Hi
Just wondering if there are any free programs like garageband for windows? (I'm not joining the dark side, it's for a friend!)
Thanks for any advice

Modplug Tracker is the only free Windows music production application I know of.
I think FruityLoops is the closest but it's not free.

I'm a longtime fan of Audacity, although GarageBand puts it to shame.

Audacity isn't all that great. It's good as a basic audio editor, but it isn't a sequencer, doesn't have particularly great audio algorithms (and hence doesn't sound very good) and has really rubbish FX integration.
No virtual instruments either, it's a completely different thing to GB.

If you can install Linux, you could use Ardour....
