I'm wondering when we're likely to see a genuine update to the Macbook. In particular, some kind of update from the GMA950 graphics....like say to Intels current GMA3100.
Is this likely? Likely this year?

There is lots of talk about an update soon. I hope so because I am holding off on buying a macbook for my wife until next month to see if an update happens. Right now she is using my MBP SR and I want it back!!! I have been using a windows notebook.....and it suxs!

Honestly, there are about 50,000 other posters who have been asking this question since May, and the answer still remains the same: no one knows for sure. Speculation has it that a new macbook might be around sometime in October/November, as this fits nicely with the six month update cycle of the macbook, and it's before Christmas.
As for the GMA 3100...the macbook has always been crippled in that regard, so don't bank on it:(
PS, do a search for your question first, and then create a thread. It gives you more insight and you'll be able to see a broader set of opinions because not as many people are likely to post a reply to your new thread.

It will handle fine. Apple makes its OS so that it can work on older computers. Heck, G4s from a few years ago will probably handle it ok. The current macbooks will have no problems.

It'll run, but don't count on the Quartz effects running smoothly.

effects that required core image, like the ripple effect on dashboard, ran fine on my white macbook, but it wouldn't do it smoothly when it was connected to an external display. coverflow also ran very choppy when hooked up to the external, so i replaced my macbook with a mbp.

So it's essentially the portion of the OS that handles external displays and the like? Macbooks still have issues with this? I remember the iBooks used to be severly limited when it came to displays, but I thought Apple had done a better job with the macbooks. I guess not.

Apple now has the product pipeline basically configured for the balance of the year. They are now having to ramp production to meet the needs for holiday sales. A very remote chance that the Mac Pro might see an update, although very unlikely. As far as the current MacBook & MacBook Pro, your looking at it until an update comes out in '08.

the MacBook is a great machine. Coverflow and the ripple effect work perfectly fine on my MacBook even with an external display. The macbookd will have no problem running leopard, and the c2d's are going to run it even better because they will use 64 bit instead of the cd's running at 32 bit.

So then this^^^ won't be a problem? I'm just trying to get a feel for this. Everyone is always so paranoid about new OSs coming out, but Apple has usually done pretty well in terms of keeping people happy. It's not like a two month old machine will be unusable cough Vista cough.

Never said it would be a problem - just said the quartz effects won't run as smoothly.
It'll run OS perfectly. The MacBook's weak point is its graphics, so you can't count on it being able to run Leopard's fancy transitions perfectly smoothly.
If 100% smooth eye candy doesn't bother you, then folk have nothing to worry about running Leopard on a MacBook.

Sort of how the old iBooks couldn't handle the ripple effect on Dashboard when Tiger came out eh? Either way, it won't bother me, I've got a mbp:cool:

Fortunately I didn't have to give my macbook away yet.
I'm not so sure if the Macbooks will see an update soon.
If I remember correctly they have been updated shortly before the iMacs havent they?
And the GMA 950 really is more powerful than most people think.

I just bought a MacBook, so I am hoping they won't be updated. At the same time, I will live if they are. If they follow Apple's new design concepts, they won't be nearly as good looking as the current ones anyway.

Yes. It seems strange that they are alienating white so quickly. I understand that there are still white accents, but it looks odd.
I'll probably buy one of the older white iPods now ... I sure as hell don't need 80GB and they look nicer.

Sure the white is classic, but the look has become a bit aged. White isn't as sleek or "modern" as silver/black. Though I too found it interesting that this new iPod is the first to not have white; I guess black was selling more by too much of a margin.

I don't think it is that white does not look modern. I think it is oversaturation; ever since Apple popularized it, many companies have been copying the design (e.g. Nintendo).

That's only half the case. Ever since the black iPod became an option, people have been buying up that model and leaving the white one behind. Personally, I still like the old white iPod (my old 4th Gen still looks good to me, even if I mostly use my Nano now), but when it comes to computers, the color doesn't look as good to me. I guess it's because black makes things look slimmer while white doesn't.
I can't think of another company other than Nintendo that has a white product (which sells well, a white Zune doesn't quite count since almost no one buys a Zune). Do you know of any other popular products that are making use of white?

You mean PSP right? And this an upcoming product, not a currently successful one. The PSP for now has been black. I think overall, the trend has been to offer products that are sleek and stylish, which usually means that black and silver win out. I guess we'll see how well this white PSP does.

