View Full Version : The fastest speed you have driven at?

Well, my friend has the Diablo that I hit 215 in and the top speed of those is just barely 220, so there must be mods that he did to get that up to those speeds. Then definitely don't come stock being able to do those speeds. As far as that Corvette, well damn. I love Corvettes. I remember last year reading a Road and Track article on how they got permission from the Navy and raced a fighter jet in 0-60 and 1/4 miles with a twin turbo modded Corvette C5 and they ended up out-speeding the jet in a few runs.

Does anyone remember the game for the Mac back in about 1993 called 'Corvette'? In it you could drive the Sledgehammer in San Francisco. At 250MPH you could make some serious jumps.

Sadly, I didn't become a switcher until 1999, so I didn't get the chance to play that game.

Yeah, your Z does look really nice. It's a shame seeing so many on the road that are all beat to hell. I like the paint design on the wheels you have, it gives the car a nice stately appearance.

I need flares, but it will make the car look retarded... Should have went with a smaller wheel. Hopefully my body kit i have for it will make it look better.
But thanks for the compliments. She is my baby and the reason me and my last g/f broke up. Next time i get access to a scanner ill scan some pics of the whole restoration process that i did. Also what it was (a real s*itbox) before i restored it.

I almost lost my girlfriend to my car, too. She would get really jealous that I might love my car more than her at times. Sometimes I suspect Veronica of being jealous of m girlfriend, though, too...I swear, it's some sort of female oriented conspiracy. Either my girlfriend gets jealous and doesn't want to hang out or my car gets jealous and doesn't want to drive right...can I ever win!

I've driven a M2A2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle around 40 miles per hour. They can go upto 60 but they have a governor. It's removed when we get deployed.
Nothing like 35 tons of rolling armor to make you feel absolutely invincible. The 25mm cannon and TOW missle launcher doesn't hurt either.:D

That's all fine and dandy until someone hits all that aluminum armor with a missile and the aluminum starts to burn and kills everyone inside.
Even better yet is a depleted uranium round and since it doesn't have reactive armor it's completely vulnerable. Nah I think I'll stick the Abrams.

I did 125+ on several occassions in my 78 Z28 CAM, but yes it was just slightly (tehe) modified. Any faster, and I'd want to be on a closed track - it just becomes a blur at this speed. AHHH..adrenaline.

Top Speed Is only 1 Rush. How about somewhere between 6500 and 8000 horsepower (500 cu in alum TFX Top Fuel Engine) Uses close to 2 gals of 90% nitro fuel every 1 second at full open throttle.
328 MPH **** In 4.74 Seconds **** 1/4 mile pomona, ca
Nothing Compares to that rush, (except feeling the shute open and the car starting to slow down)

perhaps you'd like to try and drive a car with a standard transition. you can't even turn it on without pressing the clutch in.
try and drive it "just pressing the gas." you won't get up to 176 mph-you've got to learn to shift, first.
i'm curious, though--what's so different and more interesting about crotch rockets?

Ok being a car guy I was interested in this thread, each page I got through reading meant there was one more to read!
Anyway for my old '85 CRX 180km/h on the track... put yokohama slicks on them and they stick to the road like it's got static cling.
On my '03 Matrix (XRS)... I recently had a run in with a New York State Trooper a few weeks ago... I swear I wasn't going as fast as he said I was, but he was freaking out. He said he had to do 120MPH to catchup. But I don't know if I should believe his story, because even if I was going as fast as he thinks, he would have been closing the gap on me by a quarter mile every 20 seconds. Sigh, now I'm not sure what's going to happen with that. :(
Honestly I haven't streched out the 6th gear, but I think I had it up to about 160km/h on some back roads at my parents place. Mind you at 4000rpm in sixth gear, your doing about 140km/h... with a red line starting at 8000rpm, that's a lot of play room.
I definately want to modify the timing of the varible lift engine. It seems that they set the lift so it would feel more like a 'turbo boost', but I bet if you set it around 5500rpm instead of 6500 rpm you'd get a much smoother power curve. I could also put another $10,000 in that car easy...but I'd rather get a sponsor to do it!

How about applying the front brake at 60mph? Crap on the road like gravel. Smaller profile - more diffficult to be seen. Or even stopping without putting a foot down.
Shadow, a car itself may be able to cause more damage than a motorcycle, but the rider of a motorcycle is far more in harm's way than one in a car, ergo the need for a helmet - and constantly on the lookout for the above items.

Does 212mph in a Lamborghini Diablio at Need For Speed count? :p
105mph in a Peugeot 106. Doesn't feel safe is a care that size!
Regularly 70-75mph on back country roads barely as wide as two cars. I just go as fast as the car can take me
Most fun is driving down mountain roads, but unfortunately I have to ease off speed half way down due to underpowered brakes (well to be truthfull, the car wasn't designed to be going that fast on high grade mountain roads). Also fun is doing 50+mph on a snowy mountain road (driving up-hill) overtaking the slower cars, which is ok with adequate tires and if the snow is "fresh" and compacted.

The biggest difference between a motorcycle and a car is the fact that a motorcycle leans into a corner the way you should and a car tends to lean out.
Motorcycles are liberating in that you are out in the open and without a box around you. Also doing anything over 120MPH on a motorcycle seems like 200MPH+ in a car. It's just a completely different experience. When you're riding a bike you are part of the bike and every bit of your body has something to do with the bike. When you are driving you're more detached you still use all your senses but you're body doesn't really have any input into what goes on.
Coming from someone that has been riding bikes for 19 years and has over 300,000 miles on the road on bikes I will admit they are more dangerous. Though a well educated, experienced, rider is both safer on a bike than average and a car even though they may travel at higher speeds. The point is good motorcyclists make good drivers. The opposite is not always true.
I love riding and I love driving also but they are a different experience and they both have there moments. I for one believe that one should never ever though a leg over a motorcycle unless you are of sound body and mind. Cars on the other hand are more forgiving on the sound body part. Also motorcycles are a convenience cars for the most part are not. That simple difference makes a big difference on the riders emotions while riding.

