I got a 22in from apple when they first came out.

About a month into it i noticed that i have 50 hot pixels.

I sent it in a few months later and they sent it back "fixed"

The fixed one had wires hanging out of it and 2-500 hot pixles. I sent that back.

After a few week of not having it they called and said that shipped a new one to me (refurb)

The refurbed arrived (also with many dead pixels) next day an other one comes to my door step, they sent me 2 of them, both bad... by this time the connection on the new ones where ADC and i had dvi on mine and my computer... after sending them both back, i was contacted by someone high up from apple.

She told me that she was going to send me a brand new one. I told her that my computer could not use a adc one. She called back later that day and told me to send my computer in (a 450) and my display and she would then send me a new 22in and a new 533 g4... I did, she did... I was told that this was not normal but they take care of people who spend $4000 on a display.

The new one has 3 dead pixels and i could NOT be more happy.

I use that display to this day.

but the 2 times they tried to fix my screen took almost 3 weeks each.

I have a NEC Multisync 1760v and have no dead pixels.:D This screen is absolutely awesome. The screen quality is way better than the Apple 17" (mine has 450:1 contrast ratio and the Apple has 350:1) and the pixel response rate is really great for gaming (16ms :D NO BLURRING!). I love this screen. I have the brightness turned down to 30% and it's still to bright. Even though it is on VGA I still think it has better picture quality than most DVI LCD's. It's great:D :D :D.

It was way cheaper too! I got it on Newegg.com for $391 after $20 rebate (not including shipping). :)

1 red stuck pixel in the 12" PB.... but not very noticable apart from in darker movies... called apple same day and of ocurse i didn't expect anything more than "we cannot take it back or repair it for 1 pixel" learnt to live with it and i am fine now... i will buy my next lcd (be it stand alone or laptop) from a reseller with a "no questions asked return" policy though. If i knew that amazon was taking them back i would have bought this one from them

20" Apple LCD, 6 moths old, no blown pixels.

Went in to an Apple store, asked them to get the display out of the box and fire it up, removed the computer's desktop picture and selected charcoal grey background. Low and behold, three pixels stuck on green.

Took the demonstrator for a bargain price! No blown pixels!

My last screen was a 17" Apple LCD. Bought it after viewing it also, no blown pixels. Before that (3 years ago) I was more green and bought an Apple 15" LCD. Never took it out of the box till I got home. Several dead pixels. But I learnt my lesson.

Never buy a screen you haven't seen!:D

Company Pismo G3 in 2000 had 1 dead and 1 stuck

Rev A TiBook 500 started with 1 stuck (green) then I started getting dead pixels, and then a 'shotgun' cluster of stuck pixels in the middle of the screen numbering upwards of 50 also had annoying backlight flickering on the bottomleft hand side.

Replacement screen had 2 dead pixels and 1 stuck, this number increased, also had annoying backlight flickering exactly like the first!

Rev C TiBook 1GHz, 1 stuck pixel (red) smack in the middle of the screen, sent back because of graphics card defects.

Replacement TiBook 1Ghz, delivered with 1 stuck pixel (green) managed to massage this out, and screen was perfect. But was delivered with a scratch on the lid, so this was returned.

Replacement TiBook 1GHz, delivered with 1 stuck pixel (red) on menu bar by Apple logo. But beginning to get some dead pixels now, also clouding around the bottom right half of the screen.

Also developed quite amazing occasional interference, see below.

Ultimately I've been very unlucky with Apple's LCD screens... and the screen quality of my current TiBook is frankly, f-in appalling, Apple will be getting a call as soon as I finish a project I'm working on!

Yeah I know... when it goes back in (3rd time in 6 months) I want a new screen though as well, with the stuck and dead pixels and this clouding, it's not really acceptable... especially for design work.

I've got a 2 minute QuickTime of my screen playing up, it's very intermittent I can go days without anything occurring and then it'll just happen, so with my video, I've got proof that something is very, very wrong with this laptop.

I'll be buying AppleCare just before my warranty runs out in January, because I don't have an ounce of trust in the TiBooks screen reliability!!

Hope your iBook stays well though... ;) :)

1997 G3 Wallstreet
2002 G4 PB 12"

No dead pixels.

Only screen problem I ever had was when the case broke on the Compaq and unseated the display cable.

That mess of a display looks kind of like what I see occasionally on my secretary's Compaq desktop running XP. It shows up in the file directory windows, but disappears when you scroll around. Our IT department doesn't have a clue. I guess I need to get video too!

