Yes, thank you. I saw it when I visited apple.com today. It gave me an excited feeling. Now I don't know if I can wait for Rev B or not. A lot depends on circumstances. Must be patient.

Nice. Time to go see them at my local Apple Store. Too bad I have to wait until mid-week. Or maybe I don't, I'll call them today.

Don't they all come standard with a Superdrive? Can you get a "downgrade" to save money? How much of a savings could it be? Personally, I'd have gotten the superdrive. Burning to DVD will be the standard of the future if you ask me..... Either way, enjoy your new mac. :D

Yep, you can get it without a Superdrive to save about $200, but I agree that having DVD burning+iDVD will help with that extra measure of future proofing (plus another nifty gadget to play with)

what is your config and date of ordered? i have a BTO dual ordered on 6/24, which is shipping on or before 8/29... with express overnite shipping, next saturday, my dual g5 will be here! muha! i'm off to comp usa to see if they have an in-store demo i can play with, and possibly take pictures with on my zire 71... i'll let ya'll know. peace.
edit: fyi, i ordered mine without a DVD burner just because the faster i can pay this thing off, the better. and in all of apple's articles and things, it is always pointed out that 'even the superdrive is accessible for easy removal'. so i ordered extra ram from crucial because apple rips you on that as well, and i'll throw in my own superdrive as soon as i pay off my credit card and i can scrape the cash together. bottom line... we're getting g5's here, people!

Not ordering the Superdrive is actually a pretty good idea on machins that can handle dual optical drives. You get the Combo drive and $200, and Superdrives are now selling at around $185...save $15 and get a free CD-writing DVD player! Or wait a year and they'll probably be about $100. If you're short on cash, and buying a new Mac will do that to you, $200 is nothing to sneeze at.

10.2.7 for all non-g5 systems will be 'blackrider', not the same 10.2.7 'smeagol' shipping on the g5's. 10.2.7 will be in software update when the powerbook rev's are officially announced.

Well, my wife is just starting her video production business. She is working with an iMac and only just this weekend upgraded to 1 GB RAM (as opposed to the 256 she had stock).
However, she just got her first paying gig (donations of time and effort to charities provide GREAT PR for startups with that option) and now has 1-3 more on the horizon. As a result, SHE broached the subject of an upgrade to me. Heh...unfathomable G5 goodness nestled by her desk. *drool*
Suddenly my 15" TiBook (800 Mhz G4) isn't looking so hot anymore.

Is it only though Apple that you can get rid of features ?
I have seen it with some resellers, but not as much as Apple is doing it.
I really don't want a modem, it's only $30 you save, but still.

It's disgusting how the box it ships in looks. It sits there to merely torment me and remind me of how much longer I have to wait.
May have to bring a small bucket with me to the stores so my drool doesn't spill on the floor.

I didn't vote either way, but there are a couple of plausible reasons:
1. You're not getting one and are very jealous of those who are. :p
2. You don't believe they're really shipping.
3. You're miffed that the dualies aren't shipping yet.
4. You were hoping Apple would beat expectations and ship in early July!
5. You just like messing with people... :D
I find it amusing when people complain about negative votes, implying that any hopeful/promising rumors should be 100% positive because we should all love Apple unconditionally. Even the most exciting rumors can get negative votes simply because you don't believe it's really true, and that's a perfectly valid interpretation. What's wrong with that?
Regardless, it's all good. I'm glad those of you who are getting new machines will finally have them soon. For myself, my 733 G4 and 600 iBook will do just fine for a couple more years. By then, my new dual 5 GHz G5 with 32 GB memory will beat the pants off your shiny dual 2.0s. Oh, and it'll be a PowerBook....

when I ordered my dual G5 I made it BTO without modem. but then I thought about the fax feature and that I can't fax over DSL. So I changed my order to a Standard Dual G5, 2 days later. I might be further back in the waiting queue now.

I don't know about all of the resellers, but where I work, any configuration you can do to a machine on the Apple online store, we can do too. We just order it from Apple the way you want it.

If you are looking for someone to take that awful Powerbook off your hands, I'll do it. I won't even charge you anything!
Well, compared to my main machine, 800 MHz is looking none-too-shabby. My main system is a 400 MHz G4 PowerMac...it's decent most of the time, but I certainly wouldn't say 'no' to a new G5. I love seeing Apple's new revolutions, instead of just the slow evolutions...so when is the new kick-butt iBooks going to surface? My guess is that they won't surface until (if) the Powerbooks are equipped with a G5.

If demand is beyond expectations on the dual 2.0s, then putting the single CPUS in stores now makes good sense, to move those units and take some heat off the duals.

i do not see how that can be good:
because if someone switches from the dual to a single, they will still only buy X amounts of g5s.
so apple will lose dough per pop.