About 120-125 mph in a rented golden Cadillac, going from San Francisco to Reno. My friends in the car were freaking out, but it was all in good fun, and we didn't get pulled over.
I used to drive down to LA from San Francisco on I-5 every weekend at a pretty constant 100-105 mph. They once chased me with an airplane, but didn't get me as I saw them first and slowed down to 69 (70's the speed limit).
Now that I have a child, I don't go faster than 85.

That reminds me of this past March when my wife's Corolla S was stolen. I search through all the worst neighborhoods in Lexington for about a week until I found it one afternoon. My wife called 911, but the cops were not being helpful at all. I approached the losers who had my car, but they just locked the door and took off, bumping my body in the process. Being a Corolla "S", it LOOKS fast. They didn't know what to think a moment later when I had returned to my little Echo and was right on their tail only two blocks down the street! They just couldn't shake me. That was the first (and only) time I had ever squealed the tires in my Echo. They finally bailed in an alley. I almost caught the driver on foot, but being a fat white boy in this part of town I started having scenes from Blackhawk Down go through my head (I know, that was nuts, the whole neighborhood wasn't really going to shoot at me, but adrenaline, fear, excitement, and anger can hamper one's judgement) , so I stopped and let him get away. It was a great Sunday afternoon, though!

London to Newcastle and back, circa 1986 so pre-Gatso (speed cameras), company-owned 2.8i Granada (the proper 'big Cortina' shape), 120mph the whole way.
It had an early, dreadful 'computer'. One useless digital 'clock' gave a fuel economy figure. If you floored it right, you could get a reading of 1.9 mpg.

Fastest as a driver was 135mph returning from holiday in France and racing for a boat. Although this was motorway driving so not really exciting fast.
Most fun was probably half that speed on twisty narrow roads in various cars I didn't own. My old boss had a huge collection of cars including a Lancia Delta HF, Porsche 944 S2 Turbo and a Ferrari F40 never got to drive the F40 myself.
Maddest was trying to make a flight (again at the end of a holiday) in a rented Fiat Punto on the way to Gatwick just over 100mph through traffic on the motorway for over an hour. Missed the flight by about 3min. after parking at the right terminal running to the other terminal by mistake and then having to run back!

I got 180 on a smart roadster, it was nice beacuse this car feels a lot safer than the Chevy. i spined on a Dodge intrepid at 160, drove a gokart at 110 or more. I love cars

I was a passenger in a..Monte Carlo, I think?.. that did 140mph+ in 1988.
I took my '93 Mazda MX-6 up to a bit over 120mph in the mid '90s.
Since then, I've rarely topped 85.

When I worked for Chrysler a few years back we were treated with the opportunity to drive a Viper on their test track. I hit around 190mph on the straight away, all I can say is wow. The thing had 500 horsepower/500 cubic inches/500 ft. lbs. of tourqe. Way over the top.

In my old car, I only ever got to about 90. It was kinda scary to even do that. It was an '82 Volkswagen Rabbit (diesel). Loud as hell at that speed, but that car didn't have a tach, which is why I was afraid to go much faster.
In my current car, an '89 Saab 900 Turbo, I've hit somewhere around 115, quite often. Around where I live there are entire mile stretches with nowhere for cops to hide and no intersecting streets. Super fun.

Got my old '90 Toyota Tercel up to 112 downhill with a tailwind one day. At that speed, I was more worried about the tires spontaneously exploding than anything else.
I drove a '93 Lumina for a while, but it was limited to 108.
Now I'm in a '04 Mazda 3 S. Turns out it's limted to 118 (by experiment). Sad, but I rarely get up that high anyway. She's got good power all the way up past triple digits, though, and that counts for more with me. Feels solid too, not at all like the Lumina or the Tercel. :D

110mph in my first car, a 1994 Toyota Pickup 4 banger with a manual. Took a while to get there, but it did it. Can you say wind noise? :p
I buried the speedo at 120mph in my 1999 Nissan Altima last summer while I was I was following a guy on a crotch rocket. After a minute or so at 120, the biker pulled away strongly, I'd estimate he got up to 135-140+. Too bad the Altima is electronically governed to 120, since at that speed it still has about 2k RPMs left. Maybe that's for the best... :D

So now I know who all those people I saw were! All the people posting in this thread!
^ About a year ago, we were driving in heavy traffic, at about 85mph, and 4 (count 'em — 4) heavily modified silver Porsche Carreras drove by at about 150 mph...weaving from one side of the road to the other, often across 4 lanes in one pass to avoid the traffic. They were in and out in about 3 seconds. My other experience at driving *around* other nice cars was actually this past summer, when I was the passenger in a Mitsubish Monter (big clunky SUV) doing about 60 mph. A Viper with its top down sidled up in the lane next to us, and I quickly wrote "Wanna Race?" on a piece of paper and held it up to the window. The Viper driver stuck out his tongue and dropped back out of sight around a slow bend. About 10 minutes later the Viper roared past us at what had to have been almost three times our speed.
Damn I want a fast car. :o

Has anyone considered speedometer error of margin? At high enough speeds, speedos have been known to be inaccurate by as much as 5-10 mph. Something to take into account.
Which is what I did. 154 mph on the speedometer, GPS verified on roads outside Sacramento. 96 Mustang Cobra.
All efforts ended when I got a speeding ticket for going 101 on highway 101 outside Santa Barbara. My next project is the 210 freeway :D

I hit the limiter on a 330ci sport last year at 155mph on a level straight.
Fastest ever was a 911 turbo at 168mph, it's like your flying.
Too bad my own cars a Civic and a late model Toyota pickup topped out at 128 and 110 respectively.
The fastest car I ever owned was a '95 MX6, with the comp and limiter retuned, squeezed out 134mph. They are limited stock to 119mph.
I DO NOT SUGGEST NEWBIE OR MILDLY TALENTED DRIVERS TO EVER REACH THESE SPEEDS. DRIVING COURSES AND LOTS OF EXPERIENCE. EVEN THEN IT'S VERY UNSAFE!

