What's the fastest speed you have driven at yourself ?
For me, that would be 200 km/h (~ 120 mph). I had borrowed a Mazda MX-5 and made a nice trip with a friend. Didn't drive too long at that speed, though' since with a convertible, it is nicer to drive around 140 km/h (~ 84 mph).

The fastest I've ever driven was about 125mph in my V6 Camry a few years ago.
In my current Matrix, I've barely broken 105mph.

About 105 mph. Probably going to try and break it this weekend in France (as you do not get points on your license when caught there!)

whoa. we've got lots of people here that like to go fast! :D
the most i've gone is about 130... km/h. i'm still only on my provisional license, so if i got caught i think my license would be suspended for about a year or something. that would be a major bummer.
but when i get my motorbike... that's a completely different story. i'll be taking that beast to lots & lots of track days. :D

I've been at 215 km/h (135 mph) in two different cars - once was my bro's 300 ZX, the other was the 88' Toyota Supra.
I have only been about 180 km/h in my Solara - I cringe at all of the bugs that get smeared on the car when you go that fast!

Fastest I have been is around 100 in a Dodge Ramcharger. (http://www.off-road.com/dodge/ramcharger/) The Speedometer in the Dodge only goes to 83, but I had my friend in front of me in a Toyota Tercel. :) It would have been faster, but I only had 1/2 of a mile of straight road. (Before a 90 degree turn)

Possibly 105 in a '92 Lincoln Continental. For some reason they stopped the digital speedometer at 85 mph (too many manufacturers do that). It's got a solid V6 in it and can get going quite fast, I just won't know how fast that is.

Back in 97 I bought a brand new Z28 and my dad bought a new vette. He said, lets go found out how fast your Z will go. I said, okay if we can take your vette out next. My Z would only do 151, but his vette would do 172. Now that I have a daughter, I would never do that again...

heh - I used to have a BIG ramcharger with a 16" lift kit and BIG 44" mudders - it was the original Mudbug (where my name really came from, btw - it was my license plate) If the one you were driving was anything like mine, then 100 mph in it scared you witless - mine would start to shimmy and shake a good bit at anything over 80, but mostly from the soft tires...
I've done 150 in a Ferrari 308 GTB (think Magnum PI) that a friend owned when I was growing up in Baton Rouge - I want to try it again, in something just as supersweet...

I don't know... My POS Taurus only reads up to 85, but I estimate 95, in Michigan, where if you're going 85, You'll get run over.
As A Passenger 115 on US23 Between Flint, MI and M-56.
And 175 in a Piper Cherokee, over my hometown.

I got up to 110 mph in a subaru station wagon, over a hundred in that thing a few times. Now I drive a saturn, so it can't go that fast (and I wouldn't trust it if it could). I've been in a car with my friend driving at over 120 mph in his '87 BMW 535is. crazy thing about that car was that you would feel the back end settle in at about 120 mph. It was more stable at that speed than at 110 or 100 it felt like. My next car will likely be a subaru wrx. and that sucker flies, so we'll have to see then.

In my Ford Probe GT, I've hit 120+, the speedometer only goes up to 120 but it goes much faster so I can't tell since I buried the needle long before I let off the gas...it was on an onramp outside of Orlando merging onto I-75 I believe. In my dad's Malibu, I've hit the max, 105, I hate those rev limiters! In my friend's Porsche 911, I hit 90 something before hitting a puddle and spinning...in his Lamborghini, I hit about 215 mph, though. It was on his dad's runway so we had lots of room to get up to speed. In my parent's Aztek, I hit maybe 95, the thing took forever to get up there. And in my boss' Mustang GT I hit 110. I love cars! :D

There's just no way that a '78 Nova did 120mph. Unless it was seriously hopped up.

