Okay, I'll fess up ... I bit on this one. I've been eyeing their cases since I saw the iWood for the nano (first gen), but have been able to restrain myself until now.

The irony, of course, is that after having gone through five cases in the first few weeks after iDay, I'm now fully embracing (and appreciating) the iphone's nakedness. So, undoubtedly, this case will sit in a drawer along with the others ... I'll post an update as soon as I receive my case.

Wow, those cases are beautiful., I like my phone naked, so I wonder if anyone has felt one on their iPhone. Is it thin and delicate like my naked iPhone or does it feel like a nice salad bowl?

I was specifically asking what options iPhoneGuy ordered :) I'm very aware of what the site has, and am awaiting some possibly exotic woods to be offered before I jump.

So, who's gonna bite the bullet and grab one for real world photos and review -- for the good of the community of course, should your significant other gasp at the price.

I can't decide how I feel about it -- it seems like a case that will either be really good or really bad. And I can't find any measurements or weights on the site.

I'm afraid of how much bulk that would add (since even a thin leather slip seems to double the perceived size of the phone), but it does look rather neat.

Does anyone have the ipod case that could shed some light on how thick they are carving the wood (assuming its similar)?

I plan on buying one. I'm waiting on the option to add a graphic, and the option to mix/match the wood types between the case and dock. Both options should arrive August 17.

I can't see this adding more bulk that my Sena slim pouch - and that's not much.

The expense doesn't bother me as much as it would others. I'm guessing Miniot is buying blocks of furniture-grade wood, and there is time, patience, adjustments, sanding, etc involved. And if the wood splits while it's being shaped, do you start over or sell a cracked case?

seems like unless there is some kind of silicone lining in the inside, if you drop it, the case will just pass the shock onto the iphone, whereas the iskin and incase will absorb a lot of the shock and insulate the phone more

ummmmmm..............huh?

even if the gymnasium floors were wood, do gymnasts do their flips and tumbles directly on it? no

they put mats on top of it to actually do the "absorbing"

Quote from a company that makes gym floors:
"An all-wooden subfloor assembly that provides uniform resiliency, excellent shock absorption, and a high level of energy return. "

Mats are used, yes. But wood does have some insulating properties.

I received mine about a week ago. I got the cherry one. It is beautiful and came well packaged. The only problem I have with it is that the cut out for the ringer silence button is to small, and makes it hard to switch the ringer off without removing the upper part of the case. Like everyone has stated it took a while for it to come I ordered mine back on 8/11 and had to email to find out when it shipped. But the case is very smooth and enhances the beauty of the phone. Worth every cent............:o

It is not very thick at all. It really does not make the phone seem much thicker. And I am not worried about it getting scratched, wood is very durable. I love it except for the ringer switch and the fact that you have to push a little harder on the wood covered buttons (but that is expected).

Oh and thanks I love the wood grain as well. I hope you get a nice one too.

Hi! I would like to ask to the ones that bought an iwood, if they get any kind of feedback from miniot; I mean, I bought mine like 3 days ago and I haven't received anything, not even a confirmation email or something. I even sent them an email, just asking for confirmation and asking about the shipment, and I haven't received any answer.

So, just wanted to know if this the usual way for them; I mean, I know it will take 2-3 weeks to be made, but at least they can reply to my emails.

Thanks,

Peter's good about responding, but is usually a day or 2 behind. My case is in transit, as of 1 week ago today. I hope to see it within the next week.

Cheap piece of wood, and broke the first day I used it.
Not my fault, seeking a refund from Peter at Miniot or a replacement product.

Yes, I emailed Peter through that email address. When I first placed my order, I noticed before I submitted the order, the logo didn't register the placement. So after I placed the order, I immediately emailed him how I wanted my logo placed since the order didn't register it. He acknowledged my email and noted how I wanted my logo placed.

Hello everyone, new guy here.