Raced a Megane dontcha know! Skidded off at the end, was lucky to make the round-about (took it about 50, didn't stop in time to even look to the right as I turned to the left, so I was lucky nothing was coming).
Won't be doing that again - not cool, folks! Still had my 'R' plates up too! Come to think of it, still do

Ah, the joys of being a mechanic at a supercar garage.
Well, lets see:
Twin Turbo Callaway Vette:
235 mph give or take, the speedo stopped well short of that! This was on a closed track btw! Twin turbos on a lt1 are some serious ****!
BTW, I still preferred the feel of the somewhat slower, but more refined ZR1
Supercharged Dodge Viper GTS:
195 = trust me, i would not want to go faster in a viper! But it got there VERY fast! This is the only supercharger I have ever installed on a viper, I have done a number of C5 vettes, and they run nice with it, but the viper is an absolute beast!
Shelby Series 1
Junk - 178 and i was all done thing felt like it was going to rattle apart... I see why they didnt make or sell many
We don't see much in the way of porsche material, but we have a carrera GT on the sales floor, but it has not needed to be in the garage yet... DARN :P
We have a number of ferrari's, but they never interested me much (plus we have a dedicated ferrari tech, so I don't drive them much either)
I just get the "miscellaneous" junk :P

I know, I know, we've all done it. Still, it's kinda frightening to read these posts, knowing that pretty much every one of them refers to driving on public roads - yes, perhaps late at night, but public roads nonetheless.
My suggestion? (not that you asked or anything....) Join a club - get to a track. Learn to drive. No, that does not mean learning how much the fine is for parking too close to a stop sign (which is pretty much all you learn in American driver education classes....); just you, your car, and an instructor to actually TEACH you the physics of driving fast. (It's vastly different than getting on a straight stretch of road and planting your foot to the floor....) There is nothing like getting the line JUST RIGHT. I've only done it a few times (in my '88 Carerra Targa) and it's absolutely the most fun I've ever had behind the wheel.
Well, no, actually the most fun I had behind the wheel had nothing to do with speed (insert your own joke here....) - but that's probably another thread topic in the making......
So, for the record:
'88 Carerra Targa - 120+? (you look at the tach and oil gauge, not speedo)
'85 MR-2 - 110 (um, after a party. Stupid, stupid, stupid....)
'89 944S2 - 95 (current ride; I haven't been to the track yet with this one...)
'73 914 1.7 - 85 (felt way faster)
and for my one trip on the autobahn.....
about 60MPH (whatever that is in KPH) in a fully loaded equipment truck...
Also - time to put in a plug for AUTOCROSSING! Find a local autox, pay your fee, and DRIVE YOUR CAR! (The Northern New Jersey region of the Porsche Club of America has a pretty great program, run by some pretty great people. Try pca.org/nnj for starters. You don't need to have a Porsche, either - you can run your '74 Super Beetle if it will pass the brief tech inspection.....) You won't go all that fast (I think the fastest cars hit about 80 - in 2nd gear! - in the parking lot of the Meadowlands....) (yes, the parking lot of the Meadowlands...) but it's safe, easy to try but difficult to master, and way too much fun.
See ya on the road. Or maybe at the track. Or at an autocross. As the PCA folks like to say as you're entering the track:
Keep the shiny side up!

Funny story:
I wanted to surprise my grandma for her birthday so I rented a car to get to her place so she didn't have to pick me up from the train station. I took the cheapest car at Sixt (Opel Corsa), but they were out of stock at the time I was supposed to pick it up. So they gave me an upgrade. A Mercedes SLK Kompressor. And on the german autobahn I hit the car's limit at 240 km/h (149 mph).

Somewhere between 100-105 MPH in my 1990 Toyota Truck (the gauge only went to 110 MPH). I was driving on the interstate in the middle of nowhere southern Utah on my way to California. The truck started shaking after a few seconds so I quickly decelerated to a more reasonable speed (probably 80-85MPH).
Edit: Normally, these days I don't drive over 70-75 MPH. It's all about trying to still get efficient gas mileage. :)

I've done 100 a couple of times. Basically to avoid getting smushed between two semi's or to avoid getting hammered by a full-sized Dodge Ram truck. I usually keep it under 80 (in 65-70 MPH Zones), and between 65-70 in 55 MPH Zones (Except on I-285 in Atlanta, which, if you've driven it, you know you've got to do more to keep from beeing run over by everyone else, including the cops ;) ).
I'd really like to take my car to the track (or the airstrip, empty of course) and see if I can get it up to 130 at least, if not 160 (the max on the speedometer.) It's a 1.8T Passat, so I'm not sure how high it will actually go (but i can do 65 in 2nd gear-not for too long, though).

