If Apple offered a dual 1.8 GHz PowerBook @ $2549, I'd consider one! ;)

Truth be told, I think I'd probably jump ship from the 2 to the dual 1.8, simply because I can't fathom the speed difference of a few nanoseconds... so I'd save $500 for a chance at an "almost the speed of light" machine, and just lie to my friends that didn't know better and tell them it was the 2 Ghz :)

...and buy an extra 2.5 Gigs of RAM (crucial.com). For most purposes that would impact performance far more than the extra 10% processor/bus speed.
The only downside would be the slower video card, which unless you're a gamer shouldn't make much difference.

someone mentioned that by bringing out a dual 1.8, apple would be losing money from people downgrading their orders from the dual 2.0s.
But this poll shows lots more people who weren't already ordering would place orders for dual 1.8s. It would seem Apple would sell more products and make more money this way.

Haven't ordered anything yet but I have been planing on a single 1.8 - if this came out I would get it though. :)

I'd get the dual and use the extra
$ for memory.
what would the price structure be for the pm line if there was a dual 1.8?
btw, i found this. its about a gateway portable music player. pay attention to the amount of music/files it holds and how it got into the game "early". try not to laugh too hard.

eh.... can't really base much on the "I would order a 1.8" if they haven't ordered a machine.

Come on, man! Get your priorities sorted out.

I'd do the dual 1.8 to save some cash over the dual 2.0 for sure. The difference I'll get will be insignificant, considering I'd be making the jump from a G4. ;)

i would buy one if i had the money, right now i just dont have the money and $2500 is too much for me

I would make a big difference in price and the speed wouldn't be all that much a factor - provided everything else stayed the same - cache, etc.
I'm planning on buying a G5 and will go with the dual 2.0, but I might end up waiting until rev. B comes out so there might be a few other options available by then. The big thing for me is Panther coming pre-installed on the machine.....:D

I would also be making the jump from a G4, in more ways than one. Not only would I go from G4 to G5, but also from notebook to desktop! I agree with Mr. Anderson about waiting for Rev. B since I want my G5 to have Panther preinstalled. For this reason I have not ordered yet.

I'd much rather wait for the 980 which will be out next year.

All depends on what you plan on doing. I need a new machine, so I'll force myself to wait for rev. B. And there is no guarantee that the 980s will be out next year.

I'm not going to change my order. I'll stick with the dual 2.0. I want to get the top of the line machine for once.

I'm still saving my pennies for whatever the heinous price tag on the 2x3.0GHz machine happens to be -- if it's truly unattainable ($5500+), then I think that the 2x1.8GHz might be a good compromise.

If the dual 1.8 would sell for $2549, what would the educational price be?
I would assume it would be in the $2399, a median between the single 1.8 and dual 2.0 ghz models.
And, for $2699 (the educational price), why not plunk down an extra 3 bills and get "the worlds fastest personal computer"?

I checked the 'would order dual 1.8' because right nowI don't have the funding for a full order I'd want with a 2.0. I mean I want the 2.0 & a 23" Cinema HD Monitor. But if it was Dual 1.8 I'd go with it and the 20" monitor I could use an old CompUSA card and do the 0% interest thing for a year or something

I think I am going to wait for the dual 3's. It's within a year supposedly and I haven't even had my current machine a year yet. PLus I have to save save save unless you are all rich and generous. Hell I'm still waiting for breast augmentation $donations$ to come in.
coo.. no longer a newbie. I must have too much time on my hands.

I haven't ordered a PowerMac G5, nor do I plan to, but if I were going to buy one, a dual 1.8 would probably be what I would get, if that was an option.

If I weren't in college I'd love to get a dual 1.8/2.0 GHz G5, but moving around so often and limited space in the dorms makes a desktop harder to deal with than a nice PowerBook. It's a shame, for the price of a new PowerBook, I could have one hell of a G5 system...but for me, anything would be a step up from my 400 MHz G3 and OS 9.2 :)

Well, I'm in the same boat...have the 1.8 picked out, but haven't placed the order.
Money per se is not the issue. What is the issue is that my wife says that I have to pay for it with my backlog of business travel vouchers which I haven't filed the paperwork yet!
No tickie, no laundry...so no order placed yet. And back on the road again next week, and the two weeks after that, then maybe a break, then 3 more weeks out. By the time I get back for a stretch home in October, the real G5 deliveries will have hit and the performance reviews will be out, and maybe a few other interesting trinkets to buy. I'll also have enough backlogged vouchers to spring for a 23" Display, too...

I haven't ordered a G5 yet. Prefer a desktop model. I agree with Mr. Anderson that I would like to have Panther preinstalled. May also wait for Rev. B, to see what occurs at MWSF!

I would keep my origonal 2.0ghz order. It would be a good idea to introduce another dual model though.
