Airport Extreme speed fluxuation

I've just bought an airport extreme to use with my 802.11g laptop. The signal keeps dropping to 1 or 2Mbps at which point the internet stops working. After a 20 seconds or so the speed goes back to 54Mbps and then slowly dropping back down again. All the latest firmware is installed and I never had this problem on my old router. Any ideas?

What sort of laptop do you have? Is there another machine you could test the AirPort with? 🙂
 
I have a 3 year old hp which was crap when I got it. The only other wifi enabled device I have is my xbox 360 which does connect seem to connect better. But as I said I was getting a better connect before with the old router. Hmmmmm. I'll try moving the airport around a bit, see if it makes a difference.