I'm form Germany, grew up there but live now in the US. Back home it's normal to exceed speeds of 200 Km/h quite often given you have a car that can go that fast or faster.
MK1 VW Golf GTI 215Km/h at top speed (takes a little while to get there)
MK2 VW Golf GTI 220Km/h at top speed (takes a little while to get there)
MK4 VW Golf GTI 25th an. edition 220+ at top speed
..and now my favorites
Audi A6 2.8L 30V 250+ Km/h
Audi RS6 4.2L Biturbo 280+ Km/h
..my least favorite
Opel Calibra (spelling)220 Km/h
I live now in the US and it's a little hard to exceed speeds over 70-90mph. ...but this one time I took my (then stock) Audi TT 225 Coupe out to about 130mph. empty roads nowhere to see for miles far far away from the city.

I think you're just projecting your grief onto others. This might sound insensitive, but just because one person, in a specific circumstance, had an accident, doesn't mean that other people, in different circumstances are acting as dangerously. And yes, speed limits are made for a reason, so that those on the left side of the bell curve won't kill themselves and others.
That said, I've posted in this thread earlier, but I have since made it my 2006 New Years Resolution to not get traffic tickets. Because of that, I don't speed, and I wear my seat belt, etc. I guess I owe that wake-up call to a police officer who caught me going almost 3X the speed limit, but gave me a break.
Not that I'm minimising that offense, but just to put it into perspective, I was sober, it was 2am on a week night, with no traffic for a kilometer in any direction, with dry roads, so I wasn't endangering anyone else. Well, besides my passenger.

Dangerous driving doesn't come down to outright speed but rather inappropriate speed IMO.
Take my trip up to the Northern Territory as an example. These are long straight roads with nothing around. I felt that at the time I was on these roads, it was safe to do 200km/h plus compared with doing 40km/h past a school at 9:00AM. It all comes down to what's appropriate. :)

This discussion reminds me of a quote out of the book, "Sled Driver."
In his book, Sled Driver, SR-71 Blackbird, pilot Brian Shul writes:
"I'll always remember a certain radio exchange that occurred one day as Walt (my back seater) and I were screaming across Southern California 13 miles high. We were monitoring various radio transmissions from other aircraft as we entered Los Angeles airspace. Though they didn't really control us, they did monitor our movement across their scope. I heard a Cessna ask for a readout of its ground speed."
"90 knots" Center replied. "Moments later, a Twin Beech required the same."
"120 knots," Center answered. We weren't the only ones proud of our ground speed that day as almost instantly an F-18 smugly transmitted,
'Ah, Center, Dusty 52 requests ground speed readout.'
There was a slight pause, then the response, "525 knots on the ground, Dusty."
"Another silent pause. As I was thinking to myself how ripe a situation this was, I heard a familiar click of a radio transmission coming from my back seater. It was at that precise moment I realized Walt and I had become a real crew, for we were both thinking in unison."
"Center, Aspen 20, you got a ground speed readout for us?"
There was a longer than normal pause ..
"Aspen, I show 1,742 knots" No further inquiries were heard on that frequency.

From the book Jonathan Livingston Seagull:
You will begin to touch heaven, Jonathan, in the moment that you
touch perfect speed. And that isn't flying a thousand miles an hour, or a million, or flying at the speed of light. Because any number is a limit, and perfection doesn't have limits. Perfect speed, my son, is being there.
I love old motorcycles and my old BMW R26 goes 70mph maximum. I don't need more, it is just perfect how it is. I drove many different cars in my life (of course I didn't own them all) and with some I was going very very fast... but who cares? I find driving more than 125mph for a longer period of time (and that only when the road is almost clear of other traffic) strenous and dangerous, it isn't worth it... So what is the point of bragging about the top speed somebody was going already in his life? That he was closer to death? That he was so fortunate to drive a Ferrari or a Lamborghini? Big deal...
Again:
... any number is a limit, and perfection doesn't have limits. Perfect speed, my son, is being there.

In a car, about 120MPH. This was in a rented Mustang convertible. ;)
On a bike, just over 135MPH, in Hawaii riding my grandfather's Yamaha V-Max 1200. I admit to not wearing a helmet at the time. The fact that there aren't helmet laws in Hawaii makes it difficult to want to put one on (especially considering the heat at times). :)

• 195mph on the A9 between Inverness & Perth, Scotland, UK
• 170mph on the 101 just south of Santa Barbara, CA, USA
• 210mph+ driving south to Alice Springs from Darwin, North Territory, Oz
• 190mph on the M25 orbital, M1, and M6, on a marathon drive from Reading to get to work on time in Stirling, Scotland, after a U2 gig on a sunday night...
the two UK ones were on empty roads (A9 clears during the middle of the day, M25 quiet at 2.20am!). the 101 wasn't busy but when you've got a 600bhp Mustang from your uncle you HAVE to drive it fast. and in Oz, well, it's illegal not to try getting to the top speed when you have a road 1000+ miles long, straight, perfect tarmac, no other cars on the road!
i've not done any speeding for 10 months now, just because i think i've worked it out of my system!

122 in stock 92" Honda Civic driving home at around 1:30AM from a concert. My friend was alseep and never knew it. I sustained the speed for around 5 minutes then slowed it back down to 105.
I did a sharp U-turn in a Chevy Suburban at 35mph. My friend's dad had gotten the sports suspension which is the only thing that kept it from flipping. No one witnessed it but me and my friends were sure we went on two wheels.
I regularly drive around 90-100 mph to and from work in the civic and i raced a kid in a manual focus zx-4 and beat him because I went into an exit lane and slid out of it in front of him at the last second. I tried racing my sister's b/f in his audi a6.

