View Full Version : How To: Install Apps without hacking

Follow these instructions to install installer.app and start enjoying all of the wonderful native apps!

1. Go here http://iphone.nullriver.com/beta/ and download the AppTapp Installer

2. Go to iTunes, uncheck the "sync when iPhone is connected" button and completely close iTunes.

3. Open the .dmg, hit the continue button and let it do its magic! While installing installer.app it forces your phone into recovery mode and the screen with "please connect to itunes" will appear. THIS IS NORMAL, do not open and connect to iTunes yet!!!!, restart your phone and you will now have a new app on your phone.

4. You can now go back into iTunes and recheck the "sync when iPhone is connected" button.

Now you will be able to install applications from the Installer. This is extremely simple. Just open the Installer application and select the software you want to install.

Installing Applications

When you start Installer you will see only a handful of applications. To access all third party software available, do the following:

- Launch installer on your iPhone. It will connect to the internet and register the available packages.

- Click on Community Resources package inside the Install tab.

- You will see the detail. Click the Install button.

- After installing, you will see the third party apps currently available for iPhone.

- Click on any of them, hit the install button and enjoy.

*Note* After installing the Installer.app, simply install the update, and then install the Mobile Finder.app. so that you can access all of your apps after the home screen is filled. I also suggest SummerBoard, as it is a very nice app that allows your springboard to scroll to view all your apps.

*Note* If wanting to install the NES Emulator and get additional games, you must first install OpenSSH and BSD Subsystem. *Thanks to The General for the following info

- If you have Installer.app installed, run it and install "Community Resources"

- Then once you have that installed, more programs will show up that you can install. Scroll down to OpenSSH and install that. Then install BSD Subsystem.

- Restart your phone and connect it to a WiFi router. Go to Settings -> Wifi -> And hit the little blue "(>)" next to the network you're connected to. Write down your IP address listed there.

- Download Cyberduck (http://cyberduck.ch/) if you're on a Mac, or Filezilla if you're on Windows.

- In Cyberduck, hit "Open Connection" and select the "SFTP" protocol. Type your IP address into the address bar, then for the user name and password it's most likely root and dottie, respectively. Port should say 22. Hit connect.

- If all goes well, you should be browsing your iPhone's files in no time. Just go to /var/root/Media and create a directory called ROMs, and one inside that called NES. Put your ROMs in that NES folder.

For instance...

/var/root/Media/ROMs/NES/Super\ Mario\ 3.nes

Extremly smooth and easy.

It's really pretty much just as much of a hack, except it's automated, so you won't screw it up, ne?

Isn't this still pretty much a hack?

The difference is that its soooo easy. Try it for yourself, its very straight forward using these steps.

It was detailed out so it looks complicated but really is not.

how many apps are supported by the installer?

I was going to check out the apper program (that makes web pages into apps that you can put on the homescreen); is that supported? For that matter has anyone tried it? Does it just redirect to Safari or does it work like the other native apps? I should probably give this its own topic.

I don't doubt it's easy. But it's still a hack. Which I won't do to my iPhone. I didn't even mind the "complicated" instructions that were out there when they first got going. I'll do it once it's actually not a hack. Which may very well be never.

with all of these hacks, you can use the restore features in iTunes to bring your phone back to normal no matter what you do to it. A quick resync and you'd be back to normal. Seems pretty safe to mess with from what I can see.

Please! OP! Add that it is critical that you install 'Launcher' once you have access to the Installer.app on your phone. If you don't, you will eventually lose the Installer icon from the home screen. In order to fix this, you'll need to restore and start over. After installing the Installer.app, simply install the update, and then install the Launcher app. Then when the home screen is filled, you can access any other apps you have installed through the Launcher.

Well I guess it just took me posting my previous message.

Shortly after I posted I tried again and it ran fine (no changes whatsoever)...

I've installed without a hitch, now just loading things up.

FYI, for some reason my errors seemed to be based off of an incomplete download from Apple. It resumed when I tried again and all steps went smoothly from there...

