Nope. I think I want one, but I just don't use my cellphone very much. The rest of the features would be cool to have, for even with a 4GB refurb and the extra data plan, that'd $700 for the next year. I have a hard time justifying that.

Yes I own one. I am a person that absolutely hates a cell phone. I really didn't want to get an iPhone or any cell phone for that matter. But because of my business I had to have one so I tried a Blackberry and a Treo before I got the iPhone. Well, for the first time in almost 10 years I look forward to using a cell phone. I absolutely love using it.
I do wish that you could text more than one person at a time. And I also wish that the Bluetooth would actually work with my Macbook Pro. (It's a shame for an Apple branded phone to not work as well as a Sony Ericson via Bluetooth. It really ought to embarrass Apple.)
I also wish that you could download music via iTunes. C'Mon, what were they thinking?
Another thing, why in the world would they not allow it to be used as a wireless modem for your laptop?
Other than that it is absolutely stunning!

I'm in the same boat. But the phone itself is still too expensive for me. Perhaps when the iPhone 2 is released, I can buy the older one at a lower price.

i think both the things that bbyrdhouse said would make this almost a perfect product. The ability to text multiple people would make my life easier. Plus if they could integrate the calender, bookmark and address book sync into isync that would be awesome.

Yes, I own one and I can't go back to my old phone after using it as the iPhone is the best phone I've ever used. I don't think I'll be buying a non-Apple phone any time soon.

That's also another factor for me too. Probably better off with the next gen iPhone when its cheaper and all the bugs are fixed.

I was going to get one, but wanted to wait until my current contract was up. Then work said they were getting me a BlackBerry. I don't really want one, but what are you going to do. They still haven't though, so if an iPhone rev2 comes out anytime soon and fixes some of it's shortcomings, screw the BB. If I can check my e-mail with it, which I should because the company uses webmail, so duh, it should be fine.
I still have a working ROKR though, and it only sucks a little, but the battery life is good (sometimes) when it's not randomly freezing or shutting itself off.

Too expensive. I do like it though and would like to own one some day. If the price goes down in a few years I will definitely be buying it, especially since I can easily fit my whole iTunes library on the 8GB model, and I prefer flash storage anyway.

Funnily enough, I had absolutely no interest in it at all from when it was just a rumor to MWSF. No interest at all. Until Saturday June 30th when I actually played around with one in an Apple store. :o
Just activated it earlier this month. It's very much so overkill for my needs and uses, but I really do enjoy it a great deal.

For the price they're asking, it will need to get the following to get my $$$:
Replacable battery
3G
Stereo Bluetooth (I've read that the current hardware could do this - software update might enable it)
Bluetooh teathering capability (again, software should be able to do this)
Podcast downloading/RSS feed attachments without a PC/Mac (again, software should be able to do this)
Replaceable battery (worth saying twice!)
4+MP camera
Video
Landscape mode keyboard possible in all applications (again, software should be able to do this)

I'm tired of waiting for work to maybe decide whether or not to get me a Blackberry. Last I heard, they want me to have one, but they're waiting for me to just buy one myself. Since all I really need it for is webmail, and we've got wifi all over our offices, I just took the splurge now that I see nothing knew came out at that thing in London on Tuesday. 4GB clearance for $299, minus my $200 credit = $123 iPhone (including tax). I couldn't use my 10% off, but ~$100 works for me! :)

Hmmm, interesting this 'pooling' stuff, what does it really tell you that has any meaning???
~2%, and insignificant number (consider Neilsen ratings which are also not very accurate) of MR members have voted, only ~1,600 of those who voted say they have an iPhone, so much for the Apple faithful/zealots. So much for the thousands of positive posts of opinions about the iPhone on MR threads...except this one, lol.
So, can you say anything about iPhone's 1M users, do even a small percentage own Mac computers??? Halo effect, who would know, who could tell? Certainly not by MR's poll, lol.
Another frivilous poll?

Two in our house and we both love them... bugs and all. Apple gets around to fixing them. And like many people have said, I can't see myself without one now. When the next one comes out, I'll probably sell mine and buy the new one. I'm thoroughly sold on them. In fact, the iPhones were sort of the foot that kicked me over the fence to buying the iMacs. We're an all mac household now, and loving it.

That is my one major complaint with the iPhone, actually that and the poor battery life when using the iPod functions. I eventually went out and bought a shuffle to get me through the day. I generally like everything else about the iPhone, but wish it would get some upgrades such as cut/copy/paste & multiple email selection/deletion.

