Anyone see this on engadget?

Sounds a bit odd to me - wonder what they're getting at...

That's an extremely vague rumor and seems like it could easily be started due to the Wifi rumor.

It sounded to me like Engadget was claiming that Apple was going to start some "service" based on the rumored WiFi functionality. I dunno - seems a bit unlikely to me, but I suppose they could tie it all into .Mac somehow?

I agree, it seems quite vague. Oh well, tomorrow's event will be here soon enough. :)

Generation MP3 (French) (http://www.generationmp3.com/index.php/2007/09/04/7166-the-circle-le-nouveau-concept-dapple-) offers a rumor that Apple will be launching some sort of Wi-fi service called 'The Circle' tomorrow.
Pocket-link (http://www.pocket-lint.co.uk/news/news.phtml/9951/10975/Apple-launch-The-Circle-Services.phtml) provides a translation, but there are very few details.

Hopefully its just a touch iPod with Wifi. Whatever it is (iPod, Circle iPhone Revision) it will be cool.

The Circle= At&T offer that enables EDGE. The iPod's firmware is the same, but when you buy the EDGE plan, AT&T unlocks the EDGE inside.... Soon to be hacked by yet another 16 year-old.:)

Don't know anything about EDGE, but can't there be something to make sure the EDGE can only be used with AT&T?

Yeah, it's going on right now inside of all of the iPhones. You can only connect to AT&T because of SIM cards, so I think that is what might be inside of the new iPods. You can activate the SIM card inside of the iPod if you want. If not, just stick with wifi.:D

If there is something to this rumor I hope "The Circle" is not what it will be called. Im sorry but "The Circle" sounds like some bad porn or worse. Apple fans would never hear the end of that one...

And what about "Le Cercle", huh? :P Hey, there is no way on a cold day in hell that Apple will put a SIM card in an iPod! Not for the price of the current models at least (and on top of the expected add-ons)

True, but it's the only way I could think of putting EDGE on an iPod.

Perhaps you nailed it - instead of signing up The Beatles, Apple is announcing that they're picking up the entire back catalogue of The Circle Jerks.

This sounds very intriguing to me, some people are indicating it could be content generated by Apple - that would be weird and a wonderful kick in the arse to the Tv companies. Others say it could be sharing a la Zune or similar... as I said, intriguing....
Content sharing, meh.
"The Circle" would be a nice name for a recording label, however, which has also been rumored. Like, "You want to be part of The Circle?"

Nope - not this time. I have cash from a bonus I received at work. Should the product come in at less than the bonus ($400) I can buy. Otherwise, I save and wait...

The Circle
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
For other uses, see The Circle (disambiguation).
The Circle is a peer-to-peer distributed file system written mainly in Python. It is based on the Chord distributed hash table (DHT).
It supports file sharing, instant messaging with buddy lists, the Internet relay chat model of sending a message to a channel, and a personalized, trust-based news service.
More unusually, it supports:
* finding and sending messages to people who aren't currently online;
* a proxy for the Debian Advanced Packaging Tool system; and
* a probabilistic mechanism for sharing common keys between nodes, something not present in all DHT implementations.
Its DHT implementation is vulnerable to denial of service attacks.
From The Circle homepage:
The Circle is a scalable decentralized peer to peer application.... There's no central authority running the show. Which means no entry taxes, no one booting you off the network, and (in theory) no weak point which can break the whole system. As long is there's one Circle peer running, anywhere in the world, there's still a network. Circle does not try to provide anonymity, which allows it to be much more scalable than gnutella.
The Circle currently runs on Linux, BSD, Windows, and Mac OS X.

Does anyone else think this was just a case of lost in translation (or 'Chinese Whisper' effect)?
How about 'The Circle' being a reference to a logo… Starbucks?!
(i.e. the new iTunes Wi-Fi store ~ Starbucks partnership for iPod touch / iPhone)

I think after the announcement by Apple of the new iTunes purchase program at select Starbucks stores, the Circle rumor was true. The rumor tied a WiFi announcement to Apple yesterday. The Circle must have been an Apple code name for the Starbucks project. Just look at the Starbucks logo and what do you have, a circle! :)

Sorry, but when I think of "Circle" and "video", the first thing that pops into my head is Nate Burr's cult-famous video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O-tkqpHnxTI).

You guys are the lamest group of presumptuous, gossipy nerds I've ever seen in ANY Mac-themed forum. :D Thanks for reminding me why I've been loving the Mac and hating its users since 1988. ;)