>>Dammit, I want my Dual. Who cares about the single proc models? NO ONE, that's who! =)
Dual 2Ghz mega-super etc....
But for my business, graphics and high-end photoshop work, I can't really justify it. Quark and Indesign won't need dual 8GB RAM etc; and neither for nearly all the time will Photoshop. And with Adobe quoted as improving the speeds in PS by upto 200% for the 64 bit architecture, I am wondering what on earth high-end video development £d rendering, Pixar-style stuff are all you folks about to be doing?????
I'm down for two 1.6 ones, and a cheap new G4 (which I notice Apple are still cannily manufacturing to plug the hole at the bottom end (as it were) and a 1.8.
As replacements for our 7600; G3 beige, G4 450 (which for reasons beyond anyone in the apple universe, won't install 10.2, and a G3 over-clocked blue, they'll make all my colleagues happy bunnies and I'll keep the change.

Well, we're midway through the day today, and so far noone has posted either receiving their box being shipped to them, nor has anyone said they've gone to the store and checked them out. "Now Shipping" my ass. I'm sorry, but when Apple does stuff like this it bothers me. How can they say "now shipping" when you can go and put a G5 in your shopping cart and it says "4-6 weeks?" That's pretty misleading.
I ordered mine a month ago, and there are people who ordered theirs before that, and THEY don't even have theirs yet. And now Apple puts an ad on there website as if people who ordered one right now would have them shipped out today or something!
spaz
Aug 18, 2003, 02:04 PM
matt, it's not misleading. the press release says they are shipping the single-processor machines, starting today. that doesn't mean everyone who orders one today is getting it right away, nor is that insinuated. anyone who ordered one previously knows when it's coming because it's on their Order Status.
now if they'd just ship my 2Ghz dual machine i'd be in heaven...

There's plenty of time for Apple to change that today. Let's face it it can say 4-6 weeks, but get shipped tomorrow. Plenty of times I've ordered stuff and had it shipped much sooner than expected. Alas, no G5 order though.
Also, just because no one on this board has mentioned it has shipped to them, doesn't mean Apple hasn't shipped any. Just no one's here!
Chill out.

A fellow checked his order in the apple store today, a Dual 2Ghz, and the ship date had been changed to early September , from early December. He came in hoping to see one of the floor models.
One: he is telling the truth, which kinda bugs me as my ship date is still October 3.
Two: He is confused about which tower he ordered.
Three: He is making it all up.
I didn't see the actual order screen, as peering wide eyed over a customer at his financial information just isn't good manners.
But I wish I had anyway.

New dual 2.0 orders now are getting "on or before" end of Oct. That is consistant with Apple's website which says 7-10 weeks shipping time. I'm sorry to say, but your "friend" is messin' with ya. No way he would have got an early Dec.

It's a SONY I don't know what model number yet. And yes it's wise to order the Combo because you save $200 and you get a free Combo when you swap it out for a SuperDrive you buy aftermarket for less than $200.
Then just throw the Combo in a FireWire case and you're all set with two drives that both read DVDs and CDs so copying is not a problem in either format with Toast 6.

If you have no such FW CD-RW drive, I'll settle for what it rips from the Internal SuperDrive (16x) or Combo (32x) Drive.

They should be shipping (and I'd expect the dual 2ghz G5s are coming quite soon) due to Apple trying to charge my Apple Loan last night...
I'm just curious why they tacked on another 70 bucks for my G5 (i'm guessing another charge for shipping... I ordered an ipod at the same time... looks like I dropped a heap on shipping an ipod then). I'd get that question answered, but it appears that the folks at apple that handle order issues are in a meeting today... great timing.

I bought my Power Mac G4 (digital audio, 533Mhz) without a modem option. Last week when I was dusting it out I noticed It has the modem module in the back (screwed into a different position to hide the jack) and the cable going nowhere. If someone can show me a layout of this motherboard (like, where the modem connector lives because I can't seem to find it) I might have a free modem.

update on the superdrive dealie... i'm almost 100% positive after a lot of investigation that apple is using the sony DW-U10A, which is the OEM version of the DRU-500A. it was sony's first muti-format dvd burner (i'm sure OS X just disables the dvd+r), and it retails for a shade over $200.

A friend of mine near the Sacramento assembly line/plant reports that (what he saw) 14 FedEx trucks departed from there this morning (an average day sees about 8 trucks - 4 morning 4 afternoon trucks), and another 7 trucks in the afternoon.

I really don't want a modem, it's only $30 you save, but still. I think there are two excellent reasons to keep the modem.
1. Backup dial-up access to internet in the event of broadband going down which it does from time to time.
2. FAX built into Panther will be a good reason to need that modem from time to time.
It is $30 well worth spending as insurance that you will be glad you did when either of these needs arise - and I am sure they will.

The fax feature might be ok, but I really don't need a back up modem ( knock on wood ). I have had cable modem for years and it has never been down for more than a day at the most.

Actually there is a card that you have to plug into the mother board, it's about the size of a credit card. The Modem jack runs to the Motherboard, which in turns routes it to that Modem Card. If you're modem port was covered, that just indicates that you don't have the modem card installed. They do that to make installing the modem easier, and not take a PCI slot. As well, they hide the modem jack so if you don't have a card you won't think you will, but leave the port on, cause you can always buy the modem card later to add it if you like.