I just got back from a trip to Williamsburg, Virginia from Fairfax, Virginia.
I am not a speeder. I have learned from the past; trying to be "first" can lead to anxiety and pressure. On I-495(DC area), I-95, I-295 (Richmond area) and I-64; I found that the speed limits mean little to most. Based on experience, I pegged my speed control at or about 10mph over the "posted" on I-495 and I-95 - and was passed left and right. Not a cop to be seen.
Because of entrance ramp traffic, I found myself in congested areas being in the center lane on 495 and 95, but being at or about 10mph over the limit was not goo enough for many. The right lane was too slow for even my rate of travel in some areas. That did not prevent me from being tailgated, or cut off in in "illegal" lane changes.
On 295 and 64, where the Virginia State Police seem to be able to have a greater presence; the speed traveled by most was right around 5mph over the limit. On my return trip, I took US17, just west of Williamsburg. What a great ride! No truckers riding your bumper. Everyone seemed to be pegged at about 5mph over the limit. And those that were above, well they got a ticket to the "State Ball". All in all a relaxing trip back.
The problem I have with some of the posts here, is that there seems to be a need for speed mentality. Sure I have done stupid things with speed behind the wheel of a car. But they were in short bursts in my youth.
In many urban areas, there are not enough police or places for the police to pull over speeders today. When I got my license, it was underdstood that up to 5mph over the limit was OK. Today it seems to around 10mph over the limit. But on some roads it seems to be 15mph over the limit.
The issue is, that for some of us a speeding ticket is a major hit on the wallet and/or insurance. Whether 5mph, or 15mph over the limit. But we are forced to "break the law" on speed limits because of an increasing majority that feel speed limits on certain roads are ill placed. Or maybe because they feel that they need to exercise their souped up cars.
In the end, if you want to find out how fast your car can go; go to a track. Safer for you, and the safer for the rest of us.

On a plane I was talking to a German lady who said she hates driving here. She said the roads are so open and smooth but the speed limits so slow. America is still ultra-conservative in this respect. So, I take most traffic laws as guides not laws. Why should I not turn on red if there is not any traffic? Why should I waste time and drive the highway at 55, 60 when I can still very safely drive them at 85, 90 and arrive much quicker? Same thing on roads as well. I can get through many more lights doing 45 or 55 then I can at 35 or 25. Of course I am just 19.

A little over 110 mph in my old Porsche 914 on a private (closed) road that was about 5 miles long (straight). I might have gotten faster, but I needed the space to slow down.
Other than that one time, I pretty much stuck to the speed limit during the 10 years I owned that car. I bought it (used) with about 90,000 miles on it and it had around 360,000 when I left it in California. It was a great little car, if I ever get back to California I'll most likely get another one.
Fastest in my Porsche 911 was about 80 mph (on the freeway... I was 19 and had the car for about a month at the time), fastest in my 911 Targa was just over 80 on a closed track (I only had both of those for about a year). And the fastest in a car that wasn't mine was 95 in a Ferrari 308 GTS (pretty car, uncomfortable to drive though) on the same track (and same day) as my Targa.

Turning right on a red is legal in Canada (except Quebec), and I don't see why it's an issue, it's perfectly safe as long as you look before you turn.
The rest of you post is complete crazy talk tho. The faster you go, the more likely you're going to die. Sure, you might feel safe doing 80-90 MPH, until a deer decides to run across the highway. Or you're going 55 instead of 25 in town and a young child runs out in front of you chasing after something and you can't stop. It's not your life you're putting in your hands, it's theirs.
That said, drivers have to be smart. The speed limit in some east coast provinces is 110 km/h. It was perfect.

One, we do allow for a turn on red (depending on whether it is a one way street or not. In most areas it is possible to turn right at a corner with traffic traveling in both directions; both "north and south". In some areas we allow for a left hand turn after a stop; if the the street one is making the turn on from is one way, and the the street you are making the turn from is one way.
I can not speak from Germany, but an observation in Reykjavik - they don't use horns as we do in the US. At least from the view from the "Bus"; yes the drivers seem to drive aggressively. Not nearly as much as I heard of car drivers though.
I understand the need to get some place quickly. Though in the US it seems to be self defeating due to disregard to social norms.
Does it do any good for one to race ahead of me on local streets; with them weaving in on out, and cutting others off? Only to have me coast up next to them at the next stop light?
My "impression" of Germany and their "Autobahn"; is that one of a more "civilized" view on the use of the road. Slower cars to the right, and yield to those approaching on the left. At least in my view of Iceland, no one person by ownership of a certain car, owned the road. In London, in the Hammersmith-Fuller district; there was a respect of the rules of the road.
Even in Central London, the "congestion" district they imposed seems to have have worked. For I saw traffic moving during the morning rush near Westmister that I would never expect to see any where near the Federal core in the DC area.
But in many ways it is about the respect we show each other. In Iceland, they look at each person that passes in the street or road. Maybe in some hope to see if they might know each other.
In London it is harder to place a reason; other than basic human respect. I say this only after suffering food poisoning on my flight from Reykjavik to London. I felt ill on my arrival to my B&B (The Orlando Hotel). As with another thread here on MR; I arrived trying to decide which end was most important.
To make a long story short; I went in to the city of London. Those feelings of doing a "hurl" came over me. I did deep breaths. To no avail; I hurled just outside the gates of the Westminster Tube.
When I approached the reps near the gates, they were more concerned about my well being than anything else. They asked if I needed a "Chemist" {IRC} or a Doctor. They cared not where I "hurled"; but about my well being.
The point is, I feel that we in the US, only care about ourselves on the roadway (and in other aspects of our life). We have HOV lanes in my area, I have heard firsthand that is "cheaper" to pay the ticket than to obey the law.
It is about "social responsibility". It is about respecting the "Golden Rule" of :doing unto others, as one have others do unto you". It is not just about the Bible, but the basic tenants that so many other civilizations have common beliefs in. In many ways it is supporting of "common law" from England that is the basis of US law.

I may be excessive in my speed but I still think the limits should be raised.

