With the itunes music store, it will be getting more frequent. Unless i have made previous plans, i do not spontaniously buy cds. ($$$) IMS should change that soon...('')

I normally just download music from Kazaa when I am at home and burn to discs for when I go back to school. I'll probably start buying the legal way once I upgrade my PowerBook so I can run OS X an iTMS. I just cannot justify wasting anymore money buying $15-20 CDs to get one or two good songs and not listening to the rest of the CDs after that. Besides, listening too much of one artist on one CD has never been a favorite of mine, I like variety.

I voted for "weekly" .. but my habits are a little crazier than that .. some weeks I'll buy a whole bunch, and then another week I won't buy anything (except for one CD, I haven't bought any physical discs since iTMS started). But anyway .. I consider it weekly :D

i never got into iTMS... i prefer to own the CDs. what i usually do is download music now and then, rip friends' CDs, and so on, looking for good stuff. when i find bands i really like, i go out and buy their music at a store. usually i end up binge buying. i went to the CD store awhile ago and bought 100$ of CDs... i do that a few times a year.

Agh.. I haven't bought a CD in... about a year and a half. iTMS probably won't change that either... this is getting dangerous.

It's probably because I never really like a band for longer than 2 weeks.

I probably only buy music once or twice a month, but when I do I tend to pick up 4 or 5 CDs. As I live outside the USA using the iTMS is not an option, but even if it was I think I would still buy CDs. It's like having a backup from the start (as I rip all the CDs I buy and then stick them on a shelf apart from listening to them in the car).

I think it's pretty sad that so many people have given up on music. I find worthwhile music EVERYWHERE. Show me a pop artist with only one good song and I'll show you fifty other artists who have solid albums. To say that there isn't anything worth your money is to shut out the possibility that anyone is composing music that is clever or new.

New music every week.

I too have a very bingey relationship with music. Will go for weeks without buying anything and then will venture to a record shop and find myself walking out with an armful of vinyl and a lot less cash...

For my household, p2p activity tends to involve stuff which we'd never dream of buying, bought on cassette 10 years ago or the odd hard-to-find nugget - "I'm gonna spend my Christmas with a Dalek" being a case in point.

I live in the UK so iTMS isn't an option yet :(

I voted weekly, and it's a partial truth.

I have a subscription to emusic.com, which I use on a weekly basis. I also buy on iTMS maybe every few weeks. So, technically, I guess I could say I buy weekly since I'm paying & using the emusic service. ;)

as you can see by my sig i'm kind of a music junkie...
i don't buy all the time though. my friends and i generally share everything we get, then if there's something i hear that i love i'll usually end up buying it too. plus there's all the stuff i'll buy on my own..no timetable though, but i seem to always have something new to listen to. there's always a couple of things that will monopolize my iPod and lead to a backlog of new stuff to hear ;)

There are two reasons why I hardly ever buy new music:
1. As I'm in the studio day in & day out making records for artists, I kinda loose track of what's going on out there. This is sad, really, since I'm trusted by my clients to come up with something good...
2. iTMS doesn't exist here yet (Norway, that is...). It would be sooo simple and easy to shed a few bucks, and get new inspiration. The irony of this is that most audio pros use macs to make a living. Please, Apple let us join in...!

Whenever something new comes out that I like, I will buy it. On average I probably only buy music once every couple months.

WHAAAAAAT Okay, I buy CD's at least 5 times a month, Picking up anywhere from 10-20 cd's in that time period. My record was 50 in a month, but whatever. I honestly cannot believe that you buy a CD and only like one or two tracks. Perhaps the record stores in your area suck, or you are listening to the wrong music, but I have only spent more than 20 dollars on a CD, when it was a Limited Edition 2 cd set, and that was 21.08. The majority of the CDs I buy are between 9-14 dollars new, granted, these are Independent artists, but I enjoy their music, and can honestly say I do not dislike or skip any songs on the albums I have purchased in the past 18 months. Before, when I listened to mainstream music, I would buy albums, and like you said, only enjoy three songs and hate the rest. FYE/Media Play/ K Mart are not music retailers. Locally owned establishments are, not only will you find your major label stuff, you will find gobs more music in terms of independent artists. Think of it this way, with the number of bands out there, the 100-200 that get radio play are only a small fraction of the music scene. You are neglecting thousands of other artists, who could potentially be more your kind of music. It is a more specialized kind of music in my opinion, I don't listen to what everybody else listen's to, nor do I want to. I honestly feel, that if you only like three songs on an album, to take a more serious look at the world of independent music.

