Noob external display?

If I use my MBP with an external display, do I set up the external as a desktop mirror in the "Display" section of System Preferences or will it mirror the MBP automatically?
 
On the powerbook (i.e. the older version of the macbookpro) one of the function buttons (F7 on my powerbook) will switch back and forth between monitor mirroring and monitor spanning.
