Wow they look terrific! Monitors look gorgeous glassy. and the keyboards are to die for.

Uggg, you just HAD to bring up the glossy screen subject, didn't you :eek: Just kidding.

Yeah, the computers (in my opinion) are amazing. My beautiful (and probably too big) 24" iMac arrives on Monday. I CAN'T WAIT!!! :D

They are surely a lot better looking and it would seem to me the black frame would focus your mind on the screen, the chin from previous iMacs had always bothered me.

The chin doesn't bother me on the 24" as much as it did on the 17" (for obvious reasons). However, yes, these iMacs look a lot better. Although the chin is only slightly smaller, I feel that the black screen (when off) and the black border (when on) take away from focusing on the big chin.

Hey. You were able to use your new beauty a month before I was! Plus, the white versions are still wonderful machines. Just because a new version was released doesn't mean the performance on your current one suffers ;)

I played around on one at the Apple Store, and it was fully loaded. Crisp, fast redraws, nice keyboard, beautiful styling and build.....but I hate to bring up a sore subject. The glare is a deal stopper. Unless you work in a dark room or can control the ambient light, that is.

I will reserve most of the glare discussion for the huge forum topic that already exists, however, to each their own with this glare deal. Each person reacts to it differently. Most can focus right past it and never have it bother them while a few cannot keep from looking at the glare all day long. The facts are that most of our homes (where a majority of iMacs are) are not lit like a giant glowing Apple showroom and most of us don't place our iMacs under a nice bright spectrum spotlight to showcase our computers -- so in an Apple showroom where things are meant to sparkle (including iMac glass screens), it really isn't a good place to form a judgement on the reflections.

Hell most new TV's are glossy and you don't hear anyone complaining about that...

The reflection is pretty much non-existent on my machine. The only time I see any reflections at all is if the kitchen door and the study door are open. Pretty easy to fix, close at least 1 door.

Yep, I'm really enjoying my 2.4 20 inch iMac. The keyboard is surprisingly good, and the reflections haven't been the issue that some are making it out to be.

But if you have control over ambient light, then this is one great little machine!!

I saw the new iMacs at the Apple store the other day as well. I was overall VERY impressed. The keyboard is tactile, hardware is very responsive and the gloss doesn't bother me at all.

Oh how I long for one of these beautiful suckers to replace my aging first gen iMac G5... :(

When I walk into Sams club and look at all of the big flat screen TV's almost all have a glossy screen.

These TV's may not be the best on the market, but this is what Americans are buying

These TV's may not be the best on the market, but this is what Americans are buyingCheaper LCD displays benefit from the glossy fix allowing better user experience with cheaper panels. The glossy screen on the MacBook Pros are not the same as the iMac. The iMac has a lower quality LCD with a glass cover. The MacBook Pro has a glossy LCD.

Yes, the imac screens suck. I checked out them at the apple store and the viewing angles complety are horrid. My $500 dell 24" is 10K times the LCD those things are. They really goofed the imac line up puttiing in crappy displays like that.

The panel used in the 24" iMac is the same used in the Dell 2407WFP.

So please explain how your panel is 10X as good? IT IS THE SAME THING!

Yes, the imac screens suck. I checked out them at the apple store and the viewing angles complety are horrid. My $500 dell 24" is 10K times the LCD those things are. They really goofed the imac line up puttiing in crappy displays like that.

Apart from the yellow tint on my screen I'm very impressed with the 24" panel. It's much better than I expected. Not as good as the high end panels, but definitely as good or better than the dell 24".

The panel in the 20" however seems to be pretty bad.

Oh and about the glare. I think it can be a problem if you have bright lights or a big window behind you.

But I have a windows right beside my desk and with my matte screen I couldn't see anything when the sun was shining right at it, but with the glossy iMac the screen is very readable, although I would perhaps not do graphics/photo work under that condition, but at least I can do something.

A huge amount of people just use their computer for light photo use, web surfing, e-mail, word processing, etc. When they read these comments, they immediately think the screen is junk. In their case, the quality is perfect for their level of use.

Just to add to this, a good percentage of PC users I know are quite happy with their low-cost TN panels. While it may not be the best technology for every purpose, it is widely used and accepted by the masses.

Very true. It will do fine for most people. That said, a lot of those people would certainly enjoy a better quality panel for the same price. But I guess they had to cut corners somewhere.

when i walked into the store today and saw the new iMacs for the first time, i thought 'whoa.. they're gorgeous'!

that lasted about 1.34 seconds and then it was onto checking out how the new keyboard is (fantastic) and watching a few 1080p movie trailers on the 24"

what then occurred to me is that we now take it for granted that Apple will have amazing drop dead gorgeous (ddg TM) designs which means that the bar is raised higher and higher the better they do

I guess we're seeing this in the pro laptop space where seemingly, there is nowhere to go in terms of improving the design of macbook pro's, only thinner and faster as tech stuff improves

what's the next big thing in hardware design?? Aluminium and glass???
