View Full Version : Whats your bandwidth?

According to www.bandwidthplace.com I have a connection speed of 2.5 Megabits per second (2.5Mbps).

How about all of you guys?

(by the way, if there is a more accurate, bandwidth measuring service online, please post the link!)

I'd carry this knowledge with a little bit of salt as it is highly averaged. Everybody will have different bandwidths dependant upon what service they use (obviously), what server they are connecting to, what time of day the connection is taking place, and where you are in the world (connecting from).

i like the test at www.dslreport.com they pause your connection first and it seems to be more accurate unless you mess with it ( i don't know how but the people at spymac always mention it )

According to that site, I got 2.4 Mbps.

When I was downloading the new Panther build the other night, I got between 2.4 and 2.7 Mbps.

LOL....31.9 kilobits per second. I'm still stuck in the stone age...dial-up. That will chage in a month or two. Here I come Broadband!!

393.2 kilobits per second

A bit off the quoted 512 I get from my ADSL, but probably not that far off. I'm going to upgrade to 2Mb/s soon.

I'm not at home right now but when I have run that speed test before :-)

Earthlink (Covad DSL)

1.5/384

overhead

1.3/341

The best part about my DSL is I can almost see the Central Office, so I get pings on game servers on 17-24ms

I'm on dial-up right now because i'm on a trip but here are these speed results>http://www.dslreports.com/speedtests/4366;17214;7d0b3c44f03f74a23dc3fc2a8c3c29c6;2.0;www.dslreports.com/1060370962

Wonder what it will be like with IPv6 :P

That's a pretty interesting test --

I wound up with 3.4 mbit/sec which the sight informed me was "fantastic" -- a nice touch. It's like a pat on the back for something that I had nothing to do with....

Keith Purfield

802.5 Kilobytes per second.

But I'm also on a network that my brother is currently on, so I couldn't really test my actual speed.

Oh, and idea_hamster, I also got that fantastic. I think they're just trying to make people feel good. :p

Oh, that just *ruins* it! For a moment there, I felt so...so special...so, well, fanstastic -- now I just feel used! Manipulated! Do they have no sense of decency? At long last, have they no sense of decency?

These bandwith threads always get intresting when college students are back on campus. Last year there was a thread on anandtech.com where speeds were in the 75-100mb/s range. The connection testers couldn't keep up to the bandwith.

Communications

1.3 megabits per second
How communication devices are rated. Kilo means 1,000 and mega means 1,000,000. Examples include 56k modem and 10Mbit Ethernet

Storage

156.6 kilobytes per second
The way data is measured on your hard drive and how file sharing and FTP programs measure transfer speeds. Kilo is 1,024 and mega is 1,048,576.

1MB file download

6.5 seconds
The time it would take you to download a 1 megabyte file at this speed.

Could someone please explain to me why one downloads in kiloBYTES a second (for most of us), yet connection speeds refer to your connection in kiloBITS. Is there any purpose to this, or is it just to make us think our connection is better than it really is? 8 kilobits = 1kilobyte, right?

He has to have T1/T3 (there is no T2 is there?)

I really doubt he has a main line from the company like AT&T OC768...

Or if you run your own ISP...

I myself get 2.6 megabits per second on bandwitch place...

DSL reports:

Not usual for this time of day, normally a lot higher.

38.2 kbits/sec. The fastest dial-up so far. That's cuz I'm dialing into my school and since most people here don't realize they can (and probably wouldn't want to either) the connection to the school is quite nice. I am sharing this 24/7 connection with 3 others though, so it can bog down a bit.

It does, but only by a few microseconds. Just don't make a big deal out of that difference. I know of a few mathematical perfectionists who noticed a difference between their multiple T1 lines and their dial-up modem. They wanted to sell their modem for $50 per rant. When the house inspector came by the following week, he offered to pay these guys for cable and to shut up. :D

Lol... that's pretty funny.

I'm at some silly college campus... Right now I'm fudging between 6.4 and 6.6 each time. I'll try DSL reports now...

It's telling me 4743 / 2733...
Then again, I have to go all the way across the ********** country to do the test (I'm on east coast)

At home: 1.6 Mbps.

DSL Reports:
1.4 Down, 400 Up. No wonder my KDX server is so slow - that's only 50 K across the whole server.

Is there any other way to check it?

But if you think about it logically this test *only* makes sense to east coast users because does every site you go to or every place you get data from are on the east coast?

I don't think so.

Go download a file... find out how long it took... ect.

Get the file off of some server with a ton of bandwidth