Three seperate occations.
A friend of mine in college had a Ferrari 512 BB. We got it up to 174MPH going to Birmingham on I20/59
I had a Taurus SHO with a SuperCharger and personally got it up to 168MPH, and Eye, you will know this road. Between Baton Rouge and Lafayette.
Going to Arizona in 1988, my Mustang GT 5.0 with SuperCharger 163MPH going across the Texas desert on I-10. Wow, there is nothing in west Texas from San Antonio to El Paso. Well, Ft. Stockton and Van Horn ;)

I got pulled over once in Virginia for doing 115 on Interstate 85. That was a very bad day.
Somehow, when I saw the unmarked car closing on me, the only thought through my mind was "great! now if anyone gets pulled over, it'll be this maniac doing 120 in a Caprice, not me!".
When he finally pulled me over, and approached my window, I said "Is there a problem officer?" and then couldn't stop from laughing. In retrospect, a bad move.

I can't resist retelling this story in this thread:
Back in 1992, when I worked for NeXT, I once had occasion to drive Steve Jobs to the airport in North Carolina. He was going to miss his flight unless we hit light speed, so he agreed to pay for any tickets or increased insurance premiums I'd have as a result of flooring it. Unfortunately, that car (a 1980 BMW 320I) couldn't do much more than 105, but trust me, it was a white knuckled 105.
He made his flight. The rest is history.

Sigh, I miss that RamCharger.... It had street tires so it did a pretty smooth 100... The suspension on that thing was unbelievable. I never rolled it, and only came close once.. You are absolutely right. ~240kph in a 1990 520i outside München.
134mph in a 1986 Supra on 41 north of Chicago - scaaaary. Car not happy.
But we U.S.'ers have an answer now, and that answer is:
MONTANA
There have been anumber of Europeans that go there to scream the Rockies. I'm sure some get killed, but I understand it's Scary as hell, as the road - unlike the Autobahn - was not graded or surfaced for those speeds.

The downside of using Montana is that while using it as your personal State Of Autobahniness, the cops can still pull you over for what they deem "unsafe or wreckless speed" which is totally at their discretion, and usually in the neighborhood of 100 mph or faster.

hmmmm....
well in a ruf twin turbo porsche i hit upwards of 175+...have no idea exactly what the mph was....i was driving ya know...
fastest officially clocked...148mph by the wonderful texas highway patrol. my '76 911s targa was a smoker. in my hometown i regularly got pulled over and hassled...being a teenage guy with waist length hair in texas( in 1979) was pretty much a crime unto itself... throw in a porsche and you might as well put a bulls-eye on the hood.
fastest sustained speed was minimum 110 from dallas to houston...believe it or not, two 18 wheelers drove with us for half an hour at 110...drafting on them was fun though i don't think they got the same effect from us...:D we did kick it up to 135 for a while. that was in a porsche carerra.
none of those speeds were as scary as doing 56mph on a mountain bike while downhilling in tahoe...that was the only time i thought seriously about dying...especially when you know your chain bounced off at around 40 and you know what happens when a chain locks up your rear wheel at speed.

Fastest I've been:
150 in my BMW 330Ci. I do 120 regularly
140 in Porsche Boxster
135 in BMW X5
130 in my 1978 Porsche 911SC
130 in a Barber Dodge race car
120 in Volvo V70 Wagon
97 in the crappy family Suburban (Speed Governor)
The 78 Porsche gave me the largest sensation of speed, because the car is so low and so old. Has racing seats, harness, roll bar, etc.
The BMW 330Ci gives me the least sensation of speed, so smooth and quite at crazy speeds. Excellent car.

i have a friend that has surpassed 250 mph...but he did that on F1s and Indy Cars at the racing school at Laguna Seca in California...he pulled more Gs than my air force pilot friend and driving in 150 degree heat (in the car) seeing only a narrow tunnel and black and white..which is not my idea of fun...that's what the high end racecar drivers have to go through....some lose several pounds just in one race!!

Well a friend of mine had a 70's vintage camaro with a 327 that we built extensively. It was pushing about 400HP when we were done. We got it up to 169MPH on a timed mile and just ran out of room and had to slow down.
I had a 1985 CRX Si that we lowered as far as possible to reduce drag and then milled the head and did some other minor engine work and we got it up to a timed mile of 138MPH.
Going fast in a car is one thing and yes when you get up to 120+ you really feel like your moving and then at 140-150+ it's insane but do it on a bike. I've been to 158MPH on a motorcycle and let me tell you that feels insane with the wind ripping by you.
I don't believe anyone who tells me they've been to such and such speed unless they timed out a mile. The reason is most cars speedometers are off on the plus side by about 5-10% at 60MPH. That means at 120MPH the speedometer could be reading as much as 12MPH off on the fast side. Meaning they're speedometer is reading 132 but they're only doing 120MPH. This only gets worse the faster you go and at 180MPH the speedometer would be reading 198.

