View Full Version : Running Naked.. and Loving It

With all the talk of cases and screen protectors and various ways to cradle, carry or otherwise tote an Apple iPhone around, I am curious how many people are still "running naked" with their iPhone and loving it.. meaning, no ill effects or notable marks to show for it (BTW, I am in this group.)

I am also curious who might have gone from "running naked" to "wearing protection" (cough) as a result of scuffs, damage or other ill-gotten markings on their (previously naked) iPhone. What scratched your iPhone? Where was it scratched?

Thanks for sharing, sorry for the puns. ;)

I originally bought the Incase rubber case but didn't like the stretching so now I have an Incase pouch that I carry it in only when I'm at work. Otherwise I carry it around naked. I used to be afraid of dropping it or something when I quit using the rubber Incase case but after using it a few days, it feels fine now. :)

I'm too afraid to carry it around naked... I got the iSkin

I too got the incase rubber sleeve. It did what it does and scratched up the bezel so I took it off. I then did the brushed metal treatment on the bezel to lose the scratches but missed the protection of the incase. So I put it back on knowing I could just buff out any bezel scratches. It scratched again and it's been totally naked for the last two weeks and I fixed up the bezel. Love the phone with no case and there are no scratches, nicks, dings other than from the incase.

Still running naked. (freecallin? :D)

I am not much for cases on my iPhone or iPod, except for my otterbox by the pool on my iPod photo. But I have always been pretty careful with my personal electronics, so don't worry too much.

I have since last Saturday when I bought it, been shopping for cases since. I have a leather skin on the way. I'm not afraid to let it go naked, just as a precautiuon. I also thing that the added bulk on the case makes the iPhone a little eaiser to grip while typing.

I have also been naked since iDay. The bulk added by the average case and the way it alters the form factor is one of the reasons I prefer it this way... the feel!

No case for me, I like to travel light. I keep it in the "watch pocket" of my Levis and it doesn't have one scratch on it.

You should at least consider the Power Support Crystal film. It feels exactly like the glass but smoother and makes the iphone less smudgier. I got the BestSkinsEver film to protect the outside from bumps and scratches... Already had a few scratches from the dock. While i definitely prefer a naked phone, i learned my lesson from my first ipod. After owning it for a year it looked like crap with all the sctatches. When i bought my nano i put the invisibleshield film on it and it looks barely used after years of abuse.

I don't like cases either but I do have an egrip on it. I only installed it on the back. Now my iphone is much less slippery. It also helps keep it in place when in the car, etc. Worth adding if you don't like using a case.

Brando UltraClear from Hong Kong works great as well. Feels like glass, perfect fit. only drawback is the 2-3 wk shipping from across the pacific.

no scratches - I just remember my front left pocket is for the phone, nothing else. Had it in a case the first two weeks and it was just bulky. I'm only worried about dropping it, seems VERY scratch resistant, even after accidentally pocketing it with keys, paperclips, etc....no scratches.

I use invisibleSHIELD for the back and sides. For the front, I use the PowerSupport screen protector from Apple store. You can hardly notice that it is on there.

I am looking a horizontal case or holster to hold it on my belt, one of them is the Hipcase from DLO.

Never bought a case since the day I got it (June 29th of course :) )

Still naked to this day and still looks like I just got it out of the box. I use it heavily though so I commend it's resistance to visual marks.

i boughta few cases, and all have not really fit my taste or failed, the one that failed is the incase rubber case, just stretch's out beyond are anal apple existence will tolerate after one time pulling it off to dock or to clean!, the other is the iqase side and swift, they just arent my style, i need a body wrap, the side is a beautiful case for what it is, a hip case, and if anyone would like to purchase either send me a PM, and an offer.

but it's to slippery for me. I dropped it the day after iDay and it slid across a tile floor (no scratches!), so it went into a case-mate case and only comes out at night to sleep naked in its cradle (ah, I mean dock).

I've been running naked since day one as well- and it's still good as new. Granted, I do keep it in a pocket that has nothing else in it.

such big decisions to make!

i took off my incase to find my silver border HORRIBLY scratched.
should i put it back on and ignore the scratches for the protection, or do i take it off and let my iphone, too, run naked?

(note KNOCK ON WOOD, i have never dropped one of my electronic devices, but there is always a first.)

I have had mine naked since June 29th, no scratches, not even on the apple or metal.