I just received my walnut iWood today. Ordered it on the 9/28 and it was on my desk (at work) this morning (10/1). Great communication with Miniot, but it seems like you have to initiate that communication.

My pictures are pretty much the same as the ones that were posted earlier in this thread, just a different color. pics are here:

http://flickr.com/photos/meanopause/sets/72157602228270435/

I'll be honest, the case looks slick! The phone fits in nicely, wood grain looks great, even smells good. Although, there are a few things that aren't so slick about the phone.

• I think someone mentioned it earlier in this thread, but the silent/ring toggle is IMPOSSIBLE to use, I'm thinking of making that hole a tad larger. I use that toggle switch all the time so it has to work.

• The magnet type things are too weak, if you grab the phone by its' sides–especially on the bottom half– your iphone and iwood will fall on the ground. I'm looking for solutions that would give me a little more confidence while pulling out the phone, maybe double sided tape on the inside?

• I guess the buttons are kind of hard to press, you have to press them on the edges.

Let me finish by saying that the looks are amazing but it does need some work on the everyday-usability side. Now go buy one!

carman63

Mine arrived today as well, in cherry. Everything said previously, I can agree with. The side buttons are functional, just need to put a little pressure on them. Can't get to the 'silent' button too well. But it looks great, and feels good in the hand.

Overall, I don't regret the purchase at all.

I look forward to seeing pictures of yours. I agree the feel of the case is very nice. I did or do not have the problems with the magnets that the previous post stated. My wood holds together great; you might want to question Peter about that.

Mine looks very similar to the other cherry case previously pictured - just a slightly different grain. I can try to get some pictures later today though.

I don't have the problem with the case sliding apart on its own. I have noticed that the bottom piece over the dock port) holds to the iPhone a bit snugger than the top piece sometimes.

I should have clarified that I agree with 'most' of the comments made :) My buttons do work, just require extra pressure; the silent button is hard, if not impossible, to get to; and overall the case adds minimal girth/weight. I was surprised by how light it was, actually.

The only issue I have is, the cut-out for the dock cable isn't wide enough. [EDIT] The cut-out is fine. I was using an older generation sync cable. The connector on the iPhone sync cable is thinner and fits inside the iWood case perfectly.

Nice pics Carman! thanks for posting.

So, what I'm worried about now is that the magnets don't have enough force and the iphone fall if you're just holding the case by the upper side. what do you think about this? how do you place your hand when holding it? to take off the lower part requieres a lot of force or it's easy; if it's easy , when you take off of your pocket doesn't it lose the lower part, or the iphone and you just take the upper?

thanks for the pics again, really nice

The magnets are plenty strong. You won't have to worry about the case separating when you are holding it by the edges.

When I pull it apart, I rest a finger on the screen and pull the bottom piece off. It takes a bit of force to break the hold of the magnets.

If I don't hold the screen, the top piece seems to want to slide off first. Maybe it's a tolerance thing, maybe it's the way I hold the case. I'm a lefty, for what that's worth :p

No, I can hear it fine. If it does affect the ring volume I can't tell.

You may want to be concerned about the magnetic sliding backing on this. Magnets are not the iphones friend.

My money clip uses large, strong magnets. I've kept my iphone in the same pocket since I've owned it with no ill effects.

Omg, I wooden case?! That's awesome, I never even thought about such a thing for an electronic device. I might have to get one and switch my cases up lol. What's the lead time on something like this? Seems two weeks is the standard eh?

Hey, I noticed you have a G37, got an FX45 here, but I didn't have an option for an iPod mount. I had mine installed post-factory with a 30 pin connector such as yours and a couple of amps, subs and new speakers. How/why does it show "Infiniti" on the iPod? Did the iPod dock come with infiniti controls on the navigational display and steering wheel? If so, damn, I'm jealous lol. Nice pics.

The G37 came standard with the connector and cable. I think the Infiniti logo is sent from the car, unless Apple pre-programmed it somehow.

All functions work via the touch display or steering wheel.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS PRODUCT.

