iPod 3g iPod nano included dock is useless?

There's a slot on the bottom of the dock which I assume the connector goes through. However, the connector is slightly wider than the slot. What exactly does that plastic cradle do?
 
the ipod nano doesn't include a dock. what you're referring to is possibly the dock adapter.