I just received mine as a present! I asked for it because, over the past few months, my cellphone, PDA, and iPod all died suddenly and unexpectedly. I was already a loyal AT&T customer for other reasons. (On 9/11, only the AT&T network continued to operate, allowing me to find out within minutes that my father -- who worked in the Pentagon and as a commercial airline pilot -- was fine! Thank God.)

Quite simply the best handheld device I have ever owned. If for some reason I no longer have an iPhone in the future, the time will be measured as "time until I get an iPhone again"... but I can't see that happening. Very possible I'd settle for an iPod Touch though if I couldn't abide a new cell plan.

I am a person who hates cell phones but feels a need to own one because looking for a pay-phone late at night or traveling alone without one isn't safe. I used to have a $20 monthly plan with a free phone from T-moble. Never used it. My iphone gets used. I listen to music and podcast, watch movies and sometimes actually use the phone. I search the web for prices while I'm in the store and check my shopping lists in notes. I also purchased on album from the iTunes store, just to see how it works. Yes, it is expensive. Yes, I would buy again @ $400.00 or at least have a Touch 16gb.

I am sure iTunes is the most popular due to "it's very hard work" [note sarcasm]
Actually iTunes is one of the simplest to start and most powerful (good for newbies and experts such as Djs and radio stations) music organization software available.
If you are used to sorting by folder (typically pirated music), then you just have to spend 15 minutes to learn iTunes. It works if you actually put in each CD you own and rip it in iTunes.
It does not work as well if you have ILLEGAL MUSIC (pirated, copied, "shared" or downloaded) with poor or no tags.

While it's certainly true that being able to sit down anywhere (or not even necessarily sit down) and get on the Internet to check something is a fairly cool convenience, it's just that -- a convenience -- and hardly a necessity.

Nope... AT&T is garbage and doesn't offer insurance.
Phone is missing too many features for the price. Features other phones have had for years.
Phone doesn't do phone as modem, but it would suck anyway if run on EDGE.
WiMax is the future and AT&T is going the old 3G route.
Apple should have went with Verizon at first, then Sprint if Verizon refused. Not AT&T.
With cell phones, the network matters about as much as the phone.

I bought one in November and used it for less then a week before giving it away as a gift to my teenage sister (which now adores me after such a gift!).
Sure the phone looks great and its one of the coolest Apple gadgets of all times, but its simply not usefull if you work a lot speaking on your cellphone. Plus its too fragile and can easly risk serious damage if it falls on the floor or you drop it on your desk not so carefully! Not speaking about scratches you can get on the screen by simply sliding it in and out of your pocket!
I must admit I change cell phone at laeast every 6 months as it dies-out for too much use... so not worth spending more then $150-200 for a new one each time! It would be unbelivable to repalce a iPhone so often!
Motorlola's V3 is an old phone but does all i need adn when i wear it out, its not that expensie to replace! And use an iPod Touch along with it for the "fun side"...!
My two cents...

That was another thing as anything and everything was excluded which is not to say if you step on your phone or it gets stolen you're dumb but having the Ins. is just a nice piece of mind.
In the end the phones we purchased were based on the first and foremost idea, a great working phone and what-else does it have or can it do. I think the main answer for us and some others is the fact that for a job there is a computer and internet as is everywhere we would go. No need to have a PDA type phone for just texting and emails but some require more than others.
Anyway, it looks great just not needed here :)

Missed poll. But I do. 1st gen. 8gb. Really happy with it. I hated having to Remeber phone and iPod. And when I did remember it would be uncomfortable with so many things in my pockets. I'd need my keys, wallet, phone, head phones, iPod and gum. Haha. But that's just me. Not worth the 3g cause an extra 10bucks a month for the plan for the Internet for 10 or if you are lucky 20seconds faster Internet. I can deal when I'm bored while it loads and listen to music. I'm on it now at work. Haha.

There sits the problem. If it were on the Sprint network, I'd pay $50 and get a new one. Not with AT&T though. Couple of things... #1.) Even IF Apple were not going solo with AT&T, they'd have to produce a different phone type in order to work on Sprint's network. So, just producing an unlocked GSM phone wouldn't help you out with Sprint. #2.) My girlfriend got fooled into some special offer with Sprint on Christmas, and got locked into a 2 year contract that she loathes. I left Sprint/Nextel for the iPhone, and it wasn't anything to glow about. My AT&T experience, especially the account website has been LIGHTYEARS improved. #3.) I just went to the Sprint website and checked out the rates. Very comparable until you get to their new "Simply Everything" plans (a recent addition that smacks to me of, "don't leave me!") I think AT&T only "loses" with regards to unlimited text messages and TV services. --But, I would NEVER need any of that stuff. My text usage is low traffic, my voice is handled by rollover minutes (I have thousands of rollover minutes since joining last year), and I have YouTube and iTunes for video.