Miniot sent me a badly made excuse for a case, the product was damaged out of the box, i ordered a logo- they got the placement and size of it wrong, the power button did not line up right and ended up dinging my phone, furthermore there are metal rods inthe back which they shoddily cover and of you don't look to make sure they will scratch the back of your phone.

Miniot is a horrible company which refused to take responsibility for the damage there crappy case did to my phone, and refused to try and send me a working one....my suspicion is that all of them are slightly messed- they even admitted to me that the tolerances are still changing.....

GREAT PRODUCT IN THEORY, BUT FAR LESS THAN PERFECT.

I take it you've emailed them? I have. They're apparently sending out a new design to some of us that ordered first, due to some problems (not specified to me).

The 'metal rods' are the magnets, I suspect.

There are magnets that help hold the 2 pieces together. That's the 'metal' he referred to.

You can barely seem them in this picture, on the larger part of the case:

My case took 2 to 2 1/2 weeks IIRC, once it shipped. It was worth the wait.

Peter had said via email that they were doing a slight redesign (reinforcing some areas on the inside of the case, I believe) so your case may have been held up for the new revision.

Oct 18, 2007, 06:51 AM
Hi!

mine has just arrived!! I'll post this evening a little review since I don't have here any camera.

It's beautiful; it has the problems we all know with the buttons, it's really hard to use the sleep button, sounds ones work a little better but not too much. The mute switch is impossible to reach, maybe with very long nails...

The wood is a little different from the one at the miniot web page, darker, but the same kind of wood (they tell it will happen in their homepage; there are no two woods that looks exactly the same).

The most impressive is how well it fits the iphone body; the only thing is not perfect it's the camera hole, not exactly centered on the camera lens, but it doesn't appear in the camera field of view so is not a problem.

The dock is ok, original. You have to plug the cable to the iphone and then set it onto the dock; it's not as easy as apple one; also it is not as wide, don't look too stable, but works. (dont know if someone in the post bought the dock, haven't seen any comment about it). Screen protector looks ok, but I haven't installed it since I already have the power support one.

Referring to the negative comments of "thomasthomas", note that it could be bad luck and that your case arrives like hims, since we don't really know miniot opinion on his case:

- Package was perfect, a small box, by certified mail. Inside this box, perfectly tight a miniot box, really looking like apple's ones, I mean elegant and well done.

- Inside the miniot box, you have a cartoon suite for the wood case in which they advise you not to press the buttons unitl it's over the iphone (the wood would crash, it's just united to the rest of the case by thin wood).

- Inside the iwood case, theres a material for protecting the back of the iphone, I guess from the metal parts of the magnets. Don't know if it will scratch the iphone with time, now it looks fine on one of the magnets, the other one is raised a little over the wood and that material is not completely covering it, so it could scratch the iphone. until now it hasn't scratched it but it's been taken out just a couple of times.

- My logo is perfectly fitted into the case, better than I could ever hoped. It's just perfect; also I must say Peter mailed me to ask me about the logo size and position, and then confirmed me that it would be like I wanted it to.

- Magnets don't look too hard, just make it stay together. I also have the agent18 case and I guess this one works better since it's not as tight to the body of the iphone, you can take it off easily.

I will post pics as soon as I can!

Details about the buttons; sleep button doesn't raise over the rest of the case, so it makes it difficult to press it; volume buttons are hard too, but since are a little over the case, you can press them more easily.

Silence switch is absolutely un-useful , I cannot even make it switch using a stylus. How do you use the mute control iwood users? turn at minimum with the volume buttons? any program?

Oct 19, 2007, 11:53 AM
wow, thanks Bonjavi for the multiple thorough pics. I'm just waiting for mine to come soon!! You guys think since the case fits so snug and perfect, the case in anyway can scratch the casing or chrome bezel when removing the iphone from the case?

