WD 500 gig external drive won't MOUNT!!!?!

I have a Western Digital external drive that is mac compatible and well it worked with my dad's MBP but it won't work on my iMac. For some reason it won't mount when i turn on the drive and a slight hum comes from the drive and the light in the front just stays the same the whole time....what do i doo??? im open for suggestions :D

I think its the 10.4.10 update that has been documented to not work with USB HD and even firewire, I will give you a guide to backrolling the USB drivers but cant guarantee it would work since my system read it for a bit then froze.