I've done this and got the NES app on my phone...but I can't figure out how to get the ROMs on there.

I installed both the NES app and the SSH app from the Installer app thingy. Then I tried to follow the directions here (http://www.mercurious.com/wordpress/2007/08/12/iphone-mod-guide-for-beginners-and-faq/#nes-roms), but when I type in my iPhone's IP (after Jailbreaking using iFuntastic), it just says: "ssh: root: No address associated with nodename"

What am I doing wrong? Does anyone have any easier instructions? Thanks.

In order to fix this, you'll need to restore and start over..

Or just edit your /System/Library/CoreServices/Springboard.app/Displayorder.plist

Hacking is so not-a-big-deal it's not even funny. I use the Installer.app so that I don't have to manually update my apps when new versions come out. It's a very nice package management system. The repository has almost all the apps out there, minus the really crappy ones. :D

^^ what he said, this is an amazing application but whats a nes app without any games to play? also where is the voice recorder?

Installer.app can install OpenSSH and the BSD Subsystem, which installs SFTP ... so you can access the files on the phone through an SFTP client like Cyberduck. The voice recorder is now in the repository, I just installed it.

General, you say Installer.app "can" install SSH. Do you mean it actually "does", or that there is some optional step involved? I don't see a mention of it in the OP notes, and obviously it would be great if it did it all at once.

Ideally, I want to run installer.app and get SSH/SFTP in one step.

Thanks for the clarification.

Thanks for the clarification.

You have to run Installer.app on your iPhone, and under the "install" tab, install "Community Sources" and once you do that, there will be a lot more programs there for you to install. OpenSSH and BSD Subsystem are in the System section.

This is actually the best way to install SSH and SFTP right now. The other tutorials and binaries are VERY VERY slow. It takes a good 2 minutes from the time you type ssh root@whatever to get to the part where you can type in your password and connect. With OpenSSH installed by Installer.app, it's virtually instant.

Also, I don't know what happened with this ... but I used to not be able to use WiFi on our router at work. It had trouble resolving DNS, even manually putting it a DNS server didn't fix it. I think the router just hates Macs because I had trouble getting my MacBook Pro to work on it ... well anyway, ever since I installed BSD Subsystem, my iPhone has been able to connect to the internet through this router without a hitch.

Oh yeah, OpenSSH installs an SSH client too. So once you install that, you'll be able to SSH out of your iPhone using MobileTerm-VT100, or just MobileTerminal, but I think it needs VT100 emulation ... doesn't matter, both versions of Terminal are in the repository.

excellent info General, thanks a bunch for that.

One more question. Is it true that if you use installer.app, you are jailbreaking the iPhone, and therefore CANNOT sync to iTunes anymore? I seem to recall seeing that somewhere (maybe it was in the iFuntastic app).

If you lose the ability to sync, can you do something to get that back, without losing your hacks?

Thanks again!

The only way you should jailbreak right now is this method:

http://iphone.fiveforty.net/wiki/index.php/How_to_Escape_Jail

Otherwise it may cause problems with syncing to iTunes. I can sync with iTunes just fine. It looks like the above script jailbreaks using this method, then most likely returns to jail.

You will be okay, don't worry about it.

I've tried it through EDGE and it's painfully slow and more complicated. Just go to Starbucks with your laptop or another place with a WiFi router.

EDIT: Actually, if your laptop has WiFi, you can do it without a router. I'll have to go home and test this first, I'll post instructions later tonight.

Wow, I just typed a huge long reply ... then I hit submit and it gave me some error message. I hit back and what I'd typed was gone. :(

EDIT: Okay fine, I'll type it again ... hold on.

Here it is:

Most likely your network settings. I couldn't tell you exactly what caused that, since I am not sitting at your computer. :) Anyway, glad to see you got it working.

