Whats your bandwidth?

I'd carry this knowledge with a little bit of salt as it is highly averaged. Everybody will have different bandwidths dependant upon what service they use (obviously), what server they are connecting to, what time of day the connection is taking place, and where you are in the world (connecting from).

i like the test at http://www.dslreport.com they pause your connection first and it seems to be more accurate unless you mess with it ( i don't know how but the people at spymac always mention it )

2.2 megabits per second, so thats like 267 kb/sec which I guess is pretty good?

According to that site, I got 2.4 Mbps.

When I was downloading the new Panther build the other night, I got between 2.4 and 2.7 Mbps.

1.2Mbps.

LOL....31.9 kilobits per second. I'm still stuck in the stone age...dial-up. That will chage in a month or two. Here I come Broadband!!

I got 914.9 kilobits/sec from my cable connection. I'm not complaining since the company I work for is paying for it.

That's a pretty interesting test --

I wound up with 3.4 mbit/sec which the sight informed me was "fantastic" -- a nice touch. It's like a pat on the back for something that I had nothing to do with....

But I'm also on a network that my brother is currently on, so I couldn't really test my actual speed.

Oh, and idea_hamster, I also got that fantastic. I think they're just trying to make people feel good.

with my adsl i get 1.2 down. but later this month when they turn on digital cable im gonna start bringing home the cable modem from work and plugging it in, so i can download on my mac and then play games on my pc.

These bandwith threads always get intresting when college students are back on campus. Last year there was a thread on anandtech.com where speeds were in the 75-100mb/s range. The connection testers couldn't keep up to the bandwith.

i got 2.1-2.5 Mb/s on the 4 tests i ran... not bad, it's like 250-280 KB/s, and i am hoping to get around 300-350 late at night on my cable. a lot of my friends do, heh, and i just switched from DSL to cable. thanks for reminding me to benchmark it.

bits and bytes

Could someone please explain to me why one downloads in kiloBYTES a second (for most of us), yet connection speeds refer to your connection in kiloBITS. Is there any purpose to this, or is it just to make us think our connection is better than it really is? 8 kilobits = 1kilobyte, right?
