Macbook to HD TV (hdmi)

Greetings,

I have a Samsung LE40R51BX 40" Rome LCD TV High-Def Ready TV linked here.

I want to link my Mac Book to it to watch HD movies etc...

Can some one tell me exactly what cable(s) i need as some one was talking about getting a mini DVI to HDMI but i cant see a cable that does it ?

Id really appreciate a response as i have a ton of hd movies to watch.

Hi,

I have the Samsung M87 🙂

Basically, i connect my macbook to the HDTV using the

DVI -> HDMI adpater which i bought from the Apple Store
then plug a regular HDMI -> HDMI cable from the adapter to the TV.

You'll also want sound, so an audio connection from your macbooks headphone port to the audio IN into the TV (you can get a 3.5mm headphone jack to 2 phono cable which does this for a couple of quid)

And that should do it 🙂

isn't the output on the Mac Book Mini DVI ?
Do i need to get a mini-DVI to DVI Converter, then do as you instructed ?

check the picture i just took to confirm if poss mate...

Well, Mini-DVI -> DVI, DVI -> HDMI, HDMI ----> HDMI should work, but its far from tidy!

I don't think Mini-DVI to HDMI exists, but if you can find it, that would be what you'd want.

The other option would be Mini-DVI to video adapter (Scart and Composite). But obviously with a reduction in quality.

Remember that sound will not be carried over the HDMI connection, you will need to deal with that separately.

I tried connecting the 3.5mm headphone cable to the 2 phono cables but still do not receive sound from my TV. do i need to adjust the sound settings in my mac book?
 
If you have more than one HDMI port on the TV, sometimes you have to plug into a specific one for the audio inputs to work with it. Mine works on HDMI1 only.

Not sure if it's the same issue for you.
 
I did this by using a mini-displayport to HDMI cable. I don't believe he mentioned how old his macbook is?

I have the same question as the OP above. I have a white MacBook purchased in early-mid 2008. I have the mini display port (at least I think) seen here:

I'd like to buy a TV which doesn't have VGA input, so I need to be able to connect my MacBook to it with another adapter. Is there a mini display port to HDMI adapter? Or perhaps a better question is how do I know if my MacBook supports mini display port to HDMI adapters?

you could do this: Buy the adapter that lets you connect a DVI cable, then get a DVI to HDMI cable. I've done that without issue.

No, that's mini-DVI.

Demcee must have an '08>= macbook if they're using mDP (which Apple began using on the 2008 unibody macbook).

That makes this thread relevant to you, read the responses relevant to HDMI if that's what you want - you didn't mention what inputs your TV has.

The TV I want has HDMI input. It doesn't have VGA input. I don't want to get it until I'm positive I can connect my MacBook to it. Thanks.

Then buy a mini-DVI to HDMI lead like this.

Thanks. I was mainly nervous that my MacBook's video card wouldn't be able to support HDMI out. You can understand my hesitation--buying a TV with only HDMI input support--when I've only used VGA output.

That's understandable. It's just the connector you need to worry about; if your mac can output the right resolution to the video port, you just need to make sure the connector cable (in this case mini-DVi to HDMI) wont become a bottleneck for that (according to amazon reviews that's not the case).

Thanks again. I found some good reviews here where people with 2007 and 2008 MacBooks have no issues getting video output to their HDTVs. That's the last bit of confirmation I needed! Thanks!