Just a small update, I looked at Installer.app today and there's a new program on it called SendSong. It lists all the songs in your iTunes library (the one on your phone, not on your computer) and you can tap one and a menu pops up with some exciting features. Here's a screenshot:

http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z201/paloooz/foo_0.png

Should make it easier for people who are scared of the terminal to put ringtones on their iPhone without having to use that terrible software that is iFuntastic. :)

Another thing. Someone was wondering how to connect to their iPhone via SFTP without a Wifi router. No problem. Click on the Wifi icon on the menu bar, go to Create Network... and choose a name. Then connect to that network with your iPhone, and follow the rest of my instructions that are now in the original post. Starting from "tap the little (>) button" or whatever it was I said.

Very simple. :)

I will be posting instructions on how to tether easily later today. Turns out BSD Subsystem installs everything you need to do that too! :D I wish they would add the screenshot binary to BSD Subsystem.

It's a side effect of adding new apps to the springboard, they are added in order until the screen fills. You can manually edit the plist file to rearrange the order, and I'm pretty sure there is a frontend (check modmyiphone) in use that will allow you to change the order I just haven't used it so I don't know what its called.

There is a little app that has a work around in Installerapp it's called SBkb, and it moves the Safari button up and into the 4th row in the first column and then you have Installer, Launcher and <first app you install> and everything else goes into the launcher.

I didn't like having only three on the bottom so I deleted it. It also lets you turn off auto-correction in general.

Is there a way to get the Launcher icon to replace the YouTube icon and have all other apps no show up on the main screen besides the stock ones?

EDIT: I guess I would need to Installer to replace Weather as well since Installer does show up in the launcher menu...

Does that make any sense?

I don't know how to make icons not show up. You'd have to delete the applications. So you'd have no YouTube.app, no Weather, and Launcher.app and Installer.app which would be pretty pointless.

Any app you install with installer.app other than launcher will show up at the bottom. I dont think there's a way to hide them ... hold on lemme check something. Fieldtest.app is hidden, so there must be a way.

Yeah, there's a way to do it. It's kind of complicated though ...

In DisplayOrder.plist, there are three sections. buttonBar, iconList and special. In order to hide the applications, you'll need to put each application you want to hide in the special section. If you install all the applications you want and tell me which ones you've installed I can send you a DisplayOrder.plist that will do exactly what you want. Without having to delete YouTube.app or Weather.app. :)

All you'll have to do is stick it in /System/Library/CoreServices/Springboard.app

Thanks my man, I really appreciate this!

I have al the standard apps and Installer, Launcher, Lights Off, and VNotes.

I would love for row one to be normal, row two (replace YouTube with Installer and Weather with Launcher), row three normal, row for blank like normal, and the dock normal.

If you could have Lights off, VNotes, Weather, and YouTube show up in Launcher that would be perfect! Let me know if thats possible and let me know if you would like anything in return. Thanks again!!!

If I were you, I'd use Finder.app instead of Launcher.app.

Finder lists all programs in /Applications ... Launcher seems to pick and choose. If you want to, I'll update your DisplayOrder.plist to show Finder instead of Launcher.

As background, I've installed several apps, right now both my NES and LightsOut show up on the bottom row (with Installer and Launcher). The last row in the <key>iconList</key> is:

<dict>
<key>displayIdentifier</key>
<string>com.nullriver.iphone.Installer</string>
</dict>
<dict>
<key>displayIdentifier</key>
<string>com.nullriver.iphone.Launcher</string>
</dict>

So none of the apps that I've installed other than installer and launcher show up, which is why I was asking about the <string> to add to put them in the special key.

Do you know how launcher decides what it displays? I was wondering if there was a plist file for that one...

2. Install OpenSSH and BSD Subsystem with Installer.app if you haven't already done so. Restart your iPhone.

4. chmod +x /bin/screenshot

Maybe you got your external IP address ... you need your internal IP address. To find your internal IP address, go to Settings -> Wifi on your iPhone and press the little blue "(>)" button. Your internal IP will be listed there. Use that one. If you go to a site like http://www.ip-adress.com/ and get that, it won't work that way. But yeah, your internal IP address doesn't need to be removed.