I was in Germany for work and my wife came. Hertz messed up, so instead of the SMART car (or other little boxy number) we ended up with a brand new BMW 325i convertible.
Unfortuantely it rained alot, so we never got to take the top down.
However, driving from the hotel to my work, I managed to get up to about 220kph (about 137mph)! :D
But my wife went down to Heidelberg and hit 240kph/150mph before she backed off.

In my diesel -- 112, drag limited (in a light mist -- no radar or laser works)
Now, when I get the ol' TDI chipped, she'll be pushing 120+ at 35mpg!

The reason is most cars speedometers are off on the plus side by about 5-10% at 60MPH.
Yep, most bikes, too. My fastest momentary speed was 155 MPH indicated on a VFR800 on Hwy 33 in California, and 147 indicated sustained for 30 minutes+ on the same road, riding a CBR600F3.
I rode a Hyabusa on Angeles Crest but was too chickensh*t to bust 65 :-)

Montana has had a very strict 75mph speed limit since 2000. They had a problem with "Yahooes" going 150+, which with a 4-Lane Freeway, and trucks limited to 60mph was not a good combination.
Wikipedia Article on Speed Limits (http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_limit)
But of course they usually give the 5-10mph over that the rest of the country has. Plus becuase of the belief in Montanabon, the cops now have credit card readers in the patrol cars, and will pull you over if you are going 86 or faster.

155MPH all the time between San Francisco and Los Angeles (Used to have to travel it often for work on weekends and the Central Valley is a joy to drive except for the areas patrolled by plane) At 155MPH, the engine disengaged from the transmission (kind of a floaty feeling that always disturbed me) until it dropped down again to 155MPH. I always meant to get the chip limiter taken off, but you go through tires really quickly at those speeds and they are pricey for that speed rating.
I also used to do 155MPH between St. Louis and Chicago. The distance is usually through farm land where you can see cops miles away.
After about 120MPH, the speed difference doesn't seem to be as noticeable because the interior cabin sound doesn't change and since you're concentrating on driving and only looking straight ahead on "cop watch", you don't look to see the things flying by on the side :D
Fastest I've driven (period) is 187MPH in a Ferrari 456GT on a race track, alone. I got nervous then and didn't choose to tryout the race spec'd Ferraris (though I did admire their sound.)

I think I might have like a heart attack or a panic attack if I was going that fast on a motorcycle...

ok, in my Lancia Delta HF Turbo (1.6l fwd) I managed 121mph, and it's rated at 122mph. That was sutained too, it would get there hella quick. I regularly went over a 100mph and not just on straights either, here's one for iGAV, racing an RS Turbo up the A1, hit top speed, round long sweeping corners, not easing off a bit, beat the RS because of it :D
in my Toyota Corolla hatch (1.3 12v fwd 5sp) i had 4 friends in the car and hit 101mph in 3rd gear! but that maxed out at 105 (in 4th i think, 103 in 5th)
just last week i did 109mph in a friend's Land Rover Discovery, backed off as it became a tad unstable.
i went from Boston to The Bronx, dropped a friend off, and on to Brooklyn, in 2 and a half hours before, average of about 90 i think.
and that's on public roads (oh, and for those who know, i live right at the end of the B660, one of the best driving roads in England, and only a couple of miles away from the new Bedford Autodrome, flew past there every day on my way to school, took the bus 28 minutes, my record was 6, and it's 11 miles of country roads :D )
on the track, around 130ish in a 16v 'grale and an Alfa SZ.
one of these days i'll get above that, hopefully sideways at Pikes Peak

I don't know if thats true or not, but some have very good reasons for limiting speed. Mercedes E55 (I think it was that model) is limited to 155 mph because no one mass produces tires capable of taking such a heavy car any faster. its capable of quite a bit more.