I have a 500mhz iBook with ZERO bad pixels. I also have the 17" LCD connected to my 733mhz Quicksilver, and that has ONE dead pixel.

When I first discovered my dead pixel it really annoyed me, but I'm pretty used to it now. It's about 2" up from the bottom, and an inch or two left-of-center.

My father bought an HP notebook - not sure of the specs, but I think it was a 14" monitor - and it had a cluster of bad pixels. He called HP and they, at least at the time, had a 12-bad-pixels policy so it wasn't covered under warranty.

He returned it at the store he bought it from with a no-questions-asked return policy, and tested its replacement there in the store. Since it had a similar (but not quite as annoying) pixel issue, they marked it down by $200 or so.

So I don't feel so bad about my 1 bad pixel :-)

I have one stuck-on-blue dead pixel on both my PowerBook 15" and my NEC 18" LCD displays. Both were around from the first boot.

The PowerBook one is, at times, annoying because it's about centered on the screen, in the upper third... right where faces and eyes usually line up when I edit images in Photosthop.

My Gateway FPD1830 18.1" display has 0 deal pixels.

I'm really glad because I spent $400 on that monitor and money doesnt come easily when your in high school ;).

Ive been very happy with the monitor too. The only problem that Ive ever had with it was Microsoft's fault, when they supplied me a faulty driver 'update'.

I recommend Gateways display line: affordable (most importantly ;)), good looking, good quality, and plenty bright.

My 2002 iBook has 5:

- four stuck on red in a column at the bottom
- one stuck on green half way up the right hand side.

They've been there since I got the iBook, but I knew about them (it was ex-display) and given the size of the discount they gave me I've no right to complain!

There was a good article about this on Toms Hardware some time ago. Basically a "dead" pixel can be 1 of 2 things to most people. A really dead pixel will be black at all times. What you normally get are stuck pixels, or sub pixels. A totally stuck pixel will be white at all times. More usual are stuck sub-pixels. This will be either red, green or blue at all times.

Doctor Q
Aug 20, 2003, 01:55 PM
In theory, you could also have two sub-pixels of the same pixel stuck on, e.g., R+G, R+B, or G+B. That seems more likely than a pixel with all three subpixels on: R+G+B = white.

I have a cloud of hot pixels, like hundreds, green-ish, of various brightness although most of them are very faint (samsung 17" monitor) visible only on a black background. It happened since I wiped it off yesterday, with a lint-free cloth, dry, very carefully (not pushing hard on the screen). It's the first time I was cleaning it! I'm mad, but I don't understand how it happened? The screen was on when I did it. I should have turned it off? but still?! Great monitor otherwise, no dead or stuck pixels, just that big cloud in the middle of my screen now :(
Any suggestion / hint? Thanks.

That survey showed over half of the respondents had dead pixels. That is awful! In a world where we're striving for zero defects, and TQM, Apple is nowhere NEAR 1 sigma let alone 6! That's really a joke.

I'm a new iBook owner, and I have a stuck red pixel. It's only noticable at times, but now I'm questioning the quality of Apple Hardware.

I'm a dual PC/new Apple user, and I'd give Apple an A++++ in design, but I think their manufacturing quality ranks with Yugo.

Rumor about Apple's 30" Display if true then it's both an HD TV and monitor and likely to be expensive. The twist with the Apple design is that it is likely to be marketed as a true computer "monitor" and only incidentally, a TV with surround sound capability built in.

I have had a total of 3 Apple LCDs.. and none have ever had this problem.. Not my 3 year old iBook 466 12", not my 11 month old PowerBook 12", and not my year old iMac G4 15" either. I really think for the most part this is a non-issue..

The only display problem I ever experienced was 6 months into my old iBook the display started trashing.. but it wasn't the LCD's fault, it was a defective ATI VRAM. After insisting with Apple Care that I shouldn't have to purchase applecare to talk to them to convince them to fix it because I had the system test failure results on screen to read to them, they sent me a prepaid shipping container the very next day, and 5 days later I had my iBook back in full working order. They replaced the sub main board free of charge. I have always had excellent customer service with Apple.. but you also have to be firm if they start down some standard line of fee this or that.. these people are only as good as their training, and failing that, your results are only as good as your insistance and sometimes your persistance..

It wouldn't be a non-issue for you if you just spent $1300 on a new display and you had red and green pixels staring at you. I did my diligence and heeded the warnings of others, that's why I bought my ACD's at Best Buy - so I could take them back no questions asked if there was a problem. I'm just wondering now, if maybe Best Buy gets the rejects... Next time I buy an ACD, it will be a floor model at an Apple Store (if that's possible).