I used Cyberduck and Filezilla (I have bother a PC and Mac.) I connected to my wireless (Which has a password) used the IP Address on my phone and name:root and Password:dottie. I tried using my networks password as well but no dice.

Just trying to get the NES games transfered onto my iPhone.

It just looks like the middle one is bigger, the areas are all the same size. The icons are just angled and it makes it look different. Everything works perfect to touch.

Ok I wasn't able to get it up and running with the SSH thing so I ran through some other programs and now here is how to get the ROMs on your iphone without the SSH or connecting to thie internet.

You'll need a PC for this so all you mac users take the books off your old towers dust em off get some plugs for it hook it up and get ready!
(Or go to a friends home)

1. Get iphoneinterface.exe (it's the original program we used with the jailbreak)

2. run cmd (i.e. your Command Dos)
make the directory for your roms
*type help for the comand for make directory I think it's "mkdir"

/var/root/Media/ROMs/

then

/var/root/Media/ROMs/NES/

3. Once you made the directories use iphonebrowser

4. Navagate to your NES folder and drop in your NES roms, it may take a few min. for all the nes roms to get copied over.

I tried all this and still couldnt get the ssh connection, probably due to the network Im on.

Searched around online for a bit and found a program called iNdependence.

Since all the other 3rd party apps were installed, when I ran this prog, it said the phone was "jailbreaked" and it allowed me to transfer ringtones flawlessly. Perfect workaround until I can get the ssh working. Ringtones show up as long as they are .m4a!

The IP address I have on my phone is correct but the hotel Im currently at has a wireless network and for some reason it just wont let me use ssh correctly...darn! Anyone have any thoughts or ideas? Do I need to call the system admin? HAHA!

So now the instructions on taking screenshots is:

1. Install Erica Utilities, OpenSSH, and BSD Subsystem with Installer.app

2. Log into your phone via SSH, cd to the directory you want to save the screenshot.

3. Get to the screen you want to snap on your iPhone.

4. Issue this command via SSH:

snap namex

The screenshot will be saved in your present working directory as namex.png

In your /System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/English.???/LocalizedApplicationNames.strngs, you'll see some entries and it's fairly obvious what they mean. Basically, when you see some code like this:

<key>com.apple.mobilephone</key>
<string>iPhone</string>
<key>com.apple.youtube</key>
<string>YouTube</string>

Just put a space in instead of the name. So it would end up looking like this:

<key>com.apple.mobilephone</key>
<string> </string>
<key>com.apple.youtube</key>
<string> </string>

Then, the names will not show up. :)

However, leaving a space didn't work for me...that still left a blank (black) text box. Perhaps this was because I was adding demo apps that were not originals. At any rate, I tried just removing the space, and voila...success!

I think i might be having some issues with my wifi though, my eifu seems to be really slow, hardly ever load pages and seems to get hung up on a page a lot and never load. Anyone know what could be wrong?

I hardly ever post for help but here goes....
if a stooge like me can put NES on, change icons and etc, then anyone can do it. my only hangup is the diplay order stuff. since i no NOTHING of terminal and all, i am lost as to how to remove some icons, place some in the launcher and arrange the bottom. i only want 12 icons anyway on the top. i used some of that digitalkid's icons, WOW, they look good, i would love to get my beloved New Orleans Saints logo at the bottom like the kings one i saw on here. is there a display list tutorial somewhere? if not, i still want to say thanks for all the hard work, this is a lot of fun learning from scratch all this, and you guys make it easy for a computer illiterate like me. mad props to The General and Deuce Deuce, who are the bomb yo...LOL

They go in /var/root/Media/ROMs/NES/ and yes they are the same as ROMs you'd play on the computer. :)

Does using installer.app still "jailbreak" the phone?

AFter you jailbreak, can you un-jailbreak without having to restore the phone?

Does this mean you have to restore the phone prior to all apple firmware upgrades?

