View Full Version : All Flat?

This CNet article (http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1006-200-5806403.html) and this MacUser UK article (http://www.macuser.co.uk/macsurfer/php3/openframe.php3?page=%2Fnewnews%2Fnewsmenu.php3) report that Apple may be phasing out CRT Displays in favor of Flat screen displays.
The Cupertino, Calif.-based company has been quietly telling dealers that bulky tube monitors will be phased out as it switches to sleeker flat-panel monitors, say distribution sources.

This would be another bad tactical error. For one, flat panels are too expensive for the average consumer. Second, most graphics people seem to say that LCDs lack qualities needed for best feedback of producion material. Third, with Apples custom output, how would one have to go about connecting a normal monitor? Lastly, if Apple sells alot of those 17" monitors when they sell a system, they may price them selfs out of a full sale or partial sale.

i have to agree. i can currently run down to my CompUSA and for around $450 get a decent 19" display. And I've done this in the past. I can't even think about buying a LCD at this point yet.
LCD for high-end machines (where its likely that publication corporations are footing the bill) is fine with me.
If a new quad G4 around the corner requires a LCD monitor, I will be very upset. The Macintosh was originally meant to be used by everyone. It was a utopian goal which is great. Apple still uses a single-button mouse because of usability. But to opt for a high-priced, albeit flashy technology would alienate a great many users. Not to mention the smaller schools in the education market.
- perhaps it's not as far reaching as we all might think.

Well, considering two things, First, LCD prices are dropping drastically, and second, Apple will have a standard monitor port with the ADC port on their cards, there isn't anything to worry about. Apple isn't going to make proprietary mistakes they have made in the past.

Ya right !

Have you seen at what price Apple sells it`s monitors?
499$ for a 17 inch...
Get rid of them, you will never sell one of those to someone with a budget. You can buy a 19 inch one for that price anywhere else.

Apples Monitors have always been more expensive. And they have always sold enough to keep them around.
Ya right what?

It will happen, but I didn't see it coming quite yet...
Apple's monitors have always been up there with the best when it comes to color reproduction, and, while being expensive, are preferred by many people and businesses.
Their flat screens are more and more accurate all the time, and are already better than most screens were a few years ago (color reproduction-wise).