Nah, that's the great thing about a bike. With a little car it takes a day and an age to get to top speed. With a big bike you can do it in 5 secs and then be back at legal speeds 5 secs later. So your time of danger is much much lower.

Well that would be a good guess but it wouldn't be right. My first street bike was a '91 Suzuki Bandit 400 back in '94. By the way I've been riding motorcycles on my own since I was 6. In any case I started using Bandit as my online name back then and started using MacBandit in about '96 when I started joining Mac sites.
In any case the bike I was riding was a BMW K1200RS. I worked at a BMW Motorcycle shop for 7 years and was Service Manager for 5. Sometimes you have a customer that wants you to take it out as fast as you can and make sure everything is okay with it. It just so happened that on that day the road was clear and the weather was good. I would have gone faster but they're limited to that speed.
My previous fastest speed was on a BMW R1100RS at 146. I just ran out of straight away. I use to live out in the country and the closest pizza place was 7 miles away one way. So I went for the pizza on the bike. Motorcycles have been my only form of transportation for most of my life even with Oregon rain. In any case I was able to get down the curvy country road and to the pizza parlor and back in 12 mins. That included paying for and strapping the pizza on. Oh, and when I got back the pizza was still burning hot in the middle of winter. Fastest pizza delivery I have ever heard of.

I love reading all the posts from guys with really spiffy sports cars who've gone soooo fast.
I have a crappy, 23rd hand, 1998 Chrysler Lebaron. It grinds when I'm in what I guess is equivalent to first gear (automatic transmission). I've gone over 180 Km/hr in my car many times, but last year I went 195 Km/hr, with three passengers. Let's just say that I did it when they were all busy talking, so they (girls) wouldn't freak out. Unfortunately my girlfriend felt how fast we were going and looked at the speedometer. For some reason, she wasn't as impressed as I was...
The speedometer only goes to 200 Km/hr, so I think I'd need to be going down a hill to go any faster ;)

I live in Calgary, Alberta, which is basically right by the mountains. When I was 15 or so, my Dad was driving down the mountain, and I said "maybe we can save gas by just putting it in neutral". My Dad and I are of Scottish descent, so that was appealing :D
Well, when it came time to break and turn, he realized that the car had stalled, and so the power stearing and power breaks weren't working. He wasn't sure if he could just turn the car on again without breaking it (you can)... I'm pretty glad that he worked out a lot, because we came pretty freakin close to dieing that day. He just barely kept us on the road, while the breaks slowly decellerated us to a stop, several kilometers down the road.

Hell, yeah. I've had my share of fun in beaters. My first car was a '79 Datsun 310 which I bought for $600 in '92. At the time it looked very very good for it's age and had low mieles. I use to do 100mph in it daily coming home from high school. One time on my way to washington I got it up to 120MPH going down a really long hill. It never ran the same after that as I floated the valves on it for about a mile to get to that speed. Later on I took out a deer at about 90mph and had to put a new radiator, hood, and front fender on it from a junk car I bought. Then I forgot to put coolant in it and just put water in it which froze and the car over heated and warped the head. So I put the head off the beater car on mine which had worse valve guides then the one I took off. Ahh, my first car, there wasn't much left when I was done with it. I also jumped it quite a bit.

actually mate, superchargers and turbos are very different to one another. a supercharger compresses the air before it enters the engine, the denser the air, the better it is, whereas a turbo works on the exhaust gasses. the latter being more fun i think, as it's not as smooth as the supercharger (although these days they're a little more subtle). nothing like watching that turbo boost guage creeping from the negative into the boost zone and feeling it punch you in the back and catapult you forward at scary speeds :D

I agree about the fun factor but if you want to go fast a SuperCharger will typically beat a Turbo any day except in price.
Also just to add a little on the explanation of the two... A super charger is typically belt driven off the crank shaft like the Alternator is. It cranks a compressor that compresses the incoming air into the intake of the car. A turbo does a very similar thing but instead of being ran off the crank shaft it is is propelled by exhaust gases. You basically have to fan blades. One is in the exhaust being pushed by the exhaust. The other fan is in the intake of the car but the intake has to be ran down low in the car near the exhaust so the fan can be put in it. Compressing air causes it to heat up and expand which in turn defeats the purpose of getting more oxygen in the motor. So what you do is run the compressed air through what is called an intercooler (not all turbo or supercharged cars have them). An intercooler is basically a big radiator that the compressed air goes through prior to entering the intake. It is more common to run an intercooler on a turbo then a supercharge simple because turbos heat the incoming air more due to there proximity to the exhaust.

