Last I heard was september, I hope its at least that if not earlier. Of course I dont want them to rush and put out a crappy product.

Don't be silly and spread false rumors, no-one knows when it's coming, because this time Steve Jobs said "before the end of the year" instead of "end of September".
I never liked the new icon selection, but that's a great improvement. Still don't like it, it looks kind of childish (as in we don't know how to use our computers) but I suppose it's something you get used to.
Expose smoother? It's already damn smooth, I wonder if it'll get even better by GM (I guess yes due to Quartz/OpenGL/Graphics Driver improvements). But there's one thing smooth isn't, and that's...snappy :cool:

expose may be smoother on slower systems maybe? i hope it's like that because some of expose won't run on my iMac. i guess my graphics card isn't fast enough.
it will probably be releaed or announced for release at Apple Expo Paris.
s long as it's before october i will be fine:)

heh.... actually other rumors (http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2003/07/20030709090656.shtml) have hinted at September.

Have they confirmed the price? I bought Jaguar, would I have to buy Panther or there will be an upgrade version (although I really don't like buying upgrades, cause you have to install one and then upgrade it...).
I know that amazon.de is already accepting pre-orders for panther, but not amazon.com...
Thanks

I think September was one of the original target dates. However, at WWDC they (or Steve Jobs) said "...before the end of the year." To me, that sounded like a slip in the schedule, so I don't expect that we'll see Panther for several more months.
about the selected icons: as long as a selected icon doesn't slow down older systems by draging it around, it's okay with me.
new os'es do look like lego or playmobile - very friendly for children (especially xp:(
i miss somehow more minimalism in the appereance of osX, too.
things like expose look and feel very clever indeed!!!
and after all, i want to hug this panther :)

What is in the Welcome/Registration Window now? So long as Apple never goes the way of MS with Activating Windoze and Serial Numbers, I'll be happy...

I believe it is the same Welcome/Registration screen we have always had. Just in a window rather than taking over the whole screen.

I cannot wait for Panther to be out almost as much as I cannot wait for a new PowerBook. By the time they do release the new PowerBooks, Pather will be preinstalled from the look of things. That'd save me $80 in the education discout of upgrading later, so perhaps there is an upside to PowerBooks being so delayed. :)

I've posted this before, and it's just my opinion, but I think people are taking the "before the end of the year" too literally. They said the same thing about iTMS for Windows: "before the end of the year". This, to me, is simply Applespeak for "we're not going to tell you, in advance, when product X will be released. It's part of the secrecy that Apple has always adhered to with regard to product launches.
Considering how good the latest build looks, there's no way on earth it's going to take another 4 months to get this puppy out the door. I'm thinking two more seedings, tops, and the second one could very well be the GM, or very close to it. So, mid-September looks likely to me.

I would love to believe that Panther will ship in September. But why the hard work for 10.2.7 to get the G5's out the door and 2 weeks later ship Panther where all those who pre-ordered will have to pay 19.99 for a free update. Seems like a good way to piss off people.
I think 10.2.7 will make it into late August G5's and Panther will undergo a few more revisions and make its debut in October or Novmber once the initial G5 are out there and perhaps, after a new powerbook rev. Of course, at THAT rate it would be next July..... <sigh - year of the laptop....>.
I just cannot see why 10.2.7 which is still not GM would com out so soon before 10.3 and shipping G5 machines.

Well 10.2.7 is not only for G5s from what I understand. It is just an update to Jaguar that can accommodate the 64bit architecture of the G5 machines. Maybe I am wrong though. And in any case in Paris they may just announce the date of shipping rather than release the product. IMHO I am not so sure that Panther will be available by mid september anyway. I dont know about 7B28 but the apps in 7B21 are a long way from stable.

Yes, there are non-G5 changes in 10.2.7. It's mostly updates to i/o components (F/W, USB, etc.).
7B28 appears to me to be much improved, compared to 7B21.

Keep in mind what the B in 7B28 means.
Beta.
But then again, if it were *almost* done, as in ship in a few weeks, it would be 7FC17 (or something like that... Final Candidate)...
So no, Panther is not imminent yet.

