Hi all,
Dropped my ibook G4 12" - out of warantee

It starts ok, but then after 10 seconds, it goes to sleep.

when I wake it up, pressing the space bar, it comes to life, but with no backlighting on the screen.

After 5 seconds, it then goes back to sleep again, and again and again...etc.

any ideas before I take it in and spend lots of money fixing it?

Regards, Nils.

Sounds like a pretty bad hardware failure there. Lesson learned - don't drop your iBook! If it keeps going to sleep, then it's pretty much blammed any chance of fixing it in software, so it's more likely to be a hardware issue.

Protip: don't pay more than necessary for a repair and just write the whole thing off to bad practice. I have heard some horror stories of repairs that are more than the product is worth, so put the money toward a new Macbook instead and make sure you don't drop it!

If you can get the data off the drive somehow using a USB to IDE cable and plug it into another machine or plug it into a powermac using a 2.5" to 3.5" convertor cable, do that.
