i got my 24" imac today after 2 weeks of waiting (feels like a lot more). it has a scratch on the glass, not major or anything, and it's on the black area so not on the screen area. this scratch is not big enough or annoying enough for me to want to return the imac.

what can i do about it though, i got a not perfect imac and i would like to get compensated. what is reasonable to ask for when i call apple?

Personally, I don't think you should ask for anything. If you can live with it you can also live without attempting to get something for nothing.

I would ask them to replace the computer.

Thank goodness there is someone here with a bit of honesty. If it was your fault it got scratched, then you should not expect Apple to have to sort it out for you.

Ditto. Do it now, before you start using the computer a lot, and would really miss it if said minor annoyance became a major one.

it was scratched when i picked it up from the box. it was not my fault. i have never handled a computer as careful as i did this imac.

what i'm saying is that waiting another month for a replacement is not worth it, since i need the computer now.

that's not saying it's not worth anything.

I agree with other posters; you should either send it back or keep it and not ask for anything. Apple would be willing to replace it for you or fix it, but if you just called and told them it was scratched hoping to get something for your pain and suffering, I expect they would tell you to return it so they can fix it.

if it's a quick fix at the local apple vendor, i would certainly do it.

i just can't be without the computer for more than a few days.

Do some experimenting? Everyone's complaining about the glossy screen, so try an experiment since the glass has a scratch.

Get a glass cutting place to do you a equivalent sized piece of anti-glare glass and report to us how it works. Is the screen too blurry?

On a cheaper note, since it is just glass, a glass repair place could polish out the scratch for you.

i might just try that glass repair thingy.

If you didn't scratch it, I would return it.

It will start to bother you one day and you'll be sorry if you keep it.

Cheers.

You said it is not big enough for you to want to return it. So let it be.

Get a replacement. Call Apple and ask them to repair it under warranty, and ask for it to be serviced by a local shop (they plop the glass off and put the new one on). Or just deal with it.

Everybody wants something for nothing.

What a bitter attitude - you're in customer service, right?

all anyone asks for when spending circa £1000 is that their product is in new condition. If it isn't, then either a discount - like refurbished prices, or to be replaced/repaired as good as new.

Don't just bash this guy because he's asked for advice what to do!

I agree. I doubt anyone would be happy seeing a scratch on their brand new computer.

Especially on a Mac where style and finish actually matter. I doubt any of my users even notice the odd scratch or two on the Dell or HP drones we put out there.

Take a very fine brush (like a modeller's brush) and a bottle of Future floor wax (yes, Future floor wax), dip the brush into the future, and touch up (fill) the scratch. It will make the scratch disappear when dry. If possible, lay your iMac down (screen up) for this fix to prevent the Future from running too much. Trust me.
Future floor wax is actually nearly pure, clear liquid plastic. No other type of floor wax will work.

I don't think his attitude was bitter at all. He was ust responding to the OP's thought that he could live with the defect because he didn't want to send it back but he thought he should call apple to get something for his trouble. If he is not willing to send it back to Apple or take it too an Apple store, why should Apple give him something for it? Apple stands behind their products and will gladly repair the flaw.

i decided to keep the imac, and not ask for anything from apple.

after 2 days i have barely noticed the scratch, it's small as a 1cm hair and is only visible when a light source reflects directly in the scratched area.

i love my imac :)

:word: How much did you pay for this computer again? You should expect nothing but perfection.

Return it. My iMac arrived with something trapped between the glass and the screen (covering 4-5 pixels) and I returned it. I'm not getting another anyway as the gloss screen was too glossy for me. But definitely return it and ask for a perfect one!

I'd get it replaced - mainly because the scratch constitutes a loss of value if you're ever going to re-sell it.