If so, I was thinking of getting a BSE cover.

bonjavi
Oct 19, 2007, 02:28 PM
well I'm worried about that too, but I don't know if the invisible shield or the BSE would fit. I just tried to put a power support cristal film on the back, and with that the iwood harldy entered over the iphone, also this way it scratched the powersupport film.

But I guess trying one of the plastic covers is the only way to be sure that it wont be scratched.

iWood fits correctly, even the magnets seems to not touch the iphone, at least not too much, but I guess that if you take it off and on everyday it will end all scratched, same way that would be with any other cover or thing that you use over and over the surface.

Yes, bottom piece also comes off smoothly on my case. The upper one, not so easy, but better than other cases like agent18 as I said. Is just that maybe is not the way to take out the upper case everyday, for using a belkin armband or something like that, don't you think so?

I've only taken the top part of the case off once. That was yesterday, to look for scratches caused by the case (there were none).

Otherwise, I only remove the bottom piece so I can use my Apple dock.

This is probably the only (and for some, major) flaw in the design - you can't access the silence switch without a toothpick or possibly long fingernail. The hole for it is there, but the switch is already recessed, and having to work through an additional layer (the case) makes it difficult, if not impossible. :(

Miniot is/was working on a slight redesign, but I don't think button functionality was being addressed. I think it was more of a structural reinforcement issue.

Hi !

I'm thinking on doing the hole bigger (of the "silencer" swtich) using modelling kit tools (you know for navy wood ships kits) I think they are enough precise to just increase its size a little bit. Unfortunately I have this tools in my holiday house and I don't know when I'll go there to take them... If someone has experience in this kind of modlling kits and wanna try...

Also I noticed a sad problem, I'm getting a little mark on the iphones body, just near to the sleep button; I've just looked at it and its worst than first time I saw it a couple of days ago, so I guess something is not working with my sleep iwood button, it must be pushing over the iphone body

joshysquashy
Oct 22, 2007, 07:19 AM
They should make that hole bigger, and or have a piece of wood to attach to the ringer switch.

these covers seem to make the iphone quite a bit bigger, i imagined it to be something more like this where it replaces the cover:

That's odd. I haven't come across this problem. I do notice if you take the case off and on often, the lining over the magnets leaves a minor black streak where the magnets slide over the back casing. It come off with some water, but nevertheless annoying. I found a solution by just placing some scotch tape over the slide area where the magnets slide. I think the magnets make the lining a tad higher then the rest of the lining. No biggie though.

Maybe you should contact Peter from miniot and tell him your problem.

Bonjavi, what I also noticed from the pics between our (maybe just my eyes), but the silent ringer hole for mine is more off to the left (if you look from the side). Not like having the hole more to the left help or not, the hole is still too deep and useless.

I've been having errors on my signal since a couple of weeks; when I'm gonna make a call it gives me some kind of error, and the singlal is 0. it's been happening a lot this 2 weeks or so, I thought it could be a problem with 1.1.1 and ipsf but it also the moment I started using iwood. I don't remember happening the first days after the upgrade to 1.1.1, so I guess that I should try it with out the iwood for some days to check if it still happens.

It's really strange, on the moment of the call it turns to 0, then it recovers and works... and it has all the power when I make the call..

My original iWood case had an issue where the small piece of wood in the front of the dock broke off. I contacted Miniot about it. Peter aked for pictures, and acknowledged some issues folks were reporting. Bottom line, they added reinforcements on the cases being made in a few weak sports, and Peter shipped me a replacement case - absolutely free, and told me to keep the original.

So for all you doubting Thomas(thomas)es out there, they really stand behind their product. :)

^LOL Crazy glue...

In my opinion this is ridiculous, albeit the fit and finnish of these iWood cases looks outstanding, this has to be about the most ridiculous modification/accessory that I've seen in awhile. What purpose do these really add besides a little bling... surely it will not add protection by cushioning a fall and infact from what I have read, will only add scratches and inconveniences at significant cost. What a worthless product flying in the face of what Apple is all about really. Beautiful but worthless.

