itunes files aren't recognized anymore?

have a strange problem, all my itunes music (apple lossless) was on an external drive, and when browsing through itunes noticed some songs were missing, after doing an add to library, the songs were still not imported. looking in the music folder they are still there but neither itunes nor quicktime will play the files , quicktime says its not a recognized file :(.

Do you have another machine you could test the files on? If they're not playing in QuickTime then it's no wonder iTunes won't play them as QuickTime provides the playback engine for iTunes.