:)

It jailbreaks the phone. Steps to install firmware update:

1. Sync with iTunes.
2. Restore.
3. Apply hacks again.

All text messages and contacts and such will be saved, the only thing you'll lose is the hacks.

assuming you have downloaded the firmware upgrade already, when you restore it will apply it to the phone in the restore. I don't have an iphone atm but i just assume thats how it will work based on my experience with apple products

I don't doubt it's easy. But it's still a hack. Which I won't do to my iPhone. I didn't even mind the "complicated" instructions that were out there when they first got going. I'll do it once it's actually not a hack. Which may very well be never.

then you will not have fun with your iphone..

I've been really intrigued by native iPhone applications for awhile now, but haven't tried any due to fear of bricking my precious iPhone. Is this something I really need to be concerned with at this stage of the game? Have developers become adept enough at building stable, reasonably risk-free applications? I haven't heard any horror stories, but I'm still nervous.

I personally have never heard a report of anyone bricking their iPhone due to an application. The most I have ever had to do if an app freezes or something, is hold down the home+power and wait for the connect to itunes message, and then restore the phone and start my mods over

but that has only happened to me once because i forgot to restart my phone after i installed an alpha lvl app. But yes, I have restored after both the iTunes update, and iPhone 1.02 update, started from scratch, just like I had never done anything each time and modded to my likeing, there is really no risk.

The only risk I have heard of is using the wrong version of AppTapp installer if you have v7.4 of iTunes, or using iFuntastic. But if you use the correct AppTapp installer which is clearly labeled you will have no problem and not believe how simple it is and easy. The application does everything for you.

You will be downloading apps within 5 mins guarnteed. Follow my instructions in the original post and you will be perfectly fine.

You can uninstall apps by going into the Install.app program and then clicking the uninstall tab. Springboard is the default "launcher" for your iPhone. It's what comes with the iPhone, and you have to use it. Summerboard is an extension of that and lets you scroll through your apps, as well as change themes and certain options. I think you might've gotten the two confused. Summerboard is awesome, download it through Install.app.

Whoa...ok. Looks like some questions need to be cleared up.

First off, BSD subsystem is essential to many applications available to download, and if you ever want to SSH onto your phone you need this. Why wouldnt you want it?

Springboard is like the "desktop" for you iPhone, it is just the name of the homescreen as designated by the files found on the iPhone.

Summerboard, is an app which modifies your springboard to enable it to scroll/add wallpaper etc...

To uninstall apps, go back into installer.app. There is a tab across the top which says uninstall....pretty straight forward, Im not sure why it only says reinstall for BSD subsystem, maybe because one of your other apps uses it and it is needed for them to function.

The easiest way to rearrange icons is to use the rSBT app. Simply move the apps up or down on the list to position them.

A list for native apps can be found here:

1. Put this file (http://www.gofilego.com/?fileid=c803ed447075b26f36adf2e73d5e49949082e1f4) in /bin
2. Install OpenSSH and BSD Subsystem with Installer.app if you haven't already done so. Restart your iPhone.
3. Open the terminal on your Mac and do ssh root@10.0.1.189 but obviously put your iPhone's IP address ... it may take a few seconds and you might have to type "yes" before you can type the password which is "dottie" ... once you're logged in...
4. chmod +x /bin/screenshot
5. Then get to the screen you want to take a screenshot of on your iPhone, and just type screenshot and hit enter. It will tell you and save your screenshot in /tmp/foo_0.png

Let me know if you need help with that.

Uhh, I definitely need a bit of help, General!

I followed the above instructions to the letter, including putting
the Screenshot file in the /bin folder, and restarting the iPhone.
I am able to log in via Terminal, and navigate to the Screenshot file,
but when I try to take the screenshot, I get the following error:

http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/1871/picture8en3.png

I have tried several times, but no screenshot gets placed in the /tmp folder.

Any idea what the problem is?

