 08 better. I have Final Cut Express, which is good for anything more advanced than slapping together clips with transitions and titles. Maybe I'll keep iMovie 06 for the effects, but I think iMovie 08, with some more updates, will rock.
I would even dare to say that iMovie 08 stimulates people to make better videos. By making the standard clip duration 2 seconds, people may reconsider putting in a 4 minute shot of people dancing at a wedding. Also, giving them an overview of everything they shot, they may start thinking less chronological, and more story oriented.

You would never catch me using anything else than a Mac, but I am very disappointed at them for having left the G4's out of the loop, when in fact G4's are perfectly capable of running iMovie 08 still (the newer g4's). It is only a scheme to get the G4's out of people's hands and have us all buy new shiny Intel Macs! Next thing you know None of the next iLife09 and iWork 09 will run on PowerPC Macs. Available only on Leopard, so good night Lil tiger kitty.

I can't believe they took out DVD export. So it's no longer designed for making your home videos?!!

Not everyone wants to make crappy YouTube videos. Considering the traditional user of iMovie, it was the perfect solution to making professional-looking home videos with the minimum of fuss, out of the box. And it pissed all over Microsoft's lame copycat Windows Movie Maker.

Ok, so now Apple has provided the old one again for download. Yippee. But what about those of us who wanted an update to our old friend '06? What about more effects, more features, etc? (And to remind you guys, I have FCE and, while great, is completely different, even lacking some of the things you can do with iMovie).

iMovie '08 sounds like it's been built as a YouTube film maker and not the traditional movie-making editor is has always been. Considering that now we have to make do with both versions, it just illustrates how iMovie '08 should have been given a different name. It is not even a complete replacement or arguably even an upgrade - more a downgrade.

What a mess. :(

I hate it how they got rid of per frame editing. I mean you can't change the selector (yellow rectangle thing) frame by frame, and you can't adjust the audio fade out manually, in the old one it had the master audio volume track!

Grrr.

I like everything else about iMovie 08 though.

I have not used either iMovie 06 or 08 more thasn starting it up and playing with it. I have read the workflow suggestions to get AVCHD content into 06/FCP via 08. That is very un-Apple like to not simply have importers for 06 and FCP.

That said, the thing that impressed me about 08 was the video showing the selection paradigm, which I believe is the central point of 08. If that selection method could be transitioned as an option for FCP and 06 or if features of 06 can be transferred to 08, the whole movie ecosystem could be improved, if not simplified. I for one hope iMovie 10 can replace iMovie 06 and 08 and FCE.

iLife 08 commercial?

It's Mac and PC. There is a sharply dressed woman executive standing next to Mac, she's iLife 06. Mac hands her a pinks slip. "Sorry 06 we have to let you go." And 06 says says "But I thought I was doing so good!" And Mac says "You were great but we need to upgrade"

A stereotypical bubble headed blond with a great body giggles her way on to the screen. Mac "Meet iLife 08!" 06 "This is my upgrade?" Mac, "Yeah, doesn't she look great?" PC "Wow! Now this is more like it! Say Mac think you can get me a date?"

In the second spot with 08 giggling and filing her nails, PC asks her "So are you as compatable as 06" 08 "I dunno know." PC "Do you have any special effects?" 08 "Huh?" PC "Would you like to see my Vista?" 08 "Okay!"

Nice to know someone else thinks that, too. Out of the 6 apps bungled in iLife '08, I use only one. With FCStudio, iMovie's not worth the hassle. I did like the GeeThree effects in former iMovie, but that's no longer an option.

I personally use iMovie 06. I do AMVs (Anime Music Videos) meaning I need to trim clips over and over again. The whole "Render every clip every time you do anything" Concept doesn't do it for me. And I can't encode all my video to FCP format, simply because I have about 25 GB of free space. When I get an external drive enclosure and my space goes up about 250 GB, Final Cut Pro will be an option.
