Hi all,
looking to get an iPhone but would like to run dual sim has anybody had any experience of unlocking it and getting a sim that can cover two different carriers?
The link below shows an unlock with dual sim but would like to hear if anybody's already done this as i'd like to avoid having to manually swap the sims or carrying two phones.
http://cgi.ebay.com/Turbo-DUAL-SIM-for-iPHONE-100-FULL-UNLOCK-easy-to-do_W0QQitemZ270166298847QQihZ017QQcategoryZ43312QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Thanks in advance,

With the release of the next firmware imminent, I have a question about the unlocking process:
I've downloaded the current firmware to my computer. After this new firmware is launched tomorrow, or whenever, will I still be able to upload the firmware I have downloaded to my computer to the iPhone so I can unlock it? I don't care about any of the new features...
Just quoting myself to see if anyone has an answer...:confused:

Just don't update to the new firmware and you have no problems. And/or wait and then do it once the hacks are updated.
I don't think Apple is going to lose any sleep over unlocked IPhones. They will do a minimum block to demonstrate to ATT that they are doing something but that is it, IMO.

The problem is I don't have the phone yet and won't until next week. I'd like to just use the current firmware instead of updating, but I don't know if that's possible...:confused:

Good Info For UK O2 CUSTOMERS WHO THINK THEY CAN USE A LOCKED USA IPHONE
Join Date: Feb 2006
Can an iPhone bought in the US be activated in the UK or Germany?
I'm thinking of buying an iPhone when I got to the States to visit my mom. If I buy one there, can I bring it back to London and activate it with O2 here?
I'm NOT talking about unlocking the sim. I'm asking if an iPhone bought anywhere in the world can be activated with any of Apple's cellular providers in their respective countries.

Good question. But as long as the Euro iPhones are not out no one knows if they have the same firmware (same baseband?).

Of course it won't, yor IMEI number on the phone is locked to the carrier, the agreement between apple and the carrier is that the phone always stayed locked to the carrier.

Sorry this might be a dumb question, but if the IMEI matters, how do the unlocks work currently? The IMEI stays the same. Will O2 keep a list of IMEI numbers and restrict devices accordingly?

Wouldn't that mean the current unlock hacks are changing the IMEI numbers?
I think Apple will have a unified firmware, which means all iPhones will run the same baseband firmware too.

So then,the question still stands...
If i buy an american iphone, put in my pay monthly uk sim card, without unlocking the phone, will it work?
Heres the scenario...
Buy USA Iphone tomorrow
Open it in UK.
Attach iphone to mac.
Update firmware to 1.1.1(when available)
Put UK o2 contacrt sim card in
Activate with Itunes
Hey Presto????????
If someone with a definitive answer to any of these steps could help out,id be grateful because some people are saying the IMEI in the American phone is unique to Apple/AT&T hook up,and that the UK model would have a different IMEI signifying the Apple/O2 deal.So would i have to unlock the phone for the features to work,or would i be able now to open the box,pop the sim card in and all is good, and if not,why not?
Im not a techy guy, although i have a basic knowledge, but nobody seems to have a definitive answer to the above scenraio, only a solution using the unlock solution, which i dont want to do because i dont want to risk the phone with a 1.1.1 update iminent.
Sorry to drone on,but can anyone give a definitive answer please.
Cheers

I doubt it.
The iPhone is not out in the UK yet and there can be no guarantees that it will be easily unlocked with whatever firmware Apple puts on it.
Just wait for the free version.

if IMEI is unique to the device, surely if apple wanted to stop people taking the phone off contract to another carrier, they could check between them whether an IMEI number was not registered to at&t they can blacklist it from use.
they could have actually blacklisted all IMEI numbers until iTunes activates it on at&t.
Does anyone know how the IMEI numbers will affect anything going foward, as already asked, im using a US phone unlocked in UK. surely at&t know that my IMEI isnt in use with them, they could (whether it was legal for them to do so) blacklist it.
tbh i dont think apple really know how widespread the unlocking is...yet, hence stevies blank look on the UK announcement.
another thing to check is on the next firmware, when testing, Apple could be sneaky on this one and delay the fix for the unlocking i.e release new firmware, someone tests it on an unlocked phone, all is well and phone still unlocked, 2 weeks down the line when everyone has upgraded firmware, and boom :) the fix to lock the phone comes into play.
i think ill leave firmware updates until someone confirms what exactly they contain if thats at all possible.