Okay so I have gotten majorly conflicting information regarding installer.app and apples warranty. Okay, so we all know that apple wasn't intending for 3rd party apps to be developed for the iPhone (at least not yet, anyway). So the question is: does installing this stuff have any effect on apples warranty? Can I bring my phone to my apple store to have it serviced with an NES emulator and appolo chat client installed? My carrier is AT&T so I'm not interested in hacking for another carrier. Just games, graphics packages, stuff to customize my home page, icons, etc.

Anyone have any real insight on this? Tonight i called an apple store and the guy said he didn't know and suggested calling the iPhone support line (at which point they had closed for the night).

Anyway, thanks, guys.

Of course it's against the warranty. If you ever have to bring it in for service, do a restore before you do so.

Reinstalling installer.app and your old applications won't take that long.

I've read somewhere (not sure if it was at this site or not) that a guy who took his in this way was refused service, and even added to a blacklist so he couldn't get service at any store on that phone... He eventually got it worked out with the manager there, but his words of advice were "Do a restore on your phone before you take it to a Genius Bar".

If they ask about it being "blank", tell them the last thing you tried was a restore and your problem still exists.

This is third hand quoting here. No direct experience on that front, but it wouldn't surprise me. Similar to "don't take your laptop in for service chocked full of bootlegged programs". Granted this is not bootlegged software they'll see, but it just makes sense.

yes. While the installer is installing it forces your iPhone into recovery mode. This is normal. Let it go and it will restart itself. Do not connect to iTunes.

Is there any way you could help me out. I'm having a brutle time trying to figure this out.

Last week i purchased an iphone that was fw 1.1.1

I was able to unlock/ activate it using the latest version of iphone sim free. (the free one seemed to crazy for me to use i chickend out)

It downgraded my phone to 1.0.2.

I can't remember where i read but it said app tap 3 or 3.1 can now be used.

I downloaded it... it seemed to install on my phone cause i have a blue icon there with white swirls in it.

When i tap it, it says:

"Welcome to installer 3!

This version of installer has been greatly improved on a number of fronts; including the user interface and the packaging back-end.

This release uses a diffrent core repository and firmware 1.1.1 is recomended."

Now when i downloaded it, it asked me to select the version of my iphone, i selected 1.0.2.

Why is it informing me that "This release uses a diffrent core repository and firmware 1.1.1 is recomended. when it gave me the option to choose?

??
What steps should i proceed with that are optiional at the bottom: 'Featured, Install, update, uninstall or sources' ???

ok...

1) - you connect via WiFi. there is no other way to see your files on your iphone via winSCP unless you have a IP address on the same subnet as your home system.. local network.. 10.0.1.x or 192.168.x.x etc..

2) - you can see your files, root, etc using "MobileFinder"

just check the ".." setting in the prefs and you can go UpLevel on your directories inside mobile finder and access root, var, sbin, whatever

3) - to REARRANGE the order of your files, you need 1 of 2 apps available in the installer.app

they are

XLAUNCH - xlaunch has a "reorder apps" feature and also has a SQUEEZE and FIT dock option where you can add a 5th or 6th ICON to your mini DOCK on your iPHONE, you can also REMOVE icons from your DOCK so if you want 4 icons and 1 is phone, SMS, ebooks, and Installer you can put those 4 on your DOCK and get rid of the ipod icon, etc, etc,etc

CUSTOMIZE - also has a REORDER option which lets you both
a) reorder files by dragging and dropping into a ordered list
b) has a "eye" icon next to each program name which lets you "HIDE AND SHOW" the apps..

4) - FIELD TEST ICON / this is a program that is default loaded into your phone and is "hidden" basically you can do 2 things.... 1 ) you can re-hide the app by clicking on it in customize or in XLAUNCH and selecting it and making it "hidden/visible"

5) - there is a way to "email" yourself the files on your iphone using mobilefinder but if you don't have WiFi its going to be slow over EDGE, and it is by no means the proper way to backup or modify your phone... just a suggestion if you want to backup say.. "voicemail" or "SMS messages"

I need to figure this out also...

anybody know if these instructions would work with a 1.1.2 phone?

so I got it to work by downgrading the firmware to 1.1.1 and installing appsnapp from jailbreakme.com then letting iTunes bring it back up to 1.1.2. You can downgrade the firmware using an app called iNdependence. Enjoy!