I do have it in a iPod sock sometimes though, like if I have alot of stuff in my pockets like keys and coins.

I'm not using a case, as most I have seen are just horrible looking.

I'm going to purchase a pouch to have sometimes, but that's it.

I just got the Power Support Crystal Jacket, which has a clear acrylic case and one crystal film. For $30 I think it's a good deal as you can choose whether to go film-only, case-only or both.

I had to go with case-only since I screwed up the application and got bits of lint and dirt stuck to the film. :o I really like the case though, shows off the phone and is much easier to grip.

Never had mine in a case since iDay. I carry it it my pocket all day, every day.
Not a single scratch.
Some friends have had their cases scratch the chrome.
And there was a post on this site about invisible shield (I think) pulling paint of his iPhone.
Naked is the way it was designed to ride!:)

I went commando for about 2 months before finally getting a case. Never had any scratches and never dropped it, although it was always a concern because it is kind of hard to hold onto sometimes. I ended up getting the canvas InCase, because I figure my luck has to run out sometime. :)

I started out naked, but purchased the Agent18 case, just to be sure.

Well, low and behold, the case actually scratched my iPhone...whereas it was perfect before I had put it on.

So, I'm back to running nekkid and lovin it!

im also running naked with my touch. only reason i got a case was to protect screen but hey you have to touch the screen with these devices.

needless to say i dont regret it as i have 0 scratches on screen. i mean why buy a product for the design then uglify it with cases lol

No case but i have a Martin Field Overlay Screen Protector simply because it gives an added protection allows me to easily wipe smudges and keeps the screen pristine (yes i know its made of wipeable glass)

Was gonna install an invisible shield on the back but that didn't quite work out so i've given up. After all, the back is not the same scratchy metal found on the iPods. The phone is now partially naked....only the screen protector is applied which is fine since i keep the phone in a separate pocket with nothing else

Will probably pickup a sock later on...probably.

How do you find the Martin Field overlay, is it really clear, gloss, or matte? I use an Exim one, just curious because the MF are more easily available.

i didn't have a case on it and after 3 weeks I have a scratch on the screen. I'm hoping if i get a screen cover it might hide the scratch. It had to have been my keys when they were in my purse together. Oh well :(

Its clear you couldn't tell it was installed unless you look for it. It also handles sunlight well and you see the screen clearly and don't get a shimmering effect like some matte options.

Drawbacks are it takes smudges like the normal glass easily but can be wiped off and its not precision cut like the invisible shield which means there's about a millimeter or two exposure around the home button and earpiece nothing major. Im guessing they wanted to make sure the earpiece/home buttons weren't obstructed in any way...at least thats what i say to make me feel better

You can get an idea of the fitting here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=4379661#post4379661). Its somewhat dark but....

I bought the Incase rubber case when I first got the iPhone but have since removed that and put on the Best Skin Ever skin and retired the case. Seems to be going well so far. I've had the Invisible Shield on my last two iPods so the piece of mind that was established with those products is great to have with my iPhone.

I got my iPhone within the first few weeks, and was going to pick up one of those crystal sheet things, or some kind of case, but... never got around to it.

I pride myself on using my stuff though. I want it to work but I don't overly baby things, and sadly, I have dropped my iphone a few times, sometimes face down onto asphault. Each time it's horrifying but each time it's come up clean. No scratches at all on the face, a very minimal marks on the back of it, when people see it they assume it's newer than it is.

I am shocked at how durable this thing is out of the box.

I'm just shocked at how some of us can drop it on the concrete and not get a scratch on the face, but others can just have it in there pocket and come up with a scuff.

My maid dropped her vacuum cleaner in my house once, and as it fell, the handle scraped the TV screen and left what looked like a huge gash. I called my warranty company, they sent two guys out, and in the end, the scratched ended up wiping off with some cleaner. I was shocked, I was absolutely sure it was a gash in my screen. It felt like it and everything. I wonder if that's possible on the iPhone screen?

I had a Contour iSee, but that scratched the bezel up, especially on the bottom. Took it off after a week and have never used it again.

No more scratches from that point. The only scratches I have are on the bezel and on the Apple logo (it came that way).

Most of these things I try remind me of old people who cover their furniture in plastic. That's kind of my reasoning, it creeps me out. I may try the invisishield someday, I don't know.