The RX-7 isn't dead. They are actually going to bring it back. I can't remember when but I'm thinking it is next year also.
Personally I prefer a normally aspirated car with the same amount of horsepower as the turbo/supercharged car. It's much more reliable and has a better power delivery. If you want to go fast everywhere not just in a straight line then power delivery is extremely important.

I've heard it is coming back, too, in fact, I believe in Japan they have been selling the RX-7 and Supras to this day. I agree with the more reliable power delivery of a NA engine, but I just cannot describe the kinds of ****s and giggles you get when you are working a turbo...it's just a whole different experience and it's a blast.
My turbo is fast....a Camero SS may have lots more raw power at any given time and be faster overall...but when the turbo kicks in, you have the whole experience of the boost guage going wild, the sound of the turbo spooling up, the sound of the BOV between beautifully orchestrated shifts and the skills you pick up in order to keep that turbo spooling to its max at any given time. It takes more talent to get a turbo to perform to its capabilities, and to me, that's a big part of driving--the experience. Besides, when I have the turbo kicking in, this is basically all you see of my car...

Agreed, the Supra rocked hard. I went to Europe a couple of years ago and at Monoco I saw a bright yellow Toyota Supra twin turbo...it was new, shiney, and *so* sweet. They were seriously great cars and even now a used one will cost you an arm and a leg.

Fastest I've ever gone was 157+ on my suped up Honda VFR750. Not sure how much faster because I was still accelerating when I passed the cop who clocked me. He didn't catch up to me until I was in my driveway already cleaning off my bike for about 5 minutes.

Actually the RX8 is not a replacement for the RX7 and they are sold side by side in Japan. They never quit producing the RX7. They merely quit importing it. They are supposed to importing next years model though.

I know exactly what you are talking about with the power rush. If you like that you would piss yourself on a 2-stroke dirt bike. With the older 2-strokes when they hit powerband they all but ripped your arms out of there sockets and tried to flip over backwards in the process. The new ones have a lot better power delivery but still have a huge rush of power. Also 4 cylinder sport bikes have a huge rush of power too way more then any turbo car I have ever driven.

And as for the supercharger vs. turbocharger for my car, i can get the upgraded turbos that were made for the 280Z bloody cheap and then further modify the hell out of it. Where as if i went supercharger i would have to have it specially designed. I only know one other person with a supercharger on their 240Z (and i know a LOT of people with Zs thanks to the Ontario Z Car club) and it cost him close to $8000 to put it on his car. Im looking to do the whole project for roughly $2000 tops. And also ive already got close to 350HP (my motor is on the virge of insane for a Nissan striaght six motor) so i dont really care about the extra gains from the supercharger.
Hope these two posts answer the questions people have had about my car. Oh and one last thing for the record, I've never topped my car out. Im pretty sure in the condition its in now it can pull close to 170 - 180 MPH but the front end just lifts to much. 350HP in a 240z is a lot of power. They don't weigh very much and they are quite aerodynamic. The front bumper/spoiler will make a HUGE difference in stability at speed. The car will also accelerate better at higher speeds due to improved aerodynamics.