But doesn't the Sony DVD writers all have 24x CD-R capability? Pioneers have 16x. The specs on Apple's website say 16x, which would indicated a Pioneer drive (plus Apple has used Pioneer's in the past). But, just get the combo drive and you can put whatever you want in.
Under OS 10.2.6, only the Pioneer A05/105 is supported natively. I think A06/106 and the Sony burners require the user to modify a file. I sure hope 10.2.7 and Panther support the Sony drives, cuz with faster CD-R speed, that is what I would like to put in. But only if supported by Apple. Otherwise I'll just save a few bucks and put in a Pioneer 105.

That Apple is really shipping them. They just saying that they are "now shipping." Or else someone out there would have received an email from Apple saying,

I called 1-800-apple today to modify my dual-2.0 order. I decided that I will transfer the AE card from my current machine and save myself a couple bucks. I call up and make the change. I check the website a while later and my ship date slipped from 8/29 to 10/30! Two months! They cancelled the existing order and replaced it with a new one. On top of that, they also changed my graphics chip from the 9800 to the 9600, so I'll have to deal with that too! I should have just left it the way it was.

Our original order date was that day (or the day after, I can't remember.) I know that it will ship by the date indicated on the order, but my point is, someone out there had to be the first, (other than a reseller that is) and as such should have got a confirmation email. That is all that I saying. :)
The stores all ways get the first shipments, then the rest of us.

I called Apple today, asked why if I order online, it says "4-6 weeks". She said, and I quote:
"'Now Shipping' means we're shipping to those who pre-ordered systems. You won't be able to get a system upon placing an order until late September."
unquote. Sure, stores will get one, maybe two, for display--but forget picking one up for awhile.

I was walking up Kipling toward University (on my way to University and Bryant) and there were 2 apple store employees carting a stack of at least 5 of the now familiar black boxes into the store. What would you do if you saw the G5 boxes in person? Run to them. One of the employees told me they were all 1.6s and they were to setup the display after hours that evening. That's it. :)

I was somewhat stingy. You may note Dell charges $50 for the analog modem Apple charges $30 for.

Apparently (based upon another news report) right now the Apple Stores are just receiving the G5 tee shirts, not the G5 computers (no joke). However, the actual G5 systems are supposed to arrive at the stores fairly soon (should be before the end of the week). So it's possible that the G5 boxes that people are reporting may only contain shirts, not G5 Power Macs. As yet, and as far as I can tell there have been no actual G5 deliveries. It may be that the "now shipping" announcement only means that the systems have starting leaving the factories in Taiwan. Thus, it may take several days for the air shipment from Taiwan, clearance through customs, and the final ground distribution to the sales channels.

Anyone who ordered direct from apple should have them by end of this week/beginning of next. I think it took about 5 days from the time it left Taiwan to get my powerbook. No guarantees I guess, but someone's gonna get one real soon. Probably someone in the Alaska/Washington area, but oddly enough it goes to Indiana after that if I remember correctly. It's gonna be whoever lives closest to one of those FedEx distribution centers.

You may be correct, however, all of the reports have indicated that the motherboards are manufactured in Taiwan so I guess I assumed that they would be assembled there also. However, now that I consider it, since the vast majority of all motherboards are manufactured in Taiwan I guess that doesn't necessarily mean that the final assembly has to happen there also.
If they are being manufactured in Sacramento then they should start arriving today (at the latest). If only in Ireland then the same caveats on delivery apply.

IMO, anyone who ordered one of the dual 2.0 GHz G5s has about zero chance of seeing their system __before__ the end of August. I know, Apple is saying 8/29, but I suspect that those systems won't actually arrive until well into the first week of September (at the earliest).
True, one or two more weeks of waiting really isn't too bad, but I suspect that many of us are anxious to see how these systems really measure up in the real world. When they do arrive the G5 Power Macs will arguably be the most advanced PCs on the market.
However, I don't think they will offer performance that will set them that far apart from current top-of-the-line Pentium 4 PCs. Thus, the dual 2.0GHz G5 will be much faster in a couple of select cases, similar to P4s in most cases, and slower in a few other tasks. Overall, I suspect that they will be P4-comparable but not really world-beaters in raw performance. Whether their elegance and overall superb internal design will "win out" will depend upon how well they have actually been implemented (i.e. let's hope that there are no obvious flaws in the hardware design and that they more-or-less work as advertised).

I just called Apple regarding my order. Basically what the guy told me was that the Duals won't start shipping until the 29th (next Friday). He said that there's a good chance that even though my order is slated for September that it would go out on the 29th, but not to hold my breath. But anyway, no duals will be shipping until the 29th according to him.

Can you provide a source for this information? Like I said, I've read several reports on the various rumor sites that indicate that the G5 motherboards are being manufactured in Taiwan. And these were not based upon user reports, the sites were actually posting "news" that the G5 motherboards were being manufactured in Taiwan. But, of course, this "news" could have been incorrect.
We know that the G5 processor is manufactured at IBM's East FishKill facility (and possibly at other U.S. sites), and at the WWDC Steve Jobs even made a point of saying that the processor was made in the USA. However, as far as I know Apple has never publicly stated where the motherboard is being built.
