Shouldnt there be an option for ' installs custom ringtones, but doesnt buy'
I think a lot of people would be in this category, wanting custom ringtones but not prepared to pay for them.

eg I often bluetooth music files from my mac to my nokia to use as ringtones, they are usually clips of songs from my CD collection.

I set a custom ringtone (the piano intro for Tori Amos' Silent All These Years) for my ROKR (yes, I still own a ROKR), and have another as an alarm (Asheru's intro for the Boondocks cartoon). It's not as easy as it should be, but it was made free thanks to Audacity/QT Pro and iTunes. I have no intention of paying for one if work gets me that BlackBerry they keep saying they're going to, and probably wouldn't if they don't and I get an iPhone. I don't like paying twice for something like this.

"Do you want grape or strawberry jelly?"

"Yes".

While technically true, it doesn't add useful information. A yes/no would be the expected results for a general "do you use custom ringtons", but having a "or" in the question implies picking one or the other, especially since buying implies installing. So, like many people I suspect, I came in here intending to say "install", and intend to never, ever buy a ringtone.

(Which, in itself is all sorts of annoying. Soon, the RIAA will charge me because I have a song stuck in my head)

I seem to be one of the lucky ones in this regard. My phone (Moto v557, Cingular) is decidedly un-crippled. I can add new ringtones for free, as easy as dragging them into the "Sounds" folder I access via Bluetooth.

I see I'm not the first to see that the question doesn't make any sense.

I don't buy ringtones but I do install them. I make my own and just transfer them through bt to my moto. I wouldn't pay for a ringtone. I might buy a song that I like and then make it into a ringtone, but I wouldn't buy a ringtone.

I put them on with mega super duper ease on my RAZR. I don't deal with crappy novelty things - I'll use a nifty short track by a band, my current one is Nancy Boy Fairy Eyes by Cassetteboy. 30 seconds long, no vocals, perfect!

I would never buy a ringtone. If that was the only option then I'd just stick to the bog standard "ring" tone.

I bought one from the iTunes Store about 60% "just to test," and about 40% because it's a song that is a DRM-ed purchase, that I kind of had been wanting as a ringtone.

I have three others that I have created myself from iTunes Plus or CD-rip songs. On my old Nokia and Motorola, I just Bluetooth them over.

Currently, I edit songs via Audacity and upload via bluetooth to my Razr.

If I had an iPhone, and I could find a song that I like/wanted, I wouldn't mind paying for it. However, in the last 5 years, I have only used 4 custom ringtones on any phone I had, and I only paid for one. I don't mind paying a buck for a ringtone that I will use for a full year.

I totally agree with others saying that the poll would be far more interesting if the question was, 'Do you add custom ring tones to your phone?' and the options were, for example:

1. Yes, only free ones I make or download.
2. Yes, both free and non-free.
3. No
4. I don't own a mobile/cell phone.

My answer would be a firm choice 1. The ringtone makers have been coining it in for years, and the fact that Apple are making us pay TWICE is quite frankly, embarrassing. Charge maybe for songs we have ripped, but for ones we have already paid for, I dont think so. That's just p***ing everyone off right now.

9.5%? That means there's a large non-U.S. contingent. U.S. mobile ownership is only at about 75% of adults. (Although I have heard of someone who bought an iPhone for their freakin' six year old. Ridiculous!)

You're missing the point of the poll. It isn't about the details of how one gets a ringtone, it's simply about whether one gets ringtones. The "I don't own a mobile phone" option is simply there for those who are saying, "I can't have it either way." Granted, I would have liked a more detailed poll as well, but apparently, that's not what Arn was after.

The problem is how he phrased it. It would have made more sense to put:
Do you use ringtones (bought or custom)?

Yeah, I can see that. The poll title could have been better done.

well... add to that the fact that almost everyone on here is a tech-head... or interested in technology...

I never have and never will pay for a ringtone. I make interesting noises on my computer then put them on.

99% of the time my phone's on vibrate anyway. Who needs to know my phone's going off other than me?!

I have to agree with the others...

When I clicked on the poll, I expected to be choosing between buying ringtones, creating your own, and don't use custom ringtones or don't own a cell phone.

When I saw "yes" and "no" I was like... what... they screwed up the poll... and then realized that it was just horrible phrasing.

Yes, I do buy or install custom ringtones. :p

Mine is a simple, one-word answer.

No.

I don't own an iPhone (the reasons for this can be found in posts by me located within other threads), and if I did I would have a real problem spending money on a song and then spending another song fee for the priviledge of using part of it as a ring tone.

In my experience, the RAZR, despite many faults, got at least that much right.

C 'est la vie.

I don't own a phone.

I used to have one back in 2001, but all I ever used it for was to call the bank to find out how much money was in my account, until I finally realized there would be more money in my account if I didn't have the phone.

After that I had a landline for $11.95/month (Local service), but once I got DSL I never bothered to install a filter to hook a phone back up to it.

Right now I don't have any phone at all, and don't miss them one bit. My DSL line still has a phone number associated with it that I use when filling out forms and such.

Phones are a tool of oppression. They make you slaves, and endanger lives (driving while talking on a phone). My biggest gripe with them though, is that the phone companies simply are not competing with one another. There is no $15-$20/month service for unlimited local calling (all that I need), and it doesn't matter how many damn features a phone has when the phone company is just going to charge you for using every damn one!