There are lots of subtle ways to do it. You could, for example, add a ton of horsepower by reworking the exhaust and the heads without any outward signs. But maybe that's not "ricing it up"? I have to agree with you , though. The sight of civics with 2" exhausts spitting out of a 6" tailpipe crack me up.

i don't thing tweaking the exhaust/intake system on a car to improve performance is ricing it. you don't need flashy exhaust pipes to make the exhaust system pump it out. you can probably make such mods conservatively. i'd be all for that, long as you know what you're doing.

yeah im debating with my self if i want to get the cold air intake, i know it will give my TL a throatier sound instead of a bumble bee. i would replace the headers because they will add tons of horsepower, but ill have to wait for more cash. I have 3 small mods to start my car knowledge of with. i ordered hyper white bulbs to replace my high beams and fogs to matce my low HID's. this will hold me off until i buy real HID's. i am going to rewire my fog lights so i can drive with them without the headlights on. do radar detectors actually do anything for you? i was talking with an ex-cop when i took defensive driving some time ago, and he was laughing at the people who'd spent so much money on them now. he said that they've changed radar gun to only put radar signals out when they gun someone, so that it's basically too late for the detector to tell you there's a cop around, because you've been gunned already. the only thing they are good for, he said, is telling you you've been gunned before you get pulled over.

While this is true, it doesn't mean that radar detectors are useless. If you're smart about your driving patterns, you always try to have a pack of fast cars out in front of you. Your hope is that when they point the radar at them, you'll pick it up and be able to stop before they point the radar at you.
Of course, someone who understands this doesn't want to be the one driving out in front of you. Fortunately, there is no shortage of dim but lead-footed people on the highways

I agree about the radar detectors, but some, like the Valentine 1, actually pay for your ticket if the detector did not work for you. As far as the "rice-ing up" your car debate, I like things to be stealthy. On my car, I simply did internal work, such as removed the resonence box, added a custom air intake from parts I got from Home Depot and had it running down the inside of the bumper next to the fog light, did some internal tweaks to the turbo, increased the psi by a few lbs, added better fuel injectors and spark plugs, and stuff like that. My car looks purely stock, the only outside parts that are different are the slightly wider tires, the better wipers, the xenon lights, and the Apple sticker on the hatch glass. I've thought of swapping out the rims on my car with stock 96-97 chrome GT rims, but they are hard to find in good condition without paying an arm and a leg for them. The resulting look is very much stock, but now a top speed is well into the 150s and acceleration is down into the high 5 to low 6 depending on shifting. Definitely not bad for a 14 year old 145 hp stock with 169,000 miles on her.

Yeah, stupid, but it was a rush. Since then, I've only gotten close a couple of times. Once in a Dodge Conquest TSI (95), and an Eagle Talon (90). Now I am relegated to the minivan set, so speeding at an acceptable speed is out of the question. At least until my kids grow up and I can spend their inheritance on a REAL car. :D

Good eye, it is indeed the first year 1989 Probe. I personally think they were the best, not to mention they are the most limited of the entire Probe run. They have the most unique look, plus they are also the lightest Probe GT made in the 8 years they made them. That was before they started adding airbags, ABS, automatics, trip computers, and other things that just weighed them down and diluted their true nature. Funny thing is, the Probe was originally made to be the next generation Mustang--until people found out it was a FWD 4 cyl that was going to replace the old school RWD V8 and it was basically petitioned into becoming its own entity. It's definitely a sweet ride, and well worth the money you put into it. And best part is...it's got Ford badges so insurance is lower than if it were a foreign car, yet it is almost 100% Japanese in parts. :)

My comments on Radar Guns to shadowfax and iJon:
Radar Detectors are only good in detecting the non-experianced Cops, if a cop wants you they will wait patiently and when you go zooming by they will flip it on and clock you.
Tada:

Sure most cops just get lazy and leave it on all the time and then it will work fine.
Also you want one with the proper waylengths most of them have mutiple of them, you want the latest in speeding technology. :p

i look at radar and driving like this. there is always a rabbit on the road, you find the rabbit and follow him. he is always going fast. let him get beamed and then you slow down. every one follows the rabbit, only bad thing is is being the rabbit, which i can be quite frequently. There is only one town that i drive through which has abotut 300 people in it, but all there money comes from speeding tickets so they have all this fancy gear. actually i like their fancy gear because they helped us catch someone who broke windows at our store by using their infrared googles, but basically what im trying to say is i dont speed in that town no matter what.

'97 Ford Fiesta MK4 1.25 Zetec 16V (£2500) - Not had a good chance to really rag it yet, but 110 is effortless. It's rated to 115 or somewhere near but I don't believe that for a second.