I have unlocked 4 iphone so far using the iunlock GUI, the iphone are using both ROGER and FIDO sim card in Canada and I can confirm that the voice mail work in ROGER sim card iphone, my friend accidently hit the voice mail button on the iphone after I unlocked it for her and it takes straight into the ROGER voicemail and asked her to input her password and she could check her voice mail from there. I guess ROGER and AT&T must use the same number for the voicemail button...:)

This morning I decided to try the hack one more time, but I can't even restore the phone at all - with a combination of 1011 errors from iTunes or the 'SIM Not Installed' message there too.
I believe it is a hardware issue (the phone can't ready any SIM card I put in). All other occurrences of 'Unknown IMEI and Unknown ICCID' issues I can find result in a replacement SIM or replacement iPhone.
Sad to give it back, but hopefully won't have these problems with a UK purchased iPhone (which at least I can get replaced quickly)... Sigh...
We had this exact same issue (unknown sim, unknow imei) after trying to unlock. The iphone sat on the mantle for several days until we figured out the "hard reset" feature--it was so fubar'd that we couldn't run a restore because itunes wouldn't touch it. It was immensely frustrating because we'd been using it on our wi-fi network as a portable browser/email client/ipod/photo viewer and then we lost all functionality after running the anysim unlock.
Open itunes on your computer. Don't connect your phone to your computer, but do attach the dock to the bottom of the phone. Hold down the "Home" button for a few seconds. Keep holding it down while you plug in the USB to your computer. Keep holding it down until itunes sees it and starts the software reset. It will take over and walk you through it and when it's done, your phone will be in the same state it was when it came out of the box. Then you can start all over again!
FYI, even in the very screwed up no sim/imei state, you can still ssh into the iphone to recover your data. Be sure to ssh in as root@[iphoneipaddress].
Out of all the tutorials we read, the most helpful (imo) was http://iphone.unlock.no/new.htm but they neglected to mention that you'll have to reboot and then run jailbreak even after the unlocking tutorial before an invalid sim error will go away.
Good luck!

Succsess!!!
A few hours with the Modmyphone methode, and my iPhone runs on a 3 year old Vodafone Germany Sim Card. Also, my YouTube still works....
The biggest problem was to set up a working WIFI here during my holliday trip in the US, but a quick visite to the Apple Store and an AirportExpress purchase later, I am up and running and very happy :-)))))

I finally got mine unlocked.
This would not work for me: http://modmyiphone.com/wiki/index.php/IPhone_unlock_OS_X_Part_1
I don't see anyone here who had it work. I tried others.
Anysim would not work.
Finally I tried this:http://iphone.unlock.no/ and it worked. I got an error on the second from the last step, but decided to move on and try the sim. Working fine with T-Mobile (except YouTube).
Update: The volume is very low on the phone. Looking for a fix...
Update2: OK. I'm an idiot. I left the plastic screen on the phone and it was blocking the receiver ear piece. I haven't made or received too many calls today, but I am happy now!
Now watch this and replace "Comcast Digital Voice" in your mind with the word "iPhone" (http://youtube.com/watch?v=rj4CeTglmI0). That's me.

Apple has announced a new Firmware to be released this week.
For me, as an international user, there are many features, that are very desirable. Such as Localized Keypad, Edge on/off controll and Language typing support for other languages. God, the T9 is a bitch typing in my language and having the english correction partially sucks.
But it is better than not having an iPhone at all!!!!
Any hope, that we "unlocked ones" will get a way to upgrade the new FW and stay unlocked????

No upgrade for me until the other guinea pigs figure it out. I can do without the wireless iTunes store (I have no EDGE access anyway) and I don't miss any features I don't have yet. I wouldn't even try locking the phone until that is proven as a workaround to the update.
Chill. Apple is just trying to scare us.

I can't get any internet programs to work at all. No access to email or anything else. I don't have an IP on the phone neither.