No, I mean PS2. :) I lost my PS2 so I am excited about it!
I think black and white are sleek and stylish. I think the BlackBook is beautiful, but white was my preference. Of course I can differentiate between "what I like" and "what is good". However, I don't like silver unless it's jewelry. :) I think silver electronics are a little tacky looking.

How'd you lose a PS2? It's not exactly something you take with you everywhere like an iPod. Do you mean lost in the sense that it broke or that someone stole it?
Also, kindly post a link of the white PS2. Sony doesn't seem to be acknowledging it.

How is the white PSP an upcoming product? And the white PSP was a huge success - was more popular than the black when it came out for some reason.

White isn't my favourite colour. I think different colors work for different things. I think white is nice for electronics. I'm really into fashion, which is why these sorts of things matter to me.

No, I meant that the white PS2 is still an upcoming product (the link Deuz Augustine supplied said November). My original comment was about the success of white prodcuts. In the electronics industry, they usually are rare; black and silver are the dominant colors.
Also, supply some evidence for the white PSP being more popular. I'm having a hard time accepting that one without some proof.

My argument towards white is not about, "I think white is better than everything else!" I just find it odd for Apple to alienate a large group of people who have been clearly won over by the white.

You said the white PSP was an upcoming product and put in brackets "the PS2 still fits this category". Try being clearer.
And the sales of white v black is from experience - where I work we were out of stock of white PSP's constantly and customers first choice was usually always white.

That's entirely anecdotal evidence. You are one sales rep out of millions. Your eyes and ears aren't reliable evidence of product success. If you had a report on Sony's sales of the PSP, I would take that as a good indicator of which one was more popular. Also, did it ever occur to you that the white PSP was ordered in much fewer numbers? If your shop only ordered 1 white PSP for every 4 black ones, then odds are that the white one would sell out faster even if the sales of the black one were three times higher. Get a report, story, article, anything empircal, which states that the white PSP sold better, and then you have a case to say that the white is more popular.

I may be one sales rep out of millions, but the company I work for employs people all across the UK. Stock figures for the company showed that the white PSP sales were up and the black PSP sales were down.
And we ordered more white PSP's than black because it was a new product - and generally people want the newest thing, even if it is just the same. It makes your PSP cooler and better if you have a new white version compared to the original black version.
Personal experience, no need to get ratty about it ;)

The crux of the issue remains. You are still one of many sales reps, in a secondary market (for Sony, I consider Japan and the US as primary markets because of the volume of prodcut that is sold there). Unless you are an upper level manager who happens to have sales figures for your company, competitors in the UK, sellers in the US, sellers in Japan, and sellers in Canada and the rest of Western Europe, your testimony is useless. Even if I take on faith (which I don't) that your company sold more white PSPs than black PSPs, I still have no relevant data for other UK resellers or for the rest of the world. You also don't have a time frame for these sales. Was it a week, two weeks, a month, six months? This is why we need more official information before we can accept the statement of "the white is more popular."
And the white PSP was a huge success - was more popular than the black when it came out for some reason.

Your first post made it seem like hard fact. In truth, you're basing this on your perceptions. I'm not being "ratty," I'm trying to make sure we base our discussion on facts. Unless you have actual data, there's no point in continuing this line of discussion.

I'll say it again, from personal experience, I found customers wanted the white PSP more than the black PSP. Regardless of the rest of the world, that does not change the fact that I personally sold more white PSP's and had more requests for it than black.
Accept that or not, I don't give two craps mate. You are making a debate out of nothing. Your signature is really ironic considering the input you've put in this thread - not knowing what Quartz is, and not even knowing that a white PSP has been released a long time ago.
Back on topic now if you please (no hard feelings eh?).
The main reason I spent the extra dough for my MBP is I wanted the GPU for games and other uses; the MB simply didn't suit my needs. I'd love a BlackBook with a decent GPU though...I have a soft spot for the BlackBook.

I too like the blackbook, but there were two additional things which bothered me about it. 1) no matte option. I like matte screens; glossy ones produce too much glare for me. 2) the keyboard felt awkward. I spent plenty of time with the macbook keyboard (school had a set we used from time to time. I logged a good twenty hours using the macbooks before I had made up my mind about the keyboard), and I found it to be very uncomfortable. The mbp keyboard is leagues ahead in my opinion.