nope don't own one and don't plan on it... It works on the slowest network... Great they made a new 3G iPhone but the GSM 3G network can't touch the speeds of a CDMA EVDO network ie. Sprint.
I love the blackberry. I been a crackberry addict for about 4 years now and can't put it down. But if the iPhone could work on the CDMA network I would be willing to put my blackberry down. It would take a lot for me to get used to the on screen keyboard, and I have heard that it can't get excel files, any one know if this is true?? I get emailed excel files all day long to my blackberry and I have to be able to read them.

just so you know your not using just your roll over mins. you are using your anytime mins. You might never use the roll over mins. If you don't use them with in a year you loose them. So lets say you got the plan in Jan. and never use a roll over min from jan. to jan. say buh bye to them mins... and honestly most people are good with their plans and have the right one I know I never go over my mins... The roll over is just a gimic if you don't use them the next month you prolly are never gonna use them...
sorry kinda off topic... its the salesman in me... lol

Actually, I know perfectly well. Rollover minutes are only a "gimmick" to people that don't pay any attention to their cellular plan. Here's the deal, when I was at Sprint/Nextel, I had "Free Incoming Calls" on my business phone. Over the years, it had become my personal phone (no reimbursements), but I still liked the idea that anyone could call me and we could talk indefinitely without affecting my phone bill. I had 500 anytime minutes. When I got my iPhone, I was a little leery about whether the combination of "free mobile-to-mobile" and "rollover minutes" would counter the "free incoming calls" and allow me not to be charged for going over the limit.
I'm happy to say, I'm on AT&T's 450 plan, I'm paying LESS than I paid at Sprint/Nextel, and the rollover minutes are really stacking up. Depending on what's happening in my life I may need to talk to MORE non-AT&T customers (who fall under free mobile-to-mobile) on any given month than normal. For instance, my fiance is currently stuck in an extended Sprint contract, and I call and text her all the time. Last month, on July 29th, I was surprised to find out, I was within 2 minutes of using up my anytime minutes... I looked over at my rollover minutes and just laughed (I had well over 2500 minutes waiting to be used).
It's like having overdraft protection at your bank. It's great. I used to go OVER my minutes in Sprint all the time accidentally. Now? Not really going to happen. In fact, a friend of mines loved his rollover minutes so much, he was able to DOWN his minute plan, because on those low-usage months, we was able to build up minutes. --And YES, the minutes that you GAIN (on EACH month), expire one year later... but this is month to month.. rolling. So, essentially, you'll always have an entire YEAR'S worth of rollover minutes. When August of next year comes, I'll lose the rollover minutes from August of this year. When September of next year comes, I'll lose the rollover minutes from September of this year. And so on. Moreover, if you downgrade your plan's minutes, you lose ALL the rollover minutes in excess of the total minutes/per month on your plan. So, if you had a 1400 minute plan, and you'd received 3,500 rollover minutes to date... if you downgraded your plan to 450 minutes... you'd only have 450 rollover minutes after your account is updated. Kind of a bummer... but this stops someone from paying for a few months on a high-minute plan, and then downgrading and keeping all the minutes they never used.
I think this is perfectly fine. In fact, I think this is excellent compared to my old carrier plan. It's not a gimmick at all, unless you're someone who doesn't pay attention to your phone minutes and simply buys high-minute or "unlimited" plans so you don't have to think about it.
My iPhone plan costed $59.99/mo. Right now, my iPhone 3G plan costs $74.99 ($69 with 200 texts for $5). Still a far cry from Sprint's $99 "Simply Everything" plan, which I don't need. Sprint's 450 is $69 too. The difference being Sprint has mobile TV, unlimited texts and unlimited nights & weekends, whereas AT&T doesn't include texts and only has 5000 nights & weekends at that level. But, AT&T still one ups Sprint by having rollover minutes, International support in GSM, a larger 3G U.S. footprint, larger U.S. voice coverage without "roaming" and an excellent partner in Apple (giving them visual voice mail, versatile Wi-Fi with web agreements, and AppStore, iTunes and iTunes WiFi store compatibility... which all the DRM on Sprint tracks wouldn't have me touching with a 10 foot pole).
A friend asked me recently, whether I'd have picked AT&T if Apple hadn't been exclusive. Considering that so many CDMA, non-GSM media phones like the Instinct, don't have WiFi are virtually useless outside of a CDMA contract (and my old 2G iPhone is still an awesome device even without phone service), it really makes you ask where you want to place your long-term investments in chargers, iPod-ready radios, mobile apps, and mobile purchased music, etc, etc. Pain in the ass, I say.