As for me, I get music once every 5-6 days, whenever I get cash I buy CDs and in volume. My iTunes Library is 24 gigs of my own personal music. Not downloaded stuff.

I put down "monthly."

I used to buy CDs all the time. Then I got into the download faze. After that, I just downloaded stuff that couldn't be bought (i.e. live, alternate tracks, and stuff not available here). The novelty wore off and now I'm back to buying. However, because of the Internet, I rarely buy discs blindly; usually I've heard some tracks before.

I don't see a buck a song as being too expensive. My father made a 30+ year living as a successful professional musician, but by no means is rich. That one dollar has to go to lots of people, not just the star artist, like backup musicians (e.g. my dad), sound crew, etc. etc. who are trying to make a living in what can be a tough business. It's not all glamour, even for a rocker!

It would be like somebody coming up to any one of us and saying we weren't worth nearly what we are being paid for our jobs. I dunno about you but I feel overworked and underpaid as it is... same thing can go for the people behind the scenes in the music biz.

I don't buy music cd's anymore. The only exception is any new Metallica album. Sadly the last 3 have sucked...

I would rather spend money on DVD's myself. These box sets of season 1 of this or season 4 of that are really starting to kill me.....

I purchase a CD when a good movie soundtrack is available. The last purchase was "Chicago."

It used to be that I'd buy CD's two or three times a year, and be disappointed by roughly half of what I bought.

Since the iTMS came online, I've been buying at least a CD's worth of music each month, and getting stuff I'd never have heard of sticking to radio as my new music source (not many of my friends are into the indie scene, or share my tastes, so there's a limited amount of new music to be had from friends). Each time I venture further into buying just on the strength of the previews--too bad they're not longer. I've browsed an entire category and bought some of the recommendations. And the proportion of disappointments has been MUCH smaller.

Can't wait for the indies to go up on the iTMS. Whoo!

That's been my experience as well. I HATE getting stuck for the price of a CD with just 2-3 good tracks on it. With iTMS, those days are gone. If the Chili Peppers and Metallica don't like it, my advice is to make better albums and the problem will cure itself.

I bough "Dogstar"'s cd "Happy Ending" a couple weeks ago. that was the first actual cd i bought in about 6 months. And i only bought it from FYE because iTMS did't have it. So i guess im in the multiple times/year group.

PS Dogstar rules.
PPS Yes, it is the band where Keanu Reeves plays bass.

I would say that I buy CDs alot less than once a year. I hardly ever listen to the radio, too. Music isn't really my cup of tea. No matter what I listen to, it is just boring. I haven't been in a music store in atleast 3 years. I am sure that if I had iTMS, I might buy monthly (a song or two per month). Until then, I don't think music will become any bigger a part of my life.

I buy music once annually.

Each year, at least one major store offers all CDs for $9.99 on Black Friday. I go to that store, buy all they have at that price, then move on to the next store and make them match it, and buy them out of what I want.

Last year, it took Circuit City, Best Buy and Fry's and I was done by lunch.

w00t! Apple has expanded the iTMS by leaps and bounds, this week. Check the list by selecting "Just Added" from the left column of the store. Excuses not buying music grow thinner!

once a year or less frequently.

I have only bought CDs with my own money a couple times. I either burn everything else, or am given CDs for birthdays etc.

I haven't bought a cd in about 4 years. I just can't justify that kind of a waste of money when I could just have it for free. I realize it really does have an impact on the industry, but again, I don't have the disposable income to buy cd's on a student budget. I currently have 10 gigs of music, now try to fathom how much it would have cost me to legally buy all that in the space of a year.....
