MacRumors

http://www.macrumors.com/images/macrumorsthreadlogo.gif (http://www.macrumors.com)
As the September 5th event approaches, the rumors continue to build, with last minute claims and "leaks". One popular theme is a claim of an outline of the keynote speech. This has been claimed (http://www.macrumors.com/2007/06/11/keynote-transcript/) before a number of times, and has always been fake.
We've published the latest one for interest only, and don't believe it to be true. The outline is published in the discussion thread for this story.
September 5th
Announcement of iPhone ringtones sold on iTunes Store, for $0.49 each.
Announcement of iPhone games. At the time of the announcement, only Texas Hold'em will be ready, while Apple is working closes with EA to port the iPod games onto the iPhone.
Announcement of iTunes MobiStore, a "lite" version of the iTunes Store, accessible on the iPhone. It appears as an icon on the iPhone's main screen along with the other icons.
Announcement of the iPhone "Radio" apllication. Apple teamed up with Live365.com for this. You will be able to listen to any Live365.com internet radio stream. A button to buy a specific song that you hear will also be included. The button is programmed to only appear when a song plays that is available on the iTunes MobiStore.
Next up is new iPod announcements:
iPod - 3.5 inch widescreen
touchscreen interface, with operating system as previously seen in interface videos leaked on MacRumors. CoverFlow is included.
Built-in Wi-fi allowing access to iTunes MobiStore.
The "Radio" application is included.
Encasing is aluminum, same as iPod nano. (Silver Aluminum and Black Aluminum are the only colors)
There is a black rim around the encasing
There is a button below the screen. It is the same shape as the iPhone button, except it is a little smaller. This is the only button on the unit (besides the usual Hold slider).
30GB $300, 80GB $400.
iPod deca
Operating system as previously seen in interface videos leaked on MacRumors. CoverFlow is included.
The images purported by GearLive to be the new iPod nano are actually images of the iPod deca.
Built-in Wi-fi allowing access to iTunes MobiStore.
The "Radio" application is included.
Encasing is aluminum, same as iPod nano. (Color scheme reported by 9to5Mac.com is correct)
You will be able to watch videos, just like the regular iPod.
Only available in 10GB format, $250.
iPod nano
Same as previous generation, only difference is the new Operating system, as stated above.
Same colors as previous generations.
Price drop.
NEW 1GB $79, 2GB $119, 4GB $175, No 8GB.
iPod Shuffle is discontinued.
One More Thing
Beatles albums will now be on iTunes. Paul McCartney comes out in a surprise appearance and sings "Hey Jude".
The end.

I have four reasons why I think this is fake:
1. I have seen more people than ever wearing their 2g Shuffle. It has been doing better than ever.
2. One operating system controlled by touch or wheel? I don't think so...
3. The iPod deca in 10gb flash? No. It doubles in gigabytes starting at one. 1gb, 2gb, 4gb, 8gb, 16gb, etc.
4. Apple wouldnt bring the nano down to its previous capacities. But price drops do sound like a good idea.
I was hoping to make a number five saying that Paul McCartney is touring somewhere else, but he's not.

Why would Paul McCartney only play one song? All other guest artists, Alicia Keyes, Sarah Mclaughlin, US, and most notably John Mayer all played more than one song. I could see Hey Jude in addition to his latest hit Dance Tonight as that's a pretty uptempo song, also it promotes his new album even more.
But yes that "outline" kinda does blow. It just tells us what we all want/rumor sites have reported.

One of the only good guesses in this "outline" is Paul McCartney being there. He admitted in a recent New Yorker interview that he was supposed to play at the MacWorld 07 Keynote, but pulled out due to family commitments. It's not unreasonable to think that he'll be rescheduled for another Apple event.

2 + 8 = 10
And they call it 'MiniStore' already.
Not that I think this is real; although it is much better than the last 'outline'.

I was just listening to Tuesday's Daily Telegraph Podcast (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/portal/main.jhtml?xml=/portal/exclusions/podcast/podcastportal.xml) and they talk about the new iPod as if it were already announced! Strange. Not much detail that we don't know already - widescreen, touchscreen, blah, blah.

If it was Deci, it would make more sense, but Deca would imply that it's really big compared to the full-sized iPod.

These "outlines" are always ridiculously over-the-top
iPod 6G and new nanos, that's all I'm aiming for, anything else is a bonus, if you start hoping for inbuilt digital radio, ringtones (although that is possibly true), wifi, a mobile store, touchscreen (again possibly true) and all the other crap that gets made up your bound to get disappointed, keep it simple and your bound to be surprised on the actual event :)
Apple won't be updating any of their macs, they had that chance when they updated the iMacs.

Indeed. I love the shuffle! (yes, I have a real ipod as well). But when I'm in the garden and want nothing more than a play button to hear music. Or when I know I'm going to walk home from somewhere, keep the small low profile shuffle in my pocket.
They would be fools to get rid of something that small and portable. I think too many folks here have video on the brain, and forget some of us are in it for the music and have no real interest in watching video on any small device...

You know, the iPod Minis were more popular than ever when they were discontinued. I don't disagree with your overall assessment, I just like to point out that sometimes Apple does things that don't make any freakin' sense to us...