Trust me.... the iPhone ain't $h!t either (since we are talking opinion and not facts). And when it comes down to it, I'd rather pay half as much with Sprint than take a service and feature cut to pay twice as much with AT&T.
The iPhone is nice, but not nice enough to shoot myself in the foot, and blindly follow the mindless droves.
And for those that do switch from wherever, it's not AT&T's "anything" that is making them move over, it's the iPhone. If AT&T didn't have the iPhone, I doubt people would be talking this good about them.

Trust me.... the iPhone ain't $h!t either (since we are talking opinion and not facts). Can't trust you. That's certainly one man's opinion, though I think it diminishes you. The iPhone is an unqualified marvel of design, planning, and programming. I won't bore you with refuting some of the inaccurate things you're saying, but exaggerating your savings with Sprint doesn't really do anyone any favors. The savings are what they are, but they're highly dependent on whether you actually need the extra service they're using to acquire you. Moveover, "Cingular" had a more than fine reputation before it became AT&T again... and before the iPhone came along. We could go over AT&T's first quarterly results after the launch and the amount of iPhone activations during that time... but that was widely reported.
The iPhone is nice, but not nice enough to shoot myself in the foot, and blindly follow the mindless droves. Who's saying shoot yourself in the foot? Just check out your coverage maps, review your expenses and cellphone usage patterns. If it doesn't add up, it doesn't add up. If it does... the iPhone is certainly worth the extra effort (if it is indeed extra effort). Of course, that presupposes a lot about what you like to do with your main electronic doodad (a phone). I was going to get a Blackberry. Considering my main need is mobile web browsing... the iPhone is quite literally the best game in town by a large margin, and this is pretty much a universally agreed upon opinion. No gushing needed.
Most of the other phones out there are so embarrassing to browse on, they simply don't offer any in-store demos so they can get people to concentrate on their useless "feature" lists instead of allowing customers to base a purchase decision on actual usage... instead of making excuses later, because they're too lazy or annoyed to cancel their agreements.

Yes I ran out and gt one after 10 years(approx) with nTelos and my trusty candybar model Nokia. Never dropped a call.NEVER. But I just bought a MBP and Ive gone Apple crazy. Inasmuch as the Apple mania goes, I feel the same as I did when I bought my first PacBell in 91. Everthng is new again! Computing is fun, but back t the iPhone...its fun, it is amazing, but it is not purrfect as my cat would say. It drops calls..bigtime. ATT is a lame outfit. LAME. Ntelos was a very civilized outfit and I will miss them. They did nothing to deserve this except be behind the curve. I wanted an iphone. Its bulky, but then its not really a cellphone is it? Its a PDA/laptop/camera, toy...and a cel phone. I went yesterday and had sim card replaced. I trie the 3g turnoff thing, but the problem is this..bad reception mainly. Also had to jump hoops to setup pop.(Went thru gmail)ow I get double emails. Oh well, Ill make a filter or something. But yes the problem is not really the product, its the carrier and their ownership of the service.

On the other hand, when I use words like "unqualified" and "universally agreed", I'm no longer talking about opinion. It's simply a fact. You might begrudge the fact for personal reasons, but it doesn't change the fact.
Not EVERY positive thing someone could say about the iPhone is "the best" or an "unqualified" leader in its function (especially as Apple tends to omit many things)... but as I noted, Safari is. If browsing doesn't mean much to you in the context of the whole device, then that benefit isn't as compelling. When I say "facts", I mean facts. You know... like the amount of Internet usage ballooning about mobile Safari that had Google scratching its head. The capacitive multi-touch is a sizeable part of that experience, and its pretty much exclusive right now. But, that's certainly not the end-all-be-all to having a phone. Certainly changed my habits though.
I have a cousin that works at Microsoft. Recently he conceded that the iPhone is very much the most advanced mobile Internet phone on the market right now. It's some serious stuff going on in this sector right now, and Apple is really causing an explosion.

Universally agreed, isn't a fact, and that's a fact. And there is no begrudging for personal reasons, just open minded thought that can see the difference between fact and convincing opinion. Just because a lot of people like tomatoes, doesn't mean tomatoes taste good to everyone.
Besides what you already claimed, the only thing that's truly a fact is part in bold, and that's what makes the phone so desirable, not AT&T's service or lack thereof.
Which brings up the fight that many non-iPhone supporters have, why not bring the device to the rest of the phone market, of change the game entirely and have unlocked GSM and CDMA versions that users can just buy and tie to the carrier or choice.
NO ONE is saying that AT&T is changing the game, or making innovations, it's all Apple, and AT&T just made the right choice.
Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile, etc. aren't the worst companies ever just because Apple didn't choose them. And when you look at the other side of the iPhone spectrum, the service plan and options, AT&T isn't all that great. If everyone left the strawman and other fallacies behind, it'd be easy to see that the biggest thing keeping the iPhone from exploding even more are the shackles of AT&T.