Usually my 5G has a CoreCase Aluminum case, but every now and then I would slip it out.. Let it be naked for a while, just enjoy it.. But then back into the case..

My Nano usually naked, but I have some Titanium spray that protects it. But it looks naked..

my iPhone when I get it most likely will be naked...

But, then again, I don't carry my couch everywhere with me in my pocket and use it every few minutes. I agree that plastic-covered couches are indeed creepy, but in my case, it's necessary to protect my electronics obsessively.

I must confess I am on my 2nd iPhone though...

I dropped mine in my garage as I leaned forward and it fell out of my shirt pocket (I screamed :) ) and it got a little dent on the silent switch. It also got some tiny little scratch by the send button in SMS mode, and so it was time for it to go. I posted it on Craigslist for $25 cheaper and posted pics of it. A guy bought it, and said it was worth the discount.

Now I am going on 3 months with my new one and am still without blemish. I gotta have the smallest possible, so no case for me!

Running naked since day one. (Yes :)).
No scratches, always alone on any pocket. Heavy use.
But sadly, now it has a few small dents, as i have dropped it accidentally several times. Slippery fish. But feel bad with couple cases I have.

Naked and loving it... YES until I find something with no bulk, no film, and no hiding my ego.

I'm buying an iPhone on Saturday and I will put a screen protector on it, but I dont really want to put anything else on it. I'm not too worried about dropping it or anything, but how is the back of the iphone for scratching? iPods scratch like crazy on their metal backs, but the iPhone is brushed aluminum isnt it? Just wondering how it stands up to daily routines.

I'm beginning to think that using cases scratches the chrome more than going naked. I had the Agent18 but it totally scratches up the narrow chrome trim on top (not the other part) so it did more damage than good in terms of scratches. it was also slippery to hold and made it feel much heftier. Not recommended.

I now use the Seidio rubberized case and although it's not as sturdy and protective as the Agent18, it is extremely minimal and doesn't add almost any size to the iphone. It also looks really sleek and feels good in the hand. Just thought I'd mention it for those who want something that doesn't make the phone much bigger.

I've been running my iPhone with just the screen protector also since I got it.

I was actually planning on getting a case for it a week or two after I bought it, but after using it without a case for so long I really like it "naked."

Although, I am very concerned about dropping it. As many have mentioned, the sides are really slippery, and there have been several times it's almost flown out of my hand on nasty concrete surfaces where I'm sure the phone would've gotten ridiculously scratched up.

If there was a case that I would want to get, it's probably one of those Vaja cases. I'm so torn!

EvryDayImShufln
Dec 13, 2007, 10:01 PM
The vaja cases make the iPhone thicker than they let on, trust me. When I hold a naked one these days, I'm amazed at how small and thin they are.

Even though I'm generally very careful (I dropped my last phone once in 1 year) I dont wanna take a chance and drop my iPhone. With my luck, the screen will break and that'll be the end of it. So I got the vaja ivolution, it's very nice looking, protects the iPhone very well in most places including the screen so no need for a protector.

My Vaja has left a couple of marks, but not very noticeable at all. Infact I only spotted them once.

I did not get the belt clip because I dont want any of that "ultimate clip" crap, I want the real rivet clip. I bought the rivet set off ebay, but I have yet to find a way to attach it without destroying or cutting holes in the case lol.

I've never had a case on my iPhone and the only scratches are on the back, which I don't really care about. My screen is still flawless and I'll take the slight cosmetic damages to the unimportant part of the phone than to add the bulk of a case.

I also don't bother with a case for mine. I don't see the point given that the metal part is pretty durable. As for the glass, that's probably the only part that could break with any ease, but no case is going to protect that since you need to have it exposed to use the phone.

Honestly, cases ruin the look of it anyway. :)

Jan 18, 2008, 02:29 PM
Mine is naked. It did fall about a foot onto a marble floor and took a small dent near the headphone jack. I also managed to make a small scratch on the glass somehow. It sort of bothers me, but on the other hand I wouldn't enjoy the phone as much if it were in a case... it sort of loses its iPhone-ness, and also gets a lot chunkier. I don't blame anyone for using a case, though.

I considered a Vaja case, but the iVolution I used on my 3G iPod back in the day made it feel huge. I also found myself worrying a lot about the case since I paid so much for it... but I was more obsessed with keeping the iPod pristine.... not that it mattered since any case I put it in scratched it anyway.
