I've been an OS X user for about a year now, and i have a buddy that started using it recently.

He asked me today why OS X opens a new window for every folder you click on that is within a folder.

I tried both my macs, and neither of them do that. on mine, when you click on a folder, it opens a window, and then click a folder within that first folder, it opens it in the same window. the way it should be.

He had to have changed something, but i cant for the life of me figure out what it is.

please help!

He probably clicked the elongated clear button in the upper right of a window. Otherwise its in the Finder preferences (I think).