Universally agreed, isn't a fact, and that's a fact.Reality IS "agreement". If you want to argue that, have fun... but if I can get everyone to "Universally agree" that you have no money in your bank account... I'm sorry, but in reality... you're BROKE. :D
And there is no begrudging for personal reasons, just open minded thought that can see the difference between fact and convincing opinion. Just because a lot of people like tomatoes, doesn't mean tomatoes taste good to everyone. If you say so... I'm pretty open minded... but I'll bristle at faulty or inconsistent logic. You're quibbling just to quibble. There's nothing inaccurate about what I've been saying. By your own terms "most advanced" is an opinion too, but by mine, I'd actually list the new technologies being employed and note how they've not been duplicated elsewhere.
Meh. I think you took offense at me saying "Sprint = Meh", and everything afterwards is just an exercise in being contrary, seeing as how your logic is elliptical when it comes to contesting my points.
I already agreed with most of what you're saying. Which is terrible, seeing as you're repeating it in the contention that I'm saying otherwise. I refuse to repeat my some of these agreements just so you can ignore them and try to make me out to say something I'm not saying.
Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile, etc. aren't the worst companies ever just because Apple didn't choose them.Honestly? I agree with this, and said so. Re-read my posts, man. I had an entire paragraph on evaluating everything about the carrier, the device, etc before making a decision. STRAW MAN WARNING.
And when you look at the other side of the iPhone spectrum, the service plan and options, AT&T isn't all that great. If everyone left the strawman and other fallacies behind, it'd be easy to see that the biggest thing keeping the iPhone from exploding even more are the shackles of AT&T.Well... here's the problem, and hopefully we can stay on target and NOT argue PAST each others point. YOU said "AT&T isn't all that great. That's true... but other phone companies aren't all that great either... so don't drink the Kool-aid (if you're NOT saying this, don't worry about it though... but it sounds like you are by your negative attitude toward AT&T).
I'm not saying AT&T is a god, but they have a number of advantages over other carriers... just as OTHER carriers have advantages over them. GSM is one. T-Mobile is the only other major U.S. carrier on the GSM network. There is an entirely odd argument about CDMA networks, in that they're much more "closed" than a GSM network. Rollover minutes is another. T-Mobile has fave-5 and Hotspots. Sprint has "Direct-Connect" (I used that for a while), and Verizon has a number of nice cross-over programs with their landlines. Loads of value to go around. I think... I THINK... Verizon was the first to introduce $99 unlimited voice plans. I may be wrong. Then everyone else ran to do it (shouting "innovation"!) AT&T have Unlimited Internet long before T-Mobile. When the iPhone launched, T-Mobile scrambled to do it. Now, Rogers is trying not to look like jerks with their new iPhone customers. Verizon and AT&T seemed to make a pledge to pro-rate their cancellation fees, and it still seems like Sprint is playing catch-up.
I would rather people not DUMP on AT&T, OR PRAISE it unnecessarily. All these carriers can do better. It's only through scrutiny and information that we can compare them. I think there was a movement by the FCC to collect detailed reports on cell phone carrier plans and features in connection with the merge of Sprint and Nextel. I would LOVE that to happen in a STANDARD way like the "nutritional guides" on our food... and have that information published to the FCC quarterly or bi-monthly.
There were a number of historic concessions wireless companies seldom gave, that Apple secured with the iPhone. I'm just happy that opened the door for people to wake up about their carriers and their policies. Once we start equivocating or pretending historical limitations or complications are Apple's fault... I think consumers lose. Personally, I'm a little glad Apple held out from implementing features standard to AT&T. Although, I'm a little sad that visual voice mail doesn't make it to all iPhone buyers worldwide.
If carriers were more universal, like ISPs... it would be great. Right now, Google's approach with Android isn't really changing much... because like Microsoft's DRM... they're letting individual carriers pick and choose features, and its going to perpetuate the same old separate-but-unequal experience, as consumers switch networks.
Just AppStore and iTunes WiFi store alone really stuck it to the record industry and carriers who want to control software. Hopefully we'll see more of that kind of licensing-related innovation.
Sprint just took a HUGE attrition hit recently. That's why they offering really good rates. The Instinct is one of the best offerings they have ever made. When I purchased my iPhone though? I was going to go to Verizon and try to get a Blackberry or Nokie N95, because all of Sprints phones were crappy. I'd have LOVED an Instinct in December 2007. That would have been my phone. Now its an also ran, like the Helio Ocean. Yet another phone that bends over backward to supply features... only to because utterly USELESS after you leave the carrier.
That's a problem. I know people that quit AT&T and still use their iPhone. Kind of huge point about what these carriers are doing to you.

