Charging in car

I've got one of those USB car adaptors, with a USB port on it for plugging a USB lead into it...will I be able to plug my iPhone into this and charge it in my car (using the dockconnector-USB lead)?

i have one from sendstation (designed for the original shuffle) and it works well on the iphone as well as my sandisk express and of course the old shuffle. I also tried one that I got from a cheap cell phone accessory store and it does not work. So it depends on the adapter.