There is an E next to the T-Mobile name at the top of the screen. How can I get the internet to work without calling T-Mobile and switching my data plan??

The "E" is for Edge. It means your phone is not connected to a wireless network. Mine did that too, the first time. Many do-overs later, the wifi was working. Now, even youtube works and I did nothing to fix it (except maybe power off the phone once or twice to get my names off the SIM).
Make sure your wireless network will allow your phone on (number of users, pw, etc.). Good luck.

Using EDGE on the iPhone w/ the SK3 Data Plan to my knowledge isn't possible because all of the data goes through Dangers servers which only allow sidekicks. You've got to call T-Mo and replace your SK3 plan w/ Total Internet which is the same price as the plan you're on.

Hi all,
after a few days with my hacked iPhone (I am running it currently during my hollidays here in the US with an AT&T Pay as you Go Card) I have found one major issue when it comes to controlling content on the iPhone.
At first, I was not able to drag and drop Music Files from my activating MacBook to the iPhone. I overcame this, by making a special iPhone Playlist and Synced it to the iPhone. All music is on there now :)
But I have no controll over Podcast content at all. I can listen to all podcasts, but they never get deleted when listened to from the phone. I am also not able to manually highlite and delet them trough iTunes in the iPhone directory. It simply looks as if I do not have the rights to acces the iPhone content at all.....
Anyone with this problem, too?????

Thanks for the replies folks. Sorry for the delayed reply, one night my phone miraculously started working. As far as the Edge settings go, I didn't change it to wap.voicestream.com because of my data plan issue. I'll have to call the dreaded TMo Customer Support line. It works at home and at work but not on the road for me. It's alright.
Has anyone found a good solution for Instant Messengers? I noticed that everytime i leave the IM window, it signs me off. Let's see if the call to TMobile helps.

T-Mobile can call their plan whatever they want. It probably isn't called the "iPhone plan" officially anyway. T-Mobile has no contract with AT&T or Apple.

Here are the EDGE settings for Cellcom Israel:
server: internetg
user: test
password: test
MAKE SURE YOU ARRANGE A DATA PLAN BEFORE CHANGING THESE SETTINGS!
The data plans are pretty expensive as it is (around 12$ for 120MB transfer per month).
Once you set these settings, you are automatically on the EDGE network, and it can cost a lot of money without a plan (one representative told me it's around 9.24 agorot per KILOBYTE!! Another representative said it's just 1 agorot per KB, so I'm not sure).
Have fun.

IMPORTANT
Read this first before asking questions:
What we know:
- You can pretend to activate your iPhone and use it like an iPod touch with extra features.
- You can (after a normal or pretend activation) unlock your iPhone and use it with apparently a good deal of non-ATT GSM carriers.
- There is a GUI unlock program.
- After a successful unlock, you cannot use visual voicemail on any network other than ATT.
- After a successful unlock, you can make and receive calls, use the internet, and use the other programs on the iPhone.
- After a successful unlock, you need to change some preferences to use the T-Mobile EDGE network, but at least one user has claimed success.
- It has been tested to be working on the following carriers with no problems:

What we are not necessarily sure of:
- Will this functionality become disabled with a future software update? Possibly, given Apple's recent comments (read:today).
- What happens for users who do not currently have a data plan? Will the phone avoid getting online other than through hotspots if you don't change the preferences?
- If this unlock works on absolutely every GSM carrier.
- Which data plan you should add to your current service.

Unlikely. The iPhone Dev Team hasn't said anything about a successful downgrade to 1.0.2 or unlock for 1.1.1.

I tried using that one, and all went well until I tried to SSH into my iPhone. I typed ssh -l root <ip> and then it asked me for the password, so I put "dottie"...then I got a # prompt. All good...but as soon as I typed "cd " when I pressed the space bar for the space, it disconnects from the SSH in the terminal. Tried loads of times, inc. copy/pasting but it always does it.
Any ideas?
Hello
I have exactly the same situation. After I ssh with root and pass, pressing any key it disconnects from SSH.
Any Ideas why is this happening?
When I go SSH using FUGU or Cyberduck works OK....but I really need to go command line.