OMG! You are so right, everything.
By the way, never said I was trying to start an argument. You are the one that is actually posting trying to convince me to agree to points I already told you I agree with, they are still opinions however.
You are a bit verbose, since you didn't have to write all of this. And this statement has those fallacies, more specifically those strawmans, that I just knew were coming.
Take it easy man, I agree, but what you are saying is still opinion based.

Your original comment that I disagreed with (http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=5971312&postcount=176), was that Sprint let's you pay half the price of AT&T and that were the iPhone on Sprint, you could simply pay $50 to get a new one as opposed to AT&T which, according to your statement, is the reason Apple doesn't offer an insurance plan. I'll leave your comments there. Ah, well. Didn't mean to sound like I was forcing an opinion on you so much as pointing out the flaw in your perspective on Sprint. :: walks off whistling :::

Spoken like a true Zealot.
And I was right about the insurance thing. Go check it out. AT&T and Apple don't want the phone to be insured, and if it was on Sprint's network, it would be half the price of an AT&T plan while giving me insurance/protection and a faster network.
Those are facts. But I have a good feeling you'll blindly ignore them like many iPhone zealots.

no i don't own one because of the "high" prices from at&t
if it would be around 40-50 bucks with like 8gb for a month, i would def. get one but 70 is just too much for me

No, I don't. In general, I love Apple products, but not this one. The price is too high, the terms and conditions imposed by the company one is locked into are far too constricting, and the spec too limited for what is asked financially. I'm hugely impressed with my iPod and MBP, and would happily contemplate the MBA and possibly the touch. However, re the iPhone, I'd wait for 3G, an upgrade in spec and a large reduction in price.

Those are facts. But I have a good feeling you'll blindly ignore them like many iPhone zealots.[/I]Nothing you're saying (about my point of view) bears up with what I've written in my actual posts. But, clearly my posts were too long for you to read and/or they struck a nerve early on, so you're not giving me the benefit of the doubt. I feel bad, because I know I was ribbing you... but honestly, you've formed a skewed impression of what I've been saying if you think I have ANY problem thinking some people will enjoy their Sprint service perfectly fine and do not need an iPhone in the slightest. You keep enjoying yourself though. And I was right about the insurance thing. Go check it out. AT&T and Apple don't want the phone to be insured, and if it was on Sprint's network, it would be half the price of an AT&T plan while giving me insurance/protection and a faster network.[/I]I don't have to check anything out. You said that AT&T and NOT Apple was the reason the phone can't be insured. Re-read the post. I'm clear that APPLE and NOT AT&T is the reason. So, if the iPhone were on Sprint (which is a huge if, considering everything involved), Apple would once again have prevented the carrier from selling insurance, because Apple wishes the product to use its "Apple Care" system. It has nothing to do with the network its on. Also, if it were on Sprint, the plan would NOT be "half the price". I'm currently paying $75/mo. If it were half the price, you're saying that my same plan would cost $38 on Sprint... for 3G access, GPS support, and at least 200 txt messages. Which, you would of course be wrong. The problem there, is that depending on the plan you NEED, you may or may not pay more or less on a different network. That's not zealotry, unfortunately, that's just the truth.
Everything I'm saying is so self-evident, I'm sorry if you don't believe me. I'm not going to debate you further though. You're mad or something, so you're interested in attempting to contradict me without much accuracy to go off of. For instance, a reasonable person would at least acknowledge that everything I'm saying in this post is TRUE, but then go on to say how their own points are valid too... depending on how its looked at.
Anyway. Off to bed. My fiance is giving me the evil eye. These are pretty repetitive postings.
Digital Skunk, if you and I were talking in real life... instead of posting in the ether... this would be a short conversation. I don't care about egos. I'd admit if I was wrong and I'd gladly admit when I'm trafficking opinion. I'm happy you're happy. Be happy I'm happy. I have zero interest in having you believe me. I have a huge interest in not being misunderstood. Which... is unfontunately my cross to bare... because sometimes, that's totally up to the other persons charity.
Take care.

