im thinking of constructing this so i dont have to take of my already streching silicone case.

(horrible paint drawing)
but what woods would i need, and what other things could i do to make it better in design?

I think some Bass wood that you could find at any hobby shop would work fine.

Just use a regular ipod dock. I use one from a 3rd generation ipod with the white cover taken off. I'm guessing that the 'universal' docks without an insert in place will fit just fine as well.

I'm sorry but I don't get it. Why do you need this stand when I am not using my iPhone I just put it in the charger. I might be interested in a horizontal stand so I could prop up the phone while watching a movie or video. But why would you need a vertial stand?

hehe glad you like.
The reason for this stand is so i can see my iphone screen while on my desk (incoming calls, texts, email, etc without picking it up), without taking off the case. I hold it for video viewing so i dont need a horizontal stand.

i added two little black pieces to i can see the screen better.
edit:

Would have been much more attractive in brushed aluminum to perfectly match other devices (:apple: monitors, G5 & Mac-Pro desktop cases, etc...) that are sitting on our desks already.
Take a look at these more attractive (coordinating) products:
G-Drive (http://www.g-drive.com/Products/G-RAID-mini.cfm)
Laptop Stand (http://www.powersupportusa.com/products/macbook_dockingstand.php)

Yeah a good stand which does landscape and is sturdy enough to be pushed when on the desk, as well as good cable management, would be really good to see. I concur, I want a Rain look.

Interesting that the Touch iPod comes with a stand. Dang.
The small acryllic one in the ad is all I want. Just something to work on an airplane's tray table. Can probably add some type of sticky-ish feet so it doesn't slide much.

I just googled "iphone stand" and got a number of excellent ideas, including a business card-turned stand, and business card holders available at Office Depot for less than $1. I'll check out the Officemax store today. I also just need the stand while watching video during flights

Nope, no stand included with my fiance's Touch. I think they changed the specs at the last minute. [EDIT: I might have missed the stand, as I recall a nondescript piece of plastic. Will check once I get home.]
For $5 or less, you can go to an arts/crafts/hobby store like Michaels and pick up a wooden easel / plate / desktop picture frame holder thing. This would hold the iPhone (or Touch) vertically or horizontally. That's what I'm planning on buying, once I get near Michaels again.

The Belkin Sleek Acrylic Case for iPhone sold at ATT Wireless stores is a great product. Got it after my rubber iCase stretched out.
Comes with a removable belt clip that doubles as a stand and has a specifically designed hole for the rubber hook that mounts to your dashboard.
Similar to http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=374513.
This is only sold at the ATT Wireless store for $30. For whatever reason.
Good case!

Honestly, I don't think the designers at Belkin expected users to stand it on end just to look at the iPhone's home screen. It works perfectly in landscape mode to watch videos. Plus with the belt clip, car dash attachment, a design that doesn't distract from the screen and the fact that it doesn't break when removing it to clean the iPhone makes it a decent case for me. Not to mention that the belt clip/stand is removable. :D

FYI - the easel is by Tripar International, model 28-1633:
http://www.tripar.com/products.php?trID=&search=28-1633
Tripar doesn't sell direct, but if you're trying to find it, at least you know what to look for. I got mine from Seldon McCallister Antiques.
The easel doesn't work if the iPhone/iPod Touch is standing on its narrow end, but is a great fit if it is on its side: perfect for video.

The small stand in the picture with the iPod Touch came with the 1st gen model. They didn't include a stand with the second gen. It works if you use it for watching a movie, but it has no grip for using the touchscreen or even if you have headphones attached to it (it moves around).

It doesn't look much but it has some channels in the base to direct the sound from the speaker. I tried one in a shop and its like when you cup your hand around the speaker, it makes it much louder.
There is an aperture in it so you can feed the cable through too.
