I had no idea that they'd do this.
I paid what I thought was fair for the iPhone in July. I've been amazed by it, and didn't think I could be happier.
Now they're giving me $100 for no real reason, and I'm ok with that. I'll be using it for Leopard or if they ever put out a Mini with a mid-range Nvidia graphics chip. I don't need much, but I need better than the Intel.

anybody who is not happy is spoiled.
WAKE UP, APPLE JUST GAVE YOU $100 FOR NO REASON.
WOW, never heard so many people whine about a company lowering the price on a product, scared you are going to loose to elitists of your phone?

Yeah, I'm happy with the $100 credit. I'm gonna use it on an iMac. I have no complaints.

I don't care at all.
But I wonder if the unhappy ones in this poll wanted to get a bigger refund or if they wanted others to get less.

You're right. Apple should never have given a refund. They had no reason to.

If anybody is unhappy, oh well sucks for you. There are not many companies that after they do a price drop, turn to the customers that purchased before and give them some thing back. That is just nice of Apple, I am happy with it, it rocks.

This poll is badly constructed.
It applies to ALL Apple customers because now the company will not be so aggresive in future price cuts. Thanks, complainers!

I had expected a price drop 6 months after the introduction of the iPhone, so $200 drop after only 2 months was a shock. But angry? I don't think so.
I bought the original iPod in November 2001 for $399 with 5 GB. Am I expected to scream and stamp my feet now that I can get an iPod with video and 160GB for the same price? I don't think so.
It's ridiculous to demand the latest technology at what the price might be sometime in the future. And it is equally asinine to demand a refund from the manufacturer when their products drop in price. I think Americans are so accustomed to getting something for nothing that we get pissy when things are not given to us for free.
I'm quite happy with my $100 Apple store credit. It will take some of the tax bite off my new MBP when Leopard comes out.
Anyone upset with Apple should go out and buy themselves a Zune. Then see how well M$ treats you.

because it is not true yet!
My father-in-law wanted an iPhone about a month ago so we went to the Apple Store and bought one for $600. He said he'd get my wife (his daughter, capische?) on for her birthday which is 9/9, so we went back to the store, receipt and overpriced iPhone in hand, and wanted the $100 store credit Steve promised.
We got a bunch of bureaucratic BS about how they don't know EXACTLY how we should get the credit, so we ended up paying full freight for her phone.
Seriously, they can't figure out how to give away $100? C'mon.

Did you read the letter? Steve didn't promise anything until next week. Be happy you're getting anything. Some of you have entitlement issues...

I'm happy, it'll pay for most of the cost of leopard, or more than a little bit of the cost of a Mini if I get one.

my dad had read an article to me when the iphone first came out, that they were testing it out on the hard-core true believers and that they had planned to lower the price before xmas time. id be fvc%n pissed off if i had bought one when they first came out [read: if i could have afforded one & would work with my network]. i think that was crummy how they treated the most devout. i think, esp since it is an in store credit as opposed to refund, that they should have offered more $$$ - perhaps another 100 or so.

I'm relatively unsympathetic and have been here myself. I bought the brand new iPod Photo 60Gb, back in the day. It was $599, for about a month, then dropped $200 JUST like this. There was no outrage or refund or anything. Hey, that's life. It's the cost of being on the cutting edge, and frankly part of the reason why I didn't leap on the iPhone day 1. I think this whole situation is simply because of the cross-platform, higher profile, big media nature of the iPhone launch. I don't begrudge anyone, but they sure as heck better not be moaning to anyone. They knew the risks, and are absurdly lucky.
My opinion on Apple's overall plan is this. Launch the product high, but in the general zone. Hey, $400 for a smart phone is the norm, without being a cool Apple with iPod function. They didn't know if it would be a small market, high tag item or not. Turns out it's a huge hit with the volume to bring the price down, so they did. The media attention backfired a bit and made this necessary. I think it's a crock.

I said "pleased." I appreciate the credit, which will go towards my next laptop purchase (probably in January), but did not need it. If I wasn't willing to pay $600 for the iPhone, I wouldn't have done so.
The last time this happened, it was a $200 check for being an early adopter of Aperture. The circumstances were very, very different. In that case, Aperture 1.0 was a shoddy, almost unusable initial release that had just been updated and had its price lowered as a response to a strong new product in the marketplace. The iPhone, by contrast, did everything it was supposed to do quite well.

There needs to be an option between "pleased" and "unhappy" other than "don't care". I'm pleased with the store credit, but I'm still a bit disturbed by the whole price drop/anger/credit debacle. The iPhone should have been $399 to begin with.

Supply and Demand people. There is a finite supply of iphones, because of initial ramping up, and hedging. The cost has to be high, it is an Apple. Just like Nordstroms and BMW, if it was cheap you would not have bought it.
Mr. Jobs did his job brilliantly and was able to afford quite a few Bentley/BMW's now, just off the smart phone. He is happy as all get out, and has that Cali/Bud feeling of giving back. Now that smacks the American as an initial rape of phanboys (kinda like the Catholic church's own male dominated society).
But not really as the latter boy's choir are innocent lambs and the formers phanboy's are wanting the best and prettiest. Plus, you who bought into it, can afford it. Now, you can upgrade to Leopard for about $80, while I pay a c-note more. Oh, and I don't have a fancy new phone either!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, but live on the largest Caribbean Island.

Jobs offers early Apple Lisa owners US$7K Store Credit this from QuickJump:p
Following his recent move to offer early iPhone buyers some well-deserved in-store credit, Steve Jobs has also made plans to reimburse those who bought the Apple Lisa a year before the cheaper, more economical Macintosh was released. And it's not just US$ 100 per buyer we're talking about here, but US$ 7000. That's a lot of money for buying something in advance 24 years ago.
A lot of money indeed, but also quite justified. Apple released the Lisa in January of 1983, at around US$ 9,995. That's around ten grand - and during those times, ten grand was a lot.
It didn't help much that the Macintosh was released a year later, at the considerably lower price of US$ 2,945 - almost a third of what the Lisa sold for a pop. With the Macintosh offering the same features in a more affordable package, a lot of Lisa owners felt disappointed - who wouldn't?
It seems, though, that Steve had been feeling bad about those who bought the Lisa early, and thus aims to patch things up. His statement about the matter, verbatim:
I've felt bad about people who bought the Lisa for a long time. Anybody who bought one of the first Apple Lisas really got screwed. Now that we've got some cash, I think it's about time we made it right.
While the gesture is a bit overdue, it's always better late than never, right? To claim the refund, Apple Lisa owners merely have to bring in an original receipt that proves that they bought the Apple Lisa at its year of release, as well as proof of purchase from the Apple Lisa's box. Then it's just a matter of thinking about how one can spend US$ 7000 on the most recent Apple gadgets. iPhones for everybody!

I am pleased although I think they should have refunded the entire 200 for people who bought it the day before or the week before (or possibly users who have not opened the box yet)

Not happy at all! Apple should have not given ANY rebate to early iPhone buyers. Period.
Thanks to all the crybabies who don't understand how the electronics economy works, Apple will likely never so dramatically cut prices on any of their products in the future.

I still think the credit should have been 200$ considering the price dropped so soon after. Either that or no price drop.
Honestly though I can't complain because the price drop is the thing that made me get my iPhone, but logically speaking 100$ is only halfway there to making you fully recompensated considering it was dropped after only 2 months.
Anyhow I guess most people probably wont mind considering that they got 100$ back for no reason other than that other customers can now pay less for the phone.

I'm even more unhappy cuz I am just now hearing about this. How was everyone notified? I mean apple didn't seem to have a problem contacting me to do their surveys.