Thanks for posting the name of the artist, I've alway wanted to know, because its pretty darn cool. The WWDC release has it, and since X .0 had it, I don't see why they would change it for this release.
Panther is really cool and fast. Expose runs nicely on my 900 ibook. I know a bunch of geeks that thought genie minimize was insane, imagine there expression to Expose. I just wish there were mouse gestures.
The speed difference to me is so different that I can't stand booting into Jag. I've noticed this especially in MOHAA Spearhead, unfortunately, its not as stable as Jag quite yet.
I'm gonna have to buy this one.

I guess that's why 10.2.0 was 6C115. And, of course, that's why:
10.2.1 = 6D52
10.2.2 = ??? (can't find it anywhere)
10.2.3 = 6G30
10.2.4 = 6I32
10.2.5 = 6L29
10.2.6 = 6L60, and
10.2.7 = 6R34.
My point is, there's no hard rule for the letters, other than there's only one.
Note that 6C115, aka 10.2.0, was posted as a developer seed on ADC on August 1st,2002. The same release was shipped to the public as GM on August 23th, 2002.

Argh, another 48 hours until my Panther 7B28 download finishes... downloading it at 8k/sec isn't fun... oh well, 7B21 will have to do for the time being... let's hope 7B28 has some bug fixes...
BTW in 7B21, Exposé has changed from the original WWDC Panther seed: when you want to see the desktop and move the windows out of the way they'll still be visible in a 15-pixel border around the screen and under the menu bar, and when clicked it restores the windows to their original positions... very cool!

well, the whole purpose of seeds is for apple to be able to find bugs easier, and so then developers can have thier apps tweaked for it when it comes out.

I don't know how well Expose will run, but your graphics card sounds like a Rage 128 Ultra which shipped with the last revisions of the CRT iMac.
You can see what type of card you have in the System Profiler.

Ok, there is a stupid feature of the current OS (I'm using 10.2.3) that I really hope has either been fixed in Panther or maybe in an update I have not yet installed (driver issues with clunky old scsi gear) or is just somehow due to my setup.
I am in a finder window in list view. I create a new folder. It highlights the folder but DOESN'T automatically allow me to start typing in a name for the folder, like it does in Icon view.
Tell me this is fixed.
And if I have just been making some simple error, there will be 50 brownie points awarded for the best flame!

It works that way whenever you create a new folder it doesn't matter the view. No problem though. If you want to change the name while the icon is still selected hit the enter key and then you can type the new name.

Thanks for that work around Mac Bandit, but I do find that it automatically goes into name typing mode in Icon view and Column View, but doesn't in List view, which is the view I use most. Could it be something in my prefs? Or is it the 10.2.3 thing?
The other little "feature" that is odd and certainly different from OS9 as far as I remember, is that if I have a folder open and selected in a list view say 3 levels deep, I create a new folder, it lands at the top level, not inside the selected folder.
In OS 9 it would land inside the nested folder as I remember, which is where you would want it. In column view this works correctly.

Ah, you are correct on it working the way it SHOULD in icon view. For some reason I don't remember it working that way. Oh, well.
Yes, in list view the folder doesn't go where it should. I think the simple fact that creating a folder in icon view gives you a different result then in column view shows that the system is still immature and hasn't had all parts of it standardized yet. I look at these as niggling little problems that will go away in the near future.

In a word: No. It hasn't been fixed. I've felt the pain of this "bug" too. Perhaps you should report it to Apple using bug reporter and see what comes of it (you'll have to be an ADC members, but free members get access to this functionality too).

So you are saying its still not fixed in Panther?
If thats the case I think I will have a little whinge at Apple before its too late (like they will listen to me - MVC Saves the Apple universe with timely bug report - Bill Gates resigns in shock )
They used to be hot for usabilty, these days it sometimes seems its all skindeep. But hey, OSX's bones are right, and you couldn't say that about OS9.