Hey guys, I have a question about activation and unlock. I know there is no free unlock method for 1.1.1 right now. I'm going to buy an iphone from Apple store tomorrow and most likely it will be 1.1.1 firmware. I'm also going to buy the unlock from IPSF website. My question is how do I activate my phone before I unlock it? Do I need to downgrade it before I activate it? I'm really lost from all of these tutorials and firmware. Can you please help me with the activation? Please provide the link to tutorial if you can. Thanks

As I understand it, you have to downgrade to 1.02 first, then use Independence 1.2.2 to activate/jailbreak/prepare it for an upgrade to 1.1.1.. Once you've upgraded back to 1.1.1, you use Independence again to activate/jailbreak, followed by a special post-upgrade process through Independence.

helloo everyone.
I got it working on Rogers, vancouver, bc.
IF your having trouble unclocking/ activating... YOU HAVE to be patient until you IMEI is registerd. I was panicking thinking i F&^$ it up. But if you email the support team they can speend up the registraition.
I TOTALLY LOOOOVE THIS PHONE. I RECOMENED IT.
Also, if you want... call Rogers tec and ask them to disconect you from Edge. My friend just got a bill for a whooooping +$600.00!!!!!! He's freaked not knowing how he's going to pay for it... I feel bad. Don't take the chance. While i was talking to the rogers rep he told me the data rates are what is hindering the iphone progress to be offered to Canadians.
So... with that email me if you have any questions.

go to SETTINGS - GENERAL - NETWORK - EDGE and empty all infor in the EDGE SETTINGS and you will never accidently log onto ROGER rape ass data bandwidth at all... you may get a error sometimes for not having EDGE but I can live with that rather than pay a rape ass rate for data from ROGER...

If I buy one there, can I bring it back to London and activate it with O2 here?
.
I have a USA iPhone that I unlocked, I bought the UK iPhone on the 9th. While I was in the O2 store I asked an Apple employee if I could sign up to O2 with my USA phone? ANSWER YES, he told me to put the original ATT sim back in the phone, go to iTunes and connect, you will now have a choice of using AT&T or O2:p

After you do this, how do you get the access/connection to drop? Is it timeout based? I noticed that after I erased the EDGE settings, the phone still had internet access via safari?
Also, I assume that as long as you do not browse the web you will not incur any charges (i.e. there is no wierd background programs doing network access)?
Also, will iPhone always choose WIFI access over EDGE if available?
Thanks

I just bought one in Atlanta last Wednesday and it was 1.1.1. But its likely random based on stock supplies.
Try dialing *3001#12345#* from the emergency call screen and check the "versions" menu. If you have 04.01.13_G you are on 1.1.1.

Make sure you have a SIM-card with PIN turned off, and power on your phone (the supplied AT&T card works fine).

A PIN is the security code you can set on your SIM card.
So, make sure that you do not need to enter a code (a PIN-code) when you start your phone up.

You can downgrade to 1.1.1 to Jailbreak the phone (i.e. install 3rd party apps), but you can't currently downgrade to unlock for any carrier. There are some methods around for unlocking (such as Turbo SIM) but they cost a fair bit and may be illegal in some countries. The latest info from the dev teams seems to be that it won't be possible to unlock 1.1.2 until 1.1.3 (or whatever the next version is called) comes out due to changes in the firmware loader for the baseband.

if you got iPhone UK with 1.1.2, you have to first downgrade to 1.1.1 and than jailbreak by visting http://jailbreakme.com and installing oktopr application, which will make iPhone except the new version 1.1.2, than again u have to do jailbreak using (jailbreak.jar), once all done, you can use your O2 PAYG/Contract sim with iPhone .....if you want step by step instructions, do let me know i will try to more specific....
- downgrade to 1.1.1 from 1.1.2
- jailbreak using http://jailbreakme.com
- install OktoPrep
- update to 1.1.2
- jailbreak again using jailbreak.jar

I am going to Europe and I wanted to bring my iPhone along, rather than purchase another phone. AT&T's international plan is .99 a minute and that is just crazy. IF I unlock it, can I just buy a sim card there and pop it in? The minutes are much much less through local carriers there. THen, can I relock the phone so I can get all the updates and such through Apple?

to shed a bit more light on whether or not you have a software unlock available...
it is the bootloader on newer OTB 1.1.2 iPhones that's stoping the software solution. iPhones after week 45 have the new bootloader.
You can check which week your iPhone is by looking at the 4th and 5th digits in the serial... ie - xxx46xxxxxx
And wouldn't you know it, mine is a week 46 model.