Good to hear. I'd highly recommend them on their customer service alone.

And 'elegance' is the word I'd use for the case. Some folks are willing to spend $100 on a leather case, I'd rather go for wood myself :) That's the beauty of individualism.

It looks a lot better than all the leather cases out there, that being said I do like the simple elegant look of all the apple products and have my ipods and iphone covered in InvisibleShield :)

Has anyone ever had any issues with the Iwood case on your Iphone and it going into Auto-Lock ?

Mine is not doing that after the Iwood case, The screen dims but has stopped going into Auto-Lock.

I accidently[sic] dropped my case on my bathroom tile floor. The bottom half of my case shattered into three pieces. There goes my beautiful case. The risk of buying a wooden case.:(

Gosh. I am glad that you are getting a replacement for your broken iWood but you have scared the heck out of me. I too am partial to the Padouk but I always drop my phones - more often than not, on the pavement.

Anyone know anything about wood density? I'm thinking that because of its small, relatively straight woodgrain, that the Mahogany would be better suited for me. At $100+ I would rather it not be felled with a single mighty blow. Then again, I just can't do a dopey rubber case that is going to stick to the inside of my pocket.

Form over function? Yeah, I know, I'm barking up the wrong tree...

These cases are definitely bling over function.

I have noticed that the bottom piece over the dock port) holds to the iPhone a bit snugger than the top piece sometimes.

Key word in above quote is 'sometimes'. Wood moves and warps with differences in humidity. Depending on where you are, the difference between inside and outside summer humidity could wreak havoc on the case. I think you would be best to go with a tight grained wood such as maple or cherry. However as thin as these cases are, I would still be surprised to see one (in use) last longer than a year.

The cherry would darken and get richer over time. A sunbath will speed this process.

Paduck goes from bright red to warm brown over time. Not for me.

A Birds eye maple would be cool and I think inherently stronger yet possibly more prone to warping. The material cost is 50-75% more as well. ( Still only a few dollars based on size)

Although the company seems to be pretty nice about replacments...I still say if you can't afford to have it broken then don't buy it. I certainly can't fault anyone for getting one. They do look sweet. I would love one but unfortunately I'm just not in the right tax bracket

The buttons work fine, I can only just reach the silence switch.
The case is well finished, with no sharp edges, but it hadn't been cleaned very well inside.
My only critism with this case is that the bottom half is tighter than the top, which makes removing the bottom half for putting in a dock aqward.

Can anyone give me miniot's email address?

My case was very loose on my iphone and the pieces kept coming apart, and i was holding the top piece when my iphone slipped out, causing the bottom piece to hit the ground and break. Im wondering if they will send me a replacement case due to poor construction?

Hey there Stoplis, I just created an account here so that I can ask you a few more questions about your knock off Iwood Case.
I just won an ebay auction for a knock off iwood CObra case. It cost me 41$ US which I have yet to pay as I have been a bit weary of going through with the purchase. I mean even if its not a real Miniot iwood case.. I'm only paying 41$ for it as opposed to hundreds. I'm thinking that its still worth it despite the fact that its a knock off.
I would like to know how your case has been holding up since your last post on it?? I gatehr that both pieces attach with the 2 littl magnets??? Does the case stay on snuggly ? Meaning that, nothing falls off or slides off all the time??? Also, have you noticed any interference for the calling/3g/wifi caused by the case of use of magnets to hold the pieces together???
What are your overall thoughts on the knock off to date?? Would you advise that I go ahead with it?? Many thanks !!!
******PS ===> Can someone who reads this please PM Stoplis for me and ask him to read this post I just posted ??? I can't PM him yet as I just signed up and would love to ensure that he reads my post as his comments will help my decision greatly ! Thanks again everybody for lending a hand.
Also if anybody else has purchased a knock off iwoocase, I would love to hear from you and your experience as well as product quality.
Cheers !

the wood looks good but i would prefer to add it as a replacement for the iphone battery cover. No need to make it bulkier.