That's what I'm saying. To be fair though, I can well imagine that if QA doesn't use any other view except icon view (the default) they might well miss it. On the other hand, perhaps there is a reason why it doesn't work this way. Like how Finder only seems to have one thread when opening folders on a network disk :-(

1503.93 -
863 =
640.9300000000001 ?
It should be 640.93 on anything else...

http://www.macosxrumors.com/
MacOSXRumors has a brief article about 7B28, but doesn't really ay anything we don't already know, however, what's interesting are the screen shots they posted for 7B21, which contained some features I hadn't heard reported before.
Date and Time - Time announcement (http://alexandros.roussos.free.fr/macosxrumors/images/030807/datetime_pane.jpg)
This is a wonderful added functionality that I've been waiting for for some time. I wish now that they would put in an alarm clock.
Exchange support on Mail (http://alexandros.roussos.free.fr/macosxrumors/images/030807/mail_exchange.jpg)
We've all heard about this one. Still nice to see it.
Exchange support on Address Book (http://alexandros.roussos.free.fr/macosxrumors/images/030807/addressbook_exchange.jpg)
No surprises there.
Image Capture sharing (http://alexandros.roussos.free.fr/macosxrumors/images/030807/imagecapture_share.jpg)
Now this is nice. Look for shared devices, Share my devices, Web Sharing with authentication.
Network 6 to 4 (http://alexandros.roussos.free.fr/macosxrumors/images/030807/network_6to4.jpg)
Now this rocks! 6 to 4 is a translation protocol that allows you to connect to an IPv6to4 compatible device, and enables Mac OS X to understand IP6to4 packets, which translates the IPv4 client and resolves it on a larger IPv6 network. The IPv6 network sees the IPv4 client as an IPv6 client through the IPv6to4 router.
Sweet!
Also, it shows in Network a connection over Firewire! Woohoo!
Can you say IPoF and PPPoF? Can you say *fast* networking between two computers? Not a standard yet, but it's cool. (Sure it could be done by unsupported means, but being supported is way cool.)
TextEdit kern editing (http://alexandros.roussos.free.fr/macosxrumors/images/030807/textedit_kern.jpg)
TextEdit supports Kernning? Great! What is Kernning? It controls the spacing of your text. So if you're getting spacing related to spacing, you no longer have to fudge with a kern editor, TextEdit has it built in!
I'm so drooling here.

Can you say IPoF and PPPoF? Can you say *fast* networking between two computers? Not a standard yet, but it's cool. (Sure it could be done by unsupported means, but being supported is way cool.).....................
Thanks for the information it's nice to see some of the unannounced features. Though I don't see any advantage for firewire networking since gigabit ethernet is still faster.

Not all Macs have Gigabit ethernet, e.g. 12" PowerBook.

Yeah, not only do not all Macs have Gigabit Ethernet (like the iBook, the 12" PowerBook which is essentially a glorified iBook that Marketing had its way with, and the eMac), but Cat 6 cables are Expensive, as are Cat 6 compatible switches.
Firewire is far cheaper.

I haven't experienced any problems with the movement of my mouse when using Expose.
I did notice that the calculator has a different look this time around.

If you listen to Talisman which the sample above isn't enough to hear you could see where I could get it wrong. I think that even Surfers could have sampled it maybe.
Thanks for setting it strait. Funny cause I have that K&D CD but have not listened to it in years.. :)
At least we have good taste in music :)

I have had odd mouse problems in the past including sticky mousing with 3rd party mice. The only cure I have found is repairing Disk Permissions. Sometimes unplugging the mouse and plugging it back it will work but it never really fixes it.

Actually Gigabit Ethernet will work fine with Cat-5e. You can get it for $26 for 100ft or 1000ft for $100. Last I checked that's a lot cheaper then firewire cables. Also 1394a is limited to just under 15 feet for a maximum length.
I was unaware that Apple was shipping models with out gigabit. For some reason I thought it was a standard across the board. I can see the benefit of firewire for those models.

I'm not that crazy about the new Massive Attack. I like the prior album better.
Personally I would like some Yello or William Orbit :)
Or some of that Nu Jazz coming out of Germany would be cool also.

Or some of that Nu Jazz coming out of Germany would be cool also. My first thought was: The old sounds, insignificant melodies. But the more frequently I heard it (MA), particularly in the car, the better it became.
And Yello are cool, I knew however not they are doing some new stuff.
Got some tips what to here from Nu Jazz?