EDGE settings (work like a charm, 64kb/sec):
APN: internet.vodafone.ro
User: internet.vodafone.ro
Password: vodafone
*note*
You need the new "smart" gsm sim in order to work.
Vodafone will provide you a new updated sim for free if you go to one of their local stores.
The old gsm sim (1998-2005) is not recognized by the iPhone.
I`m using an Iphone in romania with a new vodafone sim and it doesn`t work it doesn`t reject the sim but doesn`t transfer sim contacts or anything. The phone is unlocked and i used Iworld to setup romania as the usage country. iPhone doesn't transfer the simcontacts or anything. It's nothing wrong with your unlocking. You'll have to manually add them or sync them from your computer.

I am buying an I-phone, i live half time in europe and half time in america... it will be not so expensive for me to do an at&t contract, the cheapest version as i will get rollover minutes, and I will be able gain minutes as i will be gone at least half time.
Using the AT&T contract internationally is not a good deal so i will use the phone with my Italian Sim (TIM) as the phone provider with a data contract.
(i have a blackberry contract now which is for data 6 euros per month, plus the calling contract.)
the real question is if i come to italy, crack the phone, put in my sim etc. is it possible to reset it every time i come back to america and use the AT&T contract... do the good ol back and forth, choosing the best for both continents.
thanks

yes don't worry. I live in Buenos Aires and they work perfectly (unlocked of course). I hope you have a great time here.
Regards
Thank you, I just got to Buenos Aires and I'm having problem unlocking a sim card here from Movistar. Can you please let me know on which local Buenos Aires company's sim card that have worked for you?
I will really appreciate it.
Thank you.

(i have a blackberry contract now which is for data 6 euros per month, plus the calling contract.)
the real question is if i come to italy, crack the phone, put in my sim etc. is it possible to reset it every time i come back to america and use the AT&T contract... do the good ol back and forth, choosing the best for both continents.
thanks
thomas
yes you just restore the phone and then do the whole jailbreaking process again :D which is a pain

No need to restore once it's unlocked, at least with a true unlock method, preferably with an iPhone with 3.9 bootloader so that it don't need a sim hack.

I did the unlock yesterday ans it said i was successful. I put in a tmobile sim this morning and it showed Tmobile but i didnt get any signal. I turned it of and then back on but it shows slide for emergency and different sim detected. Whats going on ?????
You need to run the "anysim" app and it will work its by Conceited Software

I just bought an iphone version 1.1.2 and would like to know how can i unlock it?
i heard something about opening the iphone...can it break the iphone? what should i do?
Is unlocking with the sim free a good way to unlock or should I unlock by opening the iphone(hardware) or maybe wait for a software release?

you want to know how to unlock it? well you answered your own question there. :p
personally i'm waiting for the software unlock. but no one knows when that will be, even though there are people working on it it could still be a while off...
the hardware method would be okay if you're familiar with that sort of stuff, or if you take your time and read the instructions very carefully as there is the very real possibility of turning it into a very nice paperweight if something goes wrong.
as for the Turbo & Stealth Sims etc i refuse to pay so much for them, but it's the safer method to bypass the sim lock ATM...

to shed a bit more light on whether or not you have a software unlock available...
it is the bootloader on newer OTB 1.1.2 iPhones that's stoping the software solution. iPhones after week 45 have the new bootloader.
You can check which week your iPhone is by looking at the 4th and 5th digits in the serial... ie - xxx46xxxxxx
And wouldn't you know it, mine is a week 46 model.
I just used the above method to get the firmware version. The phone my wife got me has firmware version 04.03.13_G which would indicate I have a 1.1.1 but when I activated my iPhone this past Christmas, iTunes showed it as a 1.1.2 phone. So what's the real deal here? Do I have a 1.1.1 phone? I'm currently upgraded to 1.1.3. I'm thinking of jailbreaking and unlocking the phone. Which would be the best method for this phone? I've seen a bunch of methods online but would like to get some input before I jump ahead. I'm on a PC so I would have to use iBrickr. Thanks for the help.