Do the following steps:

1.) Download AppTapp Installer v3.1 from http://iphone.nullriver.com/beta/ to your desktop.
2.) While holding the "Control" key, click on AppTapp Installer and select "Show Package Contents"
3.) Open "Contents/Resources" folder
4.) Drag the application "Installer" onto your desktop
5.) Use iNdependence v1.3.1 to upload the "Installer" application onto your iPhone. If you don't have iNdependence, you can download it at http://code.google.com/p/independence/
6.) Reboot your iPhone and the Installer icon should appear on the springboard

When attempting to install SummerBoard V3.0 from Installer on an upgraded iPhone v1.1.2, I get the following Error Message:

"Firmware 1.1.1 or later is required for this version of Summerboard"

Have other's encountered this problem and if so, is there a fix?

when you say the "it still has the wheel spinning stating that it's waiting to connect...", could you please tell me what version of iNdependence you are using (it should be 1.3.1). If so, please details the steps you took before getting to this message.

Also, I assume you inputted your iPhone's WiFi IP address and entered the password (try both dottie or alpine, alpine worked for me).

Additionally, try quitting iNdependence, make sure iTunes is quit and go into Activity monitor and force quit iTunes Helper. Then try iNdependence again.

there should be a newer version of summerboard. Did you try both versions?

I checked again and Installer lists two SummerBoard apps, v3.0 and v2.11. Are you suggesting I try the earlier version 2.11 for an upgraded iPhone 1.1.2?

Does this iphone application work In AU because we can't add anything to the iPhone... if we press the update button in iTunes the whole phone is basically useless & it will never work again !!

Excuse my ignorance, but I have a couple questions about hacking...

Everything that can be done using this method can be completely cleared. Basically, fresh out of the box?

Are there any drawbacks or side problems that can occur from doing this?

Will it effect my apple care?

Does using this method void the warrenty?

I really want to do this, but I just want to be sure I don't screw up my phone. I can't afford another one.:p

I can't get this to work :(

It won't download on my iPhone...I tried to follow the instructions you set out ...but I don't see anywhere on that URL where I can actually download it for newer firmware. It told me to go to jailbreakme.com ON my iPhone...so I did, and when clicking the download link, it takes me to jailbreakme.com/files/y.tiff and does nothing from there. I'm connecting via my wireless internet, I'm on 02 in the UK annnnd my version is 1.1.3.

Help pretty please? I am COMPLETE noob to anything Apple! When I bought my iPhone, it was the first time I'd ever even installed iTunes...so you get the idea!

Thanks in advance! x

Apples official policy says that they will not service phones that have had their software modified thru unofficial means.

Which means hacking. If you know what you're doing, you can cover your tracks when complaining to Apple about your iPhone.

how to install installer 1.1.4

THIS METHOD IS OUT OF DATE.

IT WILL NOT WORK ON ANY NEW IPHONES!

To add Installer and 3rd party applications I suggest you use PWNAGE or if that is too complicated iLiberty+

FAQ: This method ONLY worked on iPhones with the 1.0.2 firmware released in July 2007. It was rendered useless by firmware 1.1.1 released in September 2007.

Why do you need to log in with SSH? Just use one of the jailbreaking methods!

But for the lastest phones the password is alpine

Just wondering if the link you mentioned to install installer.app for iphone is compatible for iphone version 1.1.4? If not then how do i get installer.app?
I read in another post that when you unlock/jailbbreak using ziphone 3.0, installer.app should already be in your phone. This isn't so in my case. please help.

well the easiest way i know is that u google ziphones blog, download ziphone (either mac or pc) and you connect the iphone/itouch and hit jailbreak. thats all, and its made specifically for ppl who want to jailbreak 1.1.4 its soo easy. i cant believe i didnt do this earlier. also the blog thing is a webapp. so dont worry about that, when u see something "extra".