I've only taken a couple of relatively weak cars up to any sort of mentionable speed:
in my BMW 318i, I took it up to 114mph. It could have gone a little faster (probably only up to 120 or 125, gear limited) but I saw a sharp turn coming up and didn't want to fly off the road..BMWs are also electronically limited to 155 so even in a much more powerful bimmer I couldn't have gone much faster.
In my girlfriends Nissan Sentra GXE, it maxes out at about 105mph.
I guess that's not too bad for a couple of 4-bangers.. Luckily around here (El Paso, TX) there's plenty of near-by roads with few onramps and low traffic to bring your car up to speed (I-10 and I-25)

I don't know they all have a lot more power then they did just a 5 years ago. Even your standard family car has more power then a run of the mill sports car did 10 years ago.

Haven't read the whole thread, but for something other than sports cars:
165mph on my Honda VTR1000 on the M5 motorway.
The bike was still accelerating, but I backed off as the front wheel was lifting!!!

I agree, but the actual sports cars are getting heavy, or getting 4 doors, or all going automatic (why!!!!!) It just seems like the pure sports car with its extra light body, tight suspension, killer manual, and all the stuff that gives it that pureness is leaving the scene.

They're around just not in the US. You can thank regulations for that.
I would love a Lotus Elise. 1773lbs and 156 HP. That would be a riot.
They're are a lot of cars in the same niche all over the world but are not available here. Thank you big brother.

Well, it's evolution. I remember the 70"s when there were cars with 500+ HP and that was sort of a "no-biggie". The problem was these cars needed that HP to get out of their own way - they were so heavy, badly suspended, and huge.
Now, a little bit of torque goes a lot farther.
As for four doors, well, that's no sports car. Though two half-suicide doors (like on the RX-8) is intriguing - reserving judgement here.
And why automatic? One word: traffic. With as much gridlock as most of the buying public lives around, working a clutch in bumper to bumper hurts - my next car is an automatic for this very reason. That, and resale value.

I agree an auto is easier in traffic, but dealing with a clutch in rush hour is a sacrifice I am willing to make because nothing beats working the clutch and rowing through the gears as you are driving. After driving my Probe for quite some time, I had to drive my dad's Pontiac Vibe while he took my mom's car down to get the brakes fixed so he could drive his car back when he dropped it off. I have to say, it was the most annoying thing ever. Between trying to clutch an invisible cluth half the time (damn, it's crazy how 'used' to it you can get while driving) I noticed that the car would shift at the worst times (why shift at 4k when you can take it to 6k?) and it took forever for the engine to even rev. One of my friends has a Matrix with a 6 speed and it revs pretty well, so I know it isn't the engine, so it was the auto that was making it such a pain. I guess I'm just bitter...because so many people buy autos, it's making it nearly impossible just to find a car with a manual anymore. Come on, they cost less, add less weight to the car, get better gas mileage, and they make driving so much more entertaining, what more could you ask for!

over 120 mph. It was in my Toyota Echo, and the speedometer only goes to 120. The needle hit the odometer so I decided to slow down. (This was an Echo, I was going downhill on the interstate.) Hopefully in a few months when I get my gen 2 Solara I'll break my speed record!

Someone asked me about the cost of my ticket and fees that I got in my NSX in Utah 987.00 so almost a grand. the juge was really cool about it he new a lot about cars and understood why I was driving that fast int he middle of now where. (that is probably why he didn't throw my happy ass in jail) For some reason when I was in the military we would always haul ass now to LV from Hill AFB and never see any cops but for the last few years the have been really busy busting jackass like me that just wont slow down. they would always say oh LV that is only about 3 to 4 hours away! Now it is back to about 6 :( But that is life.

so who took the pic? And what time of day were you doing this?
It would have been quite humorous to here what you would have said to the cop who pulled you over....
Ah, there's this website.....:D
And I hope this doesn't become a contest....anyone gets hurt doing something stupid the only prize you'll get is possible entry into the Darwin Awards.