The iPod shuffle to be discontinued? You have got to be kidding me.
I can't believe this even made it to page 2. There isn't even mention of marketshare or business recaps for the iTunes/iPod segment. And a bunch of other crap that doesn't follow suit with Apple's apparent history, etc. (I.E. it wouldn't make sense to consumers who compare "logical" guesses with Apple's past and perceived future).

You know, the iPod Minis were more popular than ever when they were discontinued. I don't disagree with your overall assessment, I just like to point out that sometimes Apple does things that don't make any freakin' sense to us...
Yeah-- in that case they discontinued it while it was still going pretty strong rather than waiting for it to die down. But it should be noted that they discontinued it and immediate replaced it with the Nano-- which, while 1G nanos weren't colorful or aluminum like the mini or current gen. nano, they were a direct replacement nonetheless (so it's not like discontinuing the mini made no sense). I think it'd be weird if they discontinued the shuffle form factor without something to replace it (not just a 1gig nano, unless the nano is coming down in size (form factor) significantly and being called something else).
I think they could easily keep selling the current generation shuffle. The shuffle rumor I think could be possible is a product red version. Otherwise it's a great product-- looks good, great form factor, easy to wear... (easy to lose...) Change up the colors if you want and call it good.

Sep 4, 2007, 12:53 PM
While I would be very disappointed if they discontinued the shuffle, I guess it doesn't matter too much since I already have one. And since it went through the washing machine with no ill effect, I'm convinced it will last forever. :-)
I think the shuffle is underrated, it's an excellent device, it's all the iPod I need most of the time.
That being said, I'd like to get a Nano as well, hopefully in orange... ?
Steve? Orange Nano Fun Pod? Anyone?

That would be an amazingly disappointing announcement line up.

Sep 4, 2007, 01:17 PM
I call this fake, for a few reasons...
Deca? There is no way in hell that Apple would call a model the iPod deca. It sounds lame and stupid. Almost something that Microsoft would do...the Zune deca!
There is no way that they will discontinue the shuffle. It remains one of the top sellers because of the price. If that were to occur, there would be no cheap, on-the-fly iPod anymore.
Apple isn't going to release an iPod with everything but the phone aspect of the iPhone this soon. If there was worry about Apple killing iPod sales with the iPhone, then there should be even greater worry of killing the iPhone sales with an iPod that is an iPhone with Safari, e-mail, and phone. I would drop 300 for an iPod then 500 for an iPhone and I know many other people would, too.

If one throws out enough ideas out there, some are bound to be correct. I really like how MacRumors has rated this information as unreliable.
My guesses
Squushed iPod Nano, unannounced discontinuetion of Shuffle (see Apple Store afterwords)
New iPod interface and new iPod form factor across all "regular" iPods.
Old iPods to be sold at discount until stock is gone.
Beetles added to catalog, would not be suprised if the "Hey Jude" thing happend.
On the far side
Wi-fi integration of new iPods with ability to control AppleTV and remote applications.
Has anybody noticed that Apple is really not hyping the AppleTV. It's not listed as an accessory or on Apple's hardware page, but is at the bottom of the iPod page. This just seems odd, so perhaps the AppleTV will be combined with the mini or have added functionality.
It is also possible that Jobs reads the Beetles last press release and then reads a new one stating simply that the entire Beetles will be available on iTunes exclusively for 3 months. Then some Beetle song with out any live presence.
Lastly, There will be no iPod named "deca". It isn't a code name and Apple marketing department wouldn't attach a name to the size of the memory.

Yes, the Shuffle is very versatile, but just because you CAN clip it on your fly, doesn't mean you should!

The names and details are probably fake but I think it's a pretty good guess of some of the things that will be discussed tomorrow.
Makes perfect sense to add a mobile iTunes store now that Nokia has announced theirs.
Games for iPhone would be a great addition and can't imagine hard to do?
New iPod will most likely have WiFi for access to mobile iTunes store, streaming radio, streaming music possibilities. I highly doubt as people have said that the new iPod will be a phone-less iPhone since that would definitely cannibalize iPhone sales which is Apple's biggest moneymaker (hardware+AT&T contract profit)...making people pay $600 to get that touchscreen experience is the best way to keep iPhone sales healthy. Many people would happily get a touchscreen iPod and forgo an iPhone if they could.
Time will tell...all I want is for a new software update for the iPhone to fix these really annoying Safari crashes, memory leaks and general bugs more than anything.

I don't believe this outline although I wouldnt mind some of the stuff in it coming true. I do hope there will be an announcement for iPhone other than just ringtones.
As far as the shuffle being discontinued, I wouldn't care. It would only make sense to eliminate shuffle if the Nano was given a price drop to make it close to the same price as the current shuffle.
I look forward to seeing what actually happens tomorrow morning.

yeah its probably fake. I really dont see the shuffle going anywhereYeah, the shuffle is one of the biggest selling lines isn't it?
Also, even in the category of fake Keynotes, everyone knows that they have a certain structure.
They always start with the financial's and a couple of graphs, (which this one doesn't), and while they sometimes end with live music, it's often a bit awkward for the attendees and many shuffle out the second Steve stops talking.
No way they would chose the aging, hoarse, Paul McCartney singing "na-na-na-naaa" for fifteen minutes as a show closer. :)

Blatantly a fake. Apple eventually see the iPhone becoming the main iPod of the range, therefore they will NOT release an iPod touch that looks exactly like the iphone without the phone. Looking forward to this and hopefully to hear the iPhone mK2 will be shipping worldwide immediately;)
