i think the time i listened to sandstorm was some five or six years ago. i could recommend you some other songs that were quite good back then:
- Mauro Picotto - Komodo
- Cosmic Gate - Exploration of Space
- ATB - 9PM (Till I Come)
- Ian van Dahl - Castles in the Sky
anyway, I would not classify Sandstorm as Techno. It's some dance/trance mashup.
If you find any chance you would like to check out trance a bit more ... give www.tranceaddict.com a chance and get any Paul van Dyk liveset there to start with.
Enjoy!

Are you talking about Darude????? this is NOT techno..its cheap ass cheesy euro trance rubbish... and as for ATB and Iand Van Dahl (castles in the sky???) dont make me ********* laugh!!!!
Techno, real techno.. you need to look at Dj's like Dave Clarke, Jeff Mills, Richie Hawtin, Sven Vath, Paul Mac, Oliver Ho, Dave Angel, Carl Cox, Deetron, Carl Craig, Anderson noise..to name but a few.
I fear you wont like any of theses guys though, you sound more like a "dj sammy" type to me. cant tell you where to find that kind of "stuff".
please dont insult true techno by associating the likes of pop tastic "dj's" like ATB (joke, one hit wander - as was the other two!!!).

Here is my trance/techno playlist, benassi is one of the best IMO, I too got started listening to trance/techno with sandstorm by darude, if I were you I would check out Paul Van Dyk, DJ Tiesto, Benny Benassi, and Paul Oakenfold. Then explore some of the other artists in that screenshot.

Yup, DJ Tiesto etc. is not techno, it's trance and house. I have to say that techno is great albeit I don't generally listen to it as I don't know where to look or find techno music. I do love the music in Need For Speed: Porsche Unleashed/2000.

Easy there ILOVEtechno, we're not all purists like you, but damn, I have to say, with that name, this is truly your thread. ;)
As far as "techno" is concerned, there is quite a bit of variety out there. Typically when people new to the genre toss around the "techno" bomb, they actually mean electronica. Electronic music encompasses a wide range of subgenres including but not limited to:
Ambient Electronic
Drum 'n Bass
Trance
House
Lo-Fi
Dance
Trip-Hop
New Age
IDM
Industrial
Avant-garde
and....
Techno
Personally, I like to snoop around the "indie" electronic scene, which given the relative newness of the genre, is still the driving force behind the music. The internet is an excellent forum for finding new, and more importantly free music.
Here's some decent artists to check out online:
Lasse Gjertsen (http://www11.nrk.no/urort/user/?id=36781) - the man of Hyperactive (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9698TqtY4A) [YouTube] and Amature (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzqumbhfxRo) [YouTube] fame.
Keaton (http://www.keaton-world.com/music.html) - whose remixes pepper YTMND.com.
The Cynic Project (http://www.tcpmusic.com/e107/page.php?1)
I've also attached a selection of professional Electronic music to check out.

To the people who know their stuff: Could someone of you please give a clear definition and a few examples if possible on what Techno really is?
I like Downtempo, Electronica, Trip Hop, Big Beat, Drum n Bass and Glitch. Most people, after asking me for my musical preferences, respond "So basically, Techno, right?".
I slap them.

Most of these artists are not producing techno, but more like different varieties of house, electronica and trance.

Sandstorm is trance not techno. Techno is usually about 160bpm and a bit mental.
If you like sandstorm check out Mauro Picotto. His 'green' album is great and the track 'Taub' is great. His stuff is a little 'darker' than Sandstorm but well worth a listen. 'Lizard' is another classic Picotto track.
Taub (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=44516626&s=143441&i=44516587)
Lizard (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=208833383&s=143441&i=208834863)
Once they get going they are great. iTunes has clipped them at slow parts.
If Picotto is too dark for you try looking up some of the Gatecrasher stuff. Its massive over here in the UK.

I know, its not smart to step into this argument, but on the off chance that you're not just trolling, I'd just like to say that there are many artists who weave electronic music as intricate as "old timey" classical music.
For example, much of the "techno" scene can has sonic parallels that can be heard very well in Glass-style minimalism (which is very thoughtful music). !

What the hell is a real instrument anyway? A saucepan and a wooden spoon is an instrument if you use it in that way...

Reeeeeeeeeallly?!?
And what is the basis of nearly all electronic music? There is a common root...lets see if you can Google up some newfound knowledge for yourself.
Start with the history of 4/4 timing and the modern waltz. That should be enough of a clue for you.

Electronic music is the music producer unhindered. Most music today is processed and sculpted by a producer. If your a band you hire a producer to take the song you wrote and make sound complete. Which includes getiing it mastered and expanded to take hold of a audio tracks full range. While idiots like you file all techno as "crappy dance" real musicians know that techno and electronic music is now a proper part of all music.
look at Trent Reznor's NIN. Trent writes for every instrument he records mosts of the instruments and then produces the music himself using mostly electronic means. Year Zero is an amazing peice of produced music. It has some astoudingly complicated songs that could never been done on real instruments or mastered otherwise. On;y morons rule out agenre because teh 2 songs they heard weren't the same thing as they like.

There are lots of great sites where you can listen to mixes. My personal favorite is www.protonradio.com , which is more House oriented, but will provide a good window into electronic music.
Shameless plug: I am part of a weekly electronic music oriented show, available to stream in my signature. We go all over the place in terms of styles (which is why we love radio in addition to playing live. it is such a different environment, and it is fun to get to change direction all the time, but not lose the momentum of a room), but hopefully you find it interesting.
If you know of labels you like, hunt them down online, and you can usually find mixes on their sites. There is an almost endless supply of EDM mixes on the internet.

I buy my electronica exclusively from the New Castle UK label Global Underground (http://www.globalunderground.co.uk/). They offer their 3 and 4 CD compilations on iTunes for only $9.99 per set. Fantastic value. I buy everything they publish. Very reliable source of all things electronica.