I may be excessive in my speed but I still think the limits should be raised.
That may have merit. But many years ago I tried to follow a group of us to the Raleigh-Durham area on I-95. This was about 15-20 years ago. They were doing 20mph+ over the limit. They were weaving in and out at a much greater rate than I think we have today.
The end result, I showed up just 1/2 hour later than they did in what should have been a 5 hour trip. I was IMO much more relaxed attitude, and did not pose a threat by tail-gating or weaving in and out.
Speed limits are not just there to get $ for tickets. They are for the safety of all.

It's not quite so perfectly safe for foreigners who aren't aware of it – when I visited Canada last month I was nearly mown down like a dog until I twigged what was going on!
Good point. I grew up being aware of it, so when I started driving it wasn't a big deal at all.
I wish the Americans I've encountered followed that rule. Slow drivers in the right lane, move over for faster drivers. I drove to the DC/ Virginia area a few summers ago, and I got extremely frustrated with the amount of people driving slow in the passing lane congesting the highway for 20-30 minutes at a time, when it was all completely unnecessary.

Wow. I'm late to reply.
I work at a Chevy Cadillac Nissan dealership. I had to go pick up a 2003-ish VW Beetle Turbo 5 speed from the diagnostics shop. I drove it back to the dealership via the freeway.
My co-worker followed me in a 2005 Nissan Maxima 3.5. Needless to say, he said he hit 140 and couldn't catch up to me. I was doing over 100 mph on the onramp. I was impressed (it's not that long). I had no idea a Bug could do that. (The last time I looked at the speedometer, it was floating around 130 and I didn't look at it for the rest of the jaunt.)

But the point is, what is "slow"?
In the DC/VA area, are we considered "slow" if we are not doing 10~20mph over the speed limit? And if one were to be caught by the "few" Virginia State Police officers; how does one defend ones self for doing lets say 7mph (don't laugh, it happened to a co-worker of mine) over the limit- while most of the traffic was doing well above that.
In court, the judge did ask why my friend was pulled over. The officer responded that it was becuase he was driving under what others were  at by his radar at 7mph over the limit. And he assumed that my friend was trying to "hide" something illegal by doing just over the speed limit. To the judges credit, he asked my friend why he was "speeding" over the posted limit. He responded that he did not want to "speed" but wanted to impeed the flow of traffic, so that what he thought was 5mph over the speed limit, would have been prudent and safe - both personally and legally.
According to my friend, the judge then asked the officer if he had observed others exceeding the posted speed limit; above the 7mph violation that my friend was cited. The officer answered "yes". Asked why in the circumstances would he make the stop for speeding, the officer stated that it was that "anyone doing that "slow"over the posted limit was "trying to hide something".
According to my friend, the case was dismissed with prejudice.
To be honest, just what is the "slow" lane in the likes of the DC/NOVA/MD area? In my area I peg my speed control at 10mph over the limit. on our I-495, I find it impossible to do the speed limit of 55mph. And given the speeds at which some drive, even the second most right hand lane is tough to do. And given the proper left hand exit to I-66 off of i-495 from the south - what is one to do?
As one that plans some travel to Canada; maybe you could provide some guidance.

The properly tuned VW can run circles among the "want to be's".
I have owned a New Beetle, and test drove a Cabrio for 20+ miles. There is nothing like driving a VW.
Owning a VW is an excersise in being forgiving. Very bad quality control. My 99 Bug had so many electronic issues I doubt that I will ever consider anything other than a Japanese brand. Though my dealer was great.

I was speaking more on the trip threw New York, and Pennsylvania. I was probably doing +10 on the speed limit. I mean when people doing the speed limit or slower are passing transport trucks and take 2-3 minutes to pass a couple, when they could easily pull in between two and let the cars behind pass. Now, it's the courteous thing to do, and what I expect driving on the highway, or at least what I've come to expect driving the 4-series highways in Ontario.
What would you like to know about Canadian highways? I suggest just setting the cruise around 115-120km/h, and know that the left lane is only for passing. You should be fine.

Please don't use me or the rest of the traveling public as a guinea pig. I think doing over 130 on public roads is absolutely stupid. They aren't maintained to the levels of proper racetracks, and aren't designed with that kind of speed in mind. They do have some challenging corners around here though. Hermann Tilke should drive around here for a while. ;)

120mph in an 86.5 Pontiac Fiero GT, which isn't bad for a 2.8L 140HP vehicle.
I did manage to hit 155mph twice on my 93 Kawasaki Ninja ZX6D, once down a one mile stretch and again on the return trip. There's nothing like hitting an aerodynamic speed limit. :) Those bikes weren't actually capable of going that fast though (rated at around 90-95 HP), and bike speedometers are typically inaccurate in those speed ranges, so I was actually doing more like 145mph.

Well they just drive poorly. I drive as relaxed at 90, 100 as I do 60. I can judge traffic so I never tailgate and I rarely use my brakes. I instead can see ahead where Ill need to slow down based on traffic and just coast to match speed . Ill then drive the matched speed until I find a hole to slip through and regain my speed.
I understand your point of safety for everyone. Many drivers here in the states probably should not drive over 60 as many of them are awful drivers who shouldnt even be licensed. When Im driving, safety is a huge concern but I feel I can drive safely at high speeds and have yet to have any close calls to dissuade me. To me high speed driving makes driving much more interesting and involving. I have a lot of problems concentrating at slow speeds because my mind will drift, so I fix this by driving at a tempo requiring careful focus.

You are rare indeed. What I love is with those that feel the need for speed, is to wave or nod at them when we catch each other at a traffic light.
To be honest though, driving at the speeds you stated can and will induce anxiety whether you know it or accept it.