well i suppose if you first went to activate your iPhone and it showed 1.1.2 then that's what you've got.
there's a few different ways you can unlock the phone now... i've just spent probably 8 hours this w'end and finally got mine unlocked... it seems like lots of the instructions leave out small details. but i finally had success using a PC, only needed the Mac for one part to snap it out of restore mode after restoring to 1.1.1. but i can't even remember what i did now... best bet is to check i.unlock.no, modmyifone.com and the Hackintosh forums...
good luck!

So is there any fix to this yet, or are all iPhones after week 45 hardware unlock only? I really want to buy one, but i really need it to be unlocked, and preferably software!

I'm a Cincy Bell guy too. Great deal for $14.99 for unlimited data and texting! My AT&T an T-Mobile friends' jaws hit the floor when they hear what I get for $39.99/month + $14.99 with no contract. :D I've pulled down 1.1 GB since November!
To set up EDGE for CinBell, go to Settings > General > Network > EDGE. Once there:

Can anyone answer this question: with the new ZiPhone, should I be able to purchase a new or refurbished iPhone from the Apple Store and unlock it, or is ZiPhone 2.5 not going to work with the most modern BL or baseband?

Sorry for the noob question, but I don't own the touch or the iphone, so I'm kinda new to this unlocking/jailbreak kinda thingy.
But wasn't there a website (iphonesimfree or something?) that charges to get your iphone unlocked for a fee? Now jailbreaking an iphone is FREE??
Is there something I'm missing in between?

iPhoneSIMFree (IPSF)was the FIRST unlocking method it worked from firmware version 1.0.2 to 1.1.2 natively. After 1.1.2 the company selling it stoped updating their site and hasn't been heard from since. You had to pay for it and register or it would not work.
The iPhoneSIMfree unlock still works on 1.1.3 and 1.1.4 if you use a small application called Signal.app to "kick" the unlock so it works.
After IPSF released their original unlock the iPhone Dev Teams used the unlock to find a free way to unlock - this was called AnySIM (and iUnlock before that).
One of the iPhone hackers called Geohot (who originally hardware unlocked the first iPhone) found a way to copy the IPSF method for free and released that as well. Right now IPSF and the free version of it do not offer any advantage over the methods and because they need Signal.app to work they are more complicated.
Currently there are 3 unlock methods in existance.
- Geohot's "Gunlock" used by Independence ONLY which downgrades all phones to 1.1.2 unlocked.
- AnySIM used by iLiberty+/ZiPhone - although it doesn't tell you that anysim is used on any of those applications and requires an old bootloader to work.
- BootNeuter - developed by the iPhoneDevTeam that uses AnySIM and a clever bit of bootloader hacking to work.
Jailbreaking was ALWAYS free. Unlocking was either free OR paid. Since 1.1.3 there is no PAID unlock officially from any company.
Before you ask - the safest method to unlock is using BootNeuter (which is part of pwnage - so read the pwnage FAQ stickied here at the top) and the easiest is iLiberty+.
AVOID ZiPhone at all costs as it is dangerous use either iLiberty or pwnage.

I just bought a i phone from the us and im in canada, so do i just go to rogers, get a simcard and use a online jail break?

You have to unlock AND jailbreak to use a different SIM card.
Jailbreaking is the process of allowing 3rd party applications.
Unlocking is allowing the phone to us different SIMs.
Use iLiberty.

I couldn't find a great thread to attach this to so for that I apologize. However, I need a software/app. developer. Looking to create an application for the iPhone. Send me an email if you can point me in the right direction.

SIMPLE MOBILE is the last company you should use they are selling this simm
and on there site it will state it works with your phone and in fact it does not and they give you a bull Sh_t storry that there site for checking has been down for 5 hours and will not give you a refund for the package ,
so is this a place you want to take a chance with it cost me over $62
305-890-9421 was the number they gave me for something that does not work even had the phone unlocked and it still is not working.
so go ahead and spend your $62 also