You guys kind of touched on an open platform cell phone... its coming and its not gonna be GSM.... its CDMA... The FCC had an auction on a newly opened band and Verizion paid and don't quote me $3 billion for this band. But only there was a stipulation to buying it, all phones must be OPEN and that don't just mean open to other carriers that means 3rd party apps also. It was kinda crazy but I do believe it was google OR yahoo they put bids in on it too... If it was google I would almost like to think that Apple would have went into works with them with the iPhone and left At&T. But they got out bid.
And just an fyi Sprint was the first, other than Metro PCS to put out a reasonable unlimated plan. They were trying to stear the comp away from Metro in the large city markets. Then all the other company's had to follow.
And I don't know how you can say Sprint don't have a good phone line up... If you were on the 500 unl incoming, you most likely were on a Nextel phone... them SUCK and you wont have a big line up for it... they are doing away with the iden network very soon... most likely in the next year and going to use a VOIP on the high speed EVDOx1 network for their push to talk. So of course you wont have a line up of Nextel phones, go look at the CDMA side, you have a kick @$$ line up of phones... The blackberry pearl the FIRST pearl to have a built in mini sd reader AND had video capability's with a 2.0 mega pixel camera...
But yea you can go over seas with a GSM phone... great... You can do the same thing with the Blackberry 8830 World Phone... But i don't know about you but I don't do much traveling out side the states... YET... But once I get stationed over seas I will just get rid of my Pearl and get the 8830...

It was kinda crazy but I do believe it was google OR yahoo they put bids in on it too... If it was google I would almost like to think that Apple would have went into works with them with the iPhone and left At&T. But they got out bid.EXACTLY what I've been watching. It was Google that made a big push, and then required the other bidders to promise Open Access if the bidding went OVER a certain amount. Google made sure the bidding DID go over that amount, and politicians have been shooting them dirty looks... with nothing substantive to say. I think Google did an excellent job there. Google & Android are playing for the landscape they WANT. Apple is playing for the landscape they HAVE and wish to CAUSE. Microsoft is playing on the landscape there WAS. Nokia is playing on all levels with just good tech and lots of choices. Because many of these other players essentially cater to the existing infrastructure, they're less in a position to change anything. I've heard many of the Android phones are being delayed because the carrier wants to go in and meddle with things before releasing it. I've yet to know if that means good things or bad things for consumers.
Sometimes I feel Apple's iPhone strategy (using carriers as a dumb PIPE, and keeping the customer experience centric to the phone platform) is so powerful, that they're rewriting the rules of what data vendors can reasonably charge for. For instance, "language translation" companies no doubt had special fees for "mobile phone" use (as the music industry does for downloads over a carrier's network). Google recently released Google translate for iPhone. Because "iPhone" is also "iPod Touch", and its also "Wi-Fi" enabled, and "real browser Internet-ready", suddenly its popularity level is going to push people to re-evaluate usage restrictions. Even AT&T had to double-check its data plans because iPhone users were so active.
In order to continue competing with the leading edge of mobile innovation, the whole industry is needing to open itself up piece by piece. Whether its spotlighting the problems with early-termination fees, detailing billing invoices on data usage, or user-application restrictions. I think "tethering" will be the next hot button as the "smart phone" distinction fades to grey.
And just an fyi Sprint was the first, other than Metro PCS to put out a reasonable unlimated plan. They were trying to stear the comp away from Metro in the large city markets. Then all the other company's had to follow. I think that's what I'd heard too.
And I don't know how you can say Sprint don't have a good phone line up... The blackberry pearl the FIRST pearl to have a built in mini sd reader AND had video capability's with a 2.0 mega pixel camera... I have a feeling you're totally right. I've been hearing that Sprint's purchase of Nextel was a big mistake for them. My biggest issue is that cellphone carriers are constantly CHANGING and improving their service... so what was true for me a year ago, may not be accurate today. For instance, Cingular used to be on CDMA I think, and switched over to GSM at some point, and service went all crappy for a while while they continued to build-out. From what I've heard though... the next generation 4G technology, long-term evolution (I think) is GSM. So, both Verizon and AT&T will once again be on the same type network as they roll it out.
But yea you can go over seas with a GSM phone... great... You can do the same thing with the Blackberry 8830 World Phone... But i don't know about you but I don't do much traveling out side the states... YET... But once I get stationed over seas I will just get rid of my Pearl and get the 8830...Can you at least take CDMA into Canada? I think that's the only place I realistically have plans to travel in the next 4-5 years. --Oh, and Barbados.

They say if you upgrade beyond a certain point, it cant be undone.(cant believe this) ANything that can be done..caan be undone(except put toothpaste back inna tube)

Go whatever you want but most likely it is possible upgrading can be undone to any previous firmware. It's just hard to make a software that would do that. For example PSP firmware is very hard to downgrade. You have to use Pandora's battery for all latest firmwares. BTW if you downgrade to first version you can play downloaded from internet PSP games for free.