All well and good for yourself, but actions such as yours may have ramifications that you are not aware of. At 90 to 100 mph, even in the DC area - you are weaving in and out of traffic to maintain that speed.
I hope that you live in the Dakotas or Wyoming in order to travel at such speeds. For I have seen people traveling speeds like you stated, that have caused accidents in their wake.
I guess the question I have for you is, why do you feel the need to break the law as you so readily have stated you have done? Keep in mind most of us understand that with speed limits, there is a certain "grace" provided - whether it is 5 or 10mph over the posted limit.
Do you feel that stop signs or traffic signals are for those that can't safely decide when to stop? Or do you feel that it is OK to steal an item from the 7-11, because the line at the register was to long and would delay your day? Or do you feel it is OK to cheat on your taxes, because the government already gets their "share"?
"Laws" are there to guide us and to provide some protection or benefit. These laws can be religious based (thou shall not steal...), common law based (a good days wages for a good days work...), or as simple as one is to observe the posted speed limit (regardless as to what you or I may think about the posted limit).
Are you saying that we can pick and choose the "laws" as we see fit? I don't think so.
For in some ways speeding on the roads is like the "broken window syndrome". In which a car can be on a street, for days on end, without a scratch on it. But break a window on that car, and it be stripped and defiled in a matter of hours, if not just a couple of days.
IMO, one can only look at the disrespect of the "law" in the past 20 to 30 years in order to see how we treat each other in the day to day dealings. It has become a situation that "I am more important" than you. And that is what "laws" were set in place to prevent.

Theft of a good denies the rightful owner of that good. There is a 100% probability of harm. Speeding depends on many factors. Anecdotal references to others who have caused harm, while serving as a cautionary tale, is not relavent to the probability of another individual causing harm.
Some laws protect us from guaranteed harm. Many traffic regulations are merely protocols, that outline a minimal strategy for avoiding harm, and maintaining good traffic flow. Some people have alternate strategies. For example, you're only supposed to pass on the left. On the highway I try to do that, but when someone is camping in the left lane, I will move into the right lane from a distance, so they have time to see me in it. I will then be very vigilent as I pass, in case they might migrate into my lane. You see, I know the reason for that regulation, and so when I break it, I take the appropriate precautions, so that it's no more dangerous than following the law. I believe that's the sentiment some of the speeders here are trying to convey.
And to specifically respond to your traffic signal/stop light question: Who here has not come to an intersection where you can see in all directions for kilometers on end. Do you come to a full and complete stop if there's a stop sign? Also, what if it's 4am, and there are zero vehicles or pedestrians in sight at all, and you can clearly see in all directions, and there is no red light camera. Do you wait for the light to change? When there's no traffic at all, do you respect No U-Turn signs, if you made a wrong turn and have to go back? I can understand saying no to some of these questions, but all of them? I doubt it.

I have no qualms about riding in a car on the track less than six inches behind the car in front both rounding an off-camber turn doing well over 75mph-- but a track has controlled conditions! Ambulance at the ready. A crew ready to clean track spills. Clean and conditioned surfaces. All the drivers out there know to follow flags and to adhere to track ettiquete (sp?)...
I rode with one instructor driving and he said I was so different from his wife who couldn't stand his fast driving. To which I replied, "Well, you speeding on this track is fine, I trust you. I'm sure your wife trusts your driving as well. But speeding in a minivan on a public road with all sorts of other drivers and conditions is a whole 'nother thing."
He could do nothing but agree.

125 MPH in a 1994 Ford Escort GT while driving from Phoenix to Las Vegas. (Three of us in college were going to Vegas for New Years '98, had to pick up one at the Phoenix airport at 8:30 PM.) For a large part of the drive, there were three cars in a row doing 120: Brand-spankin-new '98 Corvette, us, and an early '90s Porsche 911. We'd pass the 'slow' (90 MPH) cars as a group.
It was fun. I drove about half of it, one of the others going along (who owned a Corvette,) drove the other half. The third guy was white-knuckled the whole way. (And he thought he was going to become an Air Force fighter pilot when he graduated...)
The fastest car I've ever been in was 140 MPH in a 1984 Ford Thunderbird 4 cyl Turbo. Well, we think we were going 140. The speedo only went up to 120, and the needle was about 10 MPH beyond that. Based on how long it took the needle to start dropping when he let off the gas, and how fast the needle kept dropping, we estimated 140.
Now that I'm a responsible adult, I don't advocate driving like that unless you're on a track. I don't care if you want to kill yourself, but don't put me and my family at risk from your carelessness. (I've now seen too many accidents where the idiot kid (like I was,) killed innocent bystanders, yet the idiot kid lived.)

I live in Cleveland and drive the same stretch of highway most of the time so i have it memorized. Where cops will be, where traffic gets heavier, where I need to watch for merging cars etc. I do though at rush hour have to weave to mantain that speed and sometimes have to slow down to 70.

141 Mph (227 kph) in My 2005 Mustang GT...
I hope you didn't take that while YOU were driving...
Fastest I've driven myself, about 75 MPH in a 2007 Ford Focus. My dad was going nuts, it's pretty dangerous to drive on mountains with nearly right angle curves :p. (He's teaching me to drive, thinks I should learn early.)
The fastest I've ever been in, 120 MPH in a 1999 Ford Escort, with a friend's mom. I was a passenger.
Unlike most teens these days, I can drive stick and I don't even have a permit :D

Me driving, about 140 kph
Someone else with me in the car, 240 kph. Then the **** picked up his cell phone and started writing a SMS! Needless to say, that's the last time I ever got on a car with him

125mph on a straight stretch of the 5 freeway going to northern california. on the return trip, my friend hit 130, and it always bothered me that someone else got to drive my own car faster than me. in my current car, 115mph.