And there is only one thing worse than winning a Darwin Award, and that is getting a Runner Up.
"Performing a spectacular display of stupidiy while failing to remove oneself from the gene pool."
Usually this means the Darwin Runner Up has survived his stupid moment and must now live with the insults and injuries.
Like the fellow in West Virginia who bit down on a blasting cap and blew his lips off, and teeth out.(oooooo, I'm tempted to say something about 'fitting right in' but I won't - DOH!)

Can you mount a video camera to the tank and take a vid of you accelerating to that speed and post it somewhere? I'd love to see it.

A shade under 95 in a Toyota Corolla. But I could go faster with the opportunity. Say... I-80 between 2:00 and 5:00 AM between just after Park City, UT, and Wendover, NV... THAT has got to be the straightest road in existence.

Corollas are not slouches and in the mid to late 80's there were models of that were sport cars. In fact the Corolla was raced by Toyota in a number of races and actually one a number of rally titles. They've turned into more of a Sedan now but my wifes '97 has absolutely no problem getting to a hundred and probably will top out around 125 or so.

My friend had a 95 Corolla CE with an auto and it was a real pain in the ass to get up to highway speeds. I know the new ones have VVT-i engines and some Corollas were pretty decent (but the sporty ones were more the exception). I don't know, we used to have a Toyota Sienna minivan and that even out accelerated my friend's Corolla.

110 in a Saturn SL1. Was shaking to all hell at that speed, I though the damn thing was going to fall apart. It could have gone faster, but I was going into a decent sized turn and didn't want to push it. It was also at noon, and a cop could have easily been around the corner. Not good.

Theres no way I would ever take a pic of my speedo when driving 120mph+. My car (1972 Datsun 240Z) is a handful with no power steering and a whole lotta lift commin from the front end due to lack of my aero kit. God i cant wait till next year when i can afford my aero kit!

Shaking at speed is almost always due to a need for alignment and wheel balance. I've never had a car that did anything but get smoother the faster you went when they were properly aligned and had good tires on them that were balanced well.

My dad's Malibu would always shake above 90 and when braking from speeds over 60. Taking it to Tire Kingdom for a full align/balance did help a lot, but it still did shake still when you hit it's max speed of 106.

115 on the "Detroit AutoBahn." i've heard of people going close to 200 MPH (probably not that fast) on I-696- with cops in full tow. that was several years ago... i've heard the state troopers are pretty strict these days.
oh... that was in a '77 Ford Grenada - the speedometer went up to 120 but it always max'd out at 115. great car... two doors, 37 feet long... back seat the size of texas... ;-)

The funny thing is, we've had to be careful of alligators on the road here...especially during gator mating season around the spring/summer months. They are also known to crawl out of the canals and into backyards, so you have to be careful with your children and small pets.

If it shakes when you hit the brakes then you have warped rotors and either need them turned or replaced. Sometimes bad calipers can create the same sensation. If a piston is sticking on a brake caliper then it over heats the rotor causing it to warp a little. The rotor isn't always damaged by this but to be on the safe side the calipers and rotors should both be looked at in this situation.

My 224 km/h was in Italy (Southern). I wouldn't try to break that (roughly 150 mph) in US, I'm sure I'd attract too many cops. :p

i've never gone over 75, and i've had my liscense for about three years now. there is just no reason to go over 90 on a public road. i never go more than 10 over the speed limit in any area. they have tracks for that. you people are going to kill someone and i am going to laugh.
(also, i don't make left turns across multi-lane traffic without a "left turn" arrow. i am afraid of hitting deer (since i already did), so i dont travel through rural areas at night. and i never risk trying to change or merge lanes if i can help it. trust me. it's better that way. just call me grandma. everybody does.)
but seriously, people, just take it easy. you can't outrun your crappy childhoods, your crappy presents, or your crappy futures, so don't risk hurting someone, or, more importantly, an historic landmark, on the way to see your therapist.

seriously, that's about what you sound like, reversed. i don't have issues with my childhood or anything, just because i like to have a little fun in my car. don't get huffy, you can kill people at 70 just as fast as at 90+. in fact, try slowing down to 30 on the highway and see how many you kill by being cautious...
