Why can't I drop my songs onto my iPhone playlist?

So, want to use the iPhone at the gym. How come I can't drop and drag my songs into the iPhone's music list?

I am really bad and dumb about it all, but I have imported my cd's and now want my music on my iPhone...

Never downloaded a song off iTunes in my life -- is that the ONLY way to get music on my iPhone? I don't get it.
 
Umm.... create a playlist and sync it, thats all..... look under the Music tab when you select the phone.

I suggest reading he online manual......