110 km/h, which is 68.3508311 mph. :D
I got my driver's licence only a couple of months ago (have to be 18 to get it in here, btw) and the speed limits are 100km/h on the highways during the winter, so I haven't really had a chance to drive very fast, yet.
Also, I don't have my own car, I use my parents' Toyota Yaris Verso, which has an amazingly small 1.3 liter petrol engine, so I doubt I could go very fast, even if I had the chance to try. :(

Sadly, my 2000 Chrysler Concorde is limited to 118MPH. At that speed, it's very composed and feels fine, albeit loud. My mothers car will do 125 - also have toped that out. I routinely will do between 90-100 when I'm alone on the highways near my home. However, if there's any traffic at all, I won't drive over 80; or if people are in my car.
I've had a Jaguar XJ8 (2006) up to 130. That's the fastest *I* personally have driven. Empty highway, 4 miles of straight, alone, dusk, friend of the Statie who patrols that stretch of Interstate, along with a shiny, new $70,000 luxury cruiser. :)

I had a Dodge Intrepid that had a speedometer that went up to 120. I know I went faster then that, I just had no way to measure it.
Oh- After that I started having engine problems.
Next car was a Ford Expedition, I got 98 on that. Now I own a Sierra, I think i have only gone 90 or so in that, I'm getting less reckless in my old age.

I want to say 115mph in my old 1992 Sentra SE-R on the Sam Houston Toll way rushing to get to a test I had to take a the Jr College so I would of been 19.
Lets see a little over a year ago I took my 2004 Sentra Spec V to 115 aroun the loop here in Lubbock one night because I was in a really really bad mood so I just took my car out for a spin.
Both times at 115 my sanity would start to kick back in.
Took my dads car 99 accord to 110-115 mph when I was 16 because I didn't know I was going that fast until I blew by another car like he was standing still. Look down as the speedo--Brake
I just lack the guts to go faster than that for fear of getting pulled over and handed a nice ticket or worse put in the back of a cruiser in cuffs. Now on my long drive back to Houston I normally cruise at 75ish because the state troops do not really set up in one area. They tend to move around but they hide really well. They will sit in a dip in the road and then turn their radar guns to lowest power setting. Doing that pretty much means by the time your radar detector goes of you been clocked.
Also my speeding has cool off a lot because between getting older and quite frankly I can not afford any more speeding tickets after 3 I got in 2 weeks last year killed off 1/2 my savings

I was about 16 when I got my first 300zx, One guy pulled over, I freaked out and ran hit about 145mph and they "let me go." 3 Months later they come knocking on my door with a court order to impound my car for 30 days.
Me and my buddy just finished washing our cars.
Yea I know, I was an idiot.

110 MPH in a 1992 Camaro Z28. The kicker, we put it on cruise control too. So, 110 MPH on cruise control. Oh so stupid, but yet oh so fun.

wow... old thread.. many pages!!
Living in Holland means living close to automobile heaven: Deutsche Autobahn.
Not that I often get the chance to take my Beamer for a spin on the brilliant roads of our eastern neighbours, but if I do go there once in a while and get a nice bit of unrestricted roads (which luckily are close to the border ;) ), I always try to top 200 Km/h (125 mph).
Fastest..? Probably 240 Km/h (150 mph).
I love the speed. Especially if its legal.

My brother-in-law and I got up 165mph on a 2 lane highway with 7 chp's (thats california highway patrols for those who don't know) behind us chasing us. We were in his 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX MR. Needless to say we out ran them.
But the fastest I've driven personally was 120mph in my 300ZX. Going fast is fun!

138 in a Mazda MX6 about 18 years ago. Quite possibly the stupidest thing I have ever done as well as I had 4 friends in the car with me at the time. Could have been disasterous.

As i am 16 in the UK, nothing.
The fastest i have evr been is 134mph in a V6 Renault Espace. A Belgian guy in his 2.2 diesel Espace was being an idiot so my dad went to overtake him. The look on his face was priceless.

Same...:(
The fastest I've probably been is in a taxi in Seville. It was a Mercedes (sorry, can't remember which one) and the driver thought that going at over 120mph was the way to go - I was exhilirated, my mum was petrified. I think I was about 11.

I managed 105 mph in my 1992 Daihatsu Charade 1.3. Tail wind helped. Otherwise it pretty much tops out at 95 mph. Either way, it's petty scary going that fast in such a light car - I didn't stay there for long!

I've gone 150-165MPH on several occasions in my dad's 1974 DeTomaso Pantera. He has since sold the car.
One time driving from Toronto back to Michigan in my 1989 Honda Prelude 2.0Si, I topped it out at 129MPH, FOR 45 MINUTES NON-STOP without letting off the gas. Suffice it to say, I had both hands on the wheel and the road was not exactly straight all the time. A 4 1/2 - 5 hour drive took me just under 3.

Yeah. Before the '06, she had a 1999 XJ which now is one of her Florida cars. I'm really impressed with Jaguar's latest efforts, and in a sense, I almost like the new XJ better than the current 7 Series, which I've driven (not at 130 though!!).

As far as I can remember, the 45 minutes ended for 2 reasons:
1. I figured I was pushing my luck and should slow down a little.
2. I needed to fill up.
The latter was the more pressing issue. It sure was fun. Dumb, but fun. It was the middle of the day but while I was passing the occasional car, not too many people on the road. Funny thing was that when I left Toronto there was gridlock for 10-15 minutes. And even after that it took me a while to where I was really out of the metropolitan area and could take it up. I think it was making up time for the gridlock that got me going fast, and then I just kept going faster and faster till I topped it out. From there I just kept my foot down and steered. I tell you it does take some focus and wears you out a little.