Regarding hoopla about switching to AT&T just for the iPhone, here's an interesting and relevant study by J.D. Power. According to their results Verizon = Excellent, T-Mobile = Great, AT&T = Good, and Sprint... well, Sprint = Meh.
http://www.rcrnews.com/article/20080814/WIRELESS/220034499/-1/rss01
Verizon Wireless posted a score of 103 in the study, closely followed by its future sibling Alltel Communications L.L.C. with a score of 102. T-Mobile USA snagged third place with a score of 100 and AT&T Mobility was in fourth with 97, just above the industry average of 96. Sprint Nextel Corp. was the only carrier in the survey to score below the industry average, posting a score of 79.
Which ain't much different than last year...
http://www.businessweek.com/technology/content/jul2007/tc20070726_020033.htm
Once again, Sprint Nextel (S) finds itself at the bottom of the wireless provider heap when it comes to customer service. For the fourth time running, Sprint Nextel received the lowest ranking among the largest mobile-phone service providers in a semi-annual study of customer care by J.D. Power & Associates. As well as the year before that.
My fiance was clearly complaining to me about Sprint again. They kept saying she owed them twice as much as she did, until she finally got in touch with the right person, they agreed with her, and peace finally reigned.
The biggest thing people switching to AT&T have to deal with is the fact that the iPhone's 3G implementation is dealing with problems for some people. Apple doesn't have much time to "right" this, although I don't personally have much of an issue after the last update.

That's the funny thing. That's exactly my combination as well. I have my second gen iPhone 3G white (because I couldn't keep waiting for the black) and my 1st gen iPhone sitting in a cradle at home. My fiance has already requested it for use just as an iPod, but I'm using it for development... so I'm a little torn. I'm going to stop being a dick on the issue soon though. She'd consider using it as her phone, but she's locked into Sprint until the end of next year (or until I look over her cellphone history and find a spectacular loop hole somewhere).
I'm a little pissed though. I wanted to be able to switch my SIM between the two phones and use whichever one I wanted (maybe have a different music selection or app selection on either depending on my needs for the day), but re-activating the old phone would be required. Which gets messy. :p The whole "going somewhere volatile, let me take me lamer, older phone", would have been a great use.

This was my thinking since I am not a business person on the go every place I tend to be the internet is already there.
My work place - internet at my desk
Home - internet 3 computers
Over at a friends or family's place they all have internet really easy to jump online etc.
School - College PC labs all over the place etc.
Out and about just having fun I depend on my standard cell phone and don't check email or text :) I am just an average Joe I don't receive mission critical emails or text.

I don't own an iPhone and won't until I can get out of my Sprint Contract. I can't afford the phone and the Sprint disconnect right now.

No. Amazing piece of technology, but not for me. Too expensive, and overkill for my needs. Also, I need to have buttons so I can text without looking! I do own a Touch though, so I can still do the Internet on the move thing (though mostly I use it for surfing at home anyway...come on Macbooks!). I'm a cheap PAYG person :D.

I was leery about not having buttons, too, but I was able to start texting without looking pretty quickly. The spell check feature helps a lot with that, too. And as far as I know, I've only made a couple of typos, one of which happened because I was texting while sick.

I have some cheapo cellphone from Verizon. It's a prepaid account. The iPhone looks cool, and I'm sure it is. Really, I don't use my cellphone enough to justify spending money on an iPhone.

Yup, 8 gig gen 1 jailbroken and unlocked. Nice having all these apps without dealing with Applesoft's shenanigans.

The iPhone is a great device, great technology. But it's not for me. I do not "rely" on mobile technology. My job does not require me to be on a cell phone all day. So for the most part, my cell phone is just for emergencies (e.g. in case of an auto accident), etc.
I locked in a really really cheap monthly rate from T-Mobile over 3 or 4 years ago. It's a basic plan. I pay $29.95 (plus tax) each month. This is like 3 times less than most others pay for their absurd mobile fees.
I know that T-Mobile hates it that I'm able to hold onto this "super-cheap rate" for years now. But it suits me fine. I have no reason to upgrade.

Yeah, the wife and I have the T-Mobile plan as well - $60 per month with something like 1,000 shared minutes for the two lines (both on iPhones). We don't use T-Zones, although it can be used with the iPhone. Great phone, great service.

sure do. 8gb iphone. i love the product, but as a phone, i like my old w580. the lack of buttons makes it hard to use when you're not actually looking at the screen :p

I just don't use my cellphone very much. The rest of the features would be cool to have, for even with a 4GB refurb and the extra data plan, that'd $700 for the next year.
