It looks like the 1995 World Rally Champion, Colin McRae has been killed in a helicopter crash in Scotland.

It is a sad day for motorsport if this is the case.

BBC News 24 just said "the helicopter crashed on his land" and that "the 2 bodies haven't been identified". They haven't outright claimed it as Colin McRae just yet.

Edit: Well that's the BBC for you - http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/more_sport/article2461339.ece. Apparently he died and his son is feared dead too.

Rally driver Colin McRae and three others are feared dead in a helicopter crash near his Lanarkshire home.

Not good news to wake up to. :(

EDIT: I'm slow again.

Why 'feared' have they not recovered bodies yet ? Surely his family know if he is missing and was on the copter or not ?

Either way sad news. :(

They're pretty sure he is dead, but they have to wait for confirmation.

Such a shame. Pretty sure its him now as even his manager hasn't contacted him.

In such a short space of time we have lost Richard Burns and now Colin McRae, two of the best British Rally drivers ever.

Sad day for British Motorsport.

Don't forget Michael "beefy" Park, in 2005, as well.

Yup, it's terrible. And Steve Fossett too (although officially he's still "missing").

Every pay your respects to Colin McRae. He was a legend of rallying and motor sport as a whole and loved for his go for it attitude. He will be sorely missed by a lot of people with this unfortunate loss.

Will they change the Colin McRae rally game franchise's name now?

I don't think they will because it's a way of remembering him.

Just thought I shared that comment, made me kind of smile. His voice guided me through many turns in his games.

That's it, I'm never getting in a helicopter in my life. When a plane has engine failure, it can presumably still glide to an emergency landing. When a helicopter has engine failure, it turns into a free-falling steel coffin.

Auto rotating(What a helicopter does if it has an engine failure...), although not as simple as gliding, can be achieved if you can get the helicopter to descend fast enough. The trick is to keep air moving across the blades so that they can keep there momentum and keep spinning. I think it involves disengaging the prop shaft from the engine. Basically I'm just saying that there are methods to survive in a helicopter. Hope to see you in the air again soon :p

This was one of the biggest shocks for me. It's always hard to lose a hero. Our thoughts have to be with his family and friends especially because his only son died too.
He has done more for rallying than anyone, he was a household name and when Valentino Rossi dedicates his win to Colin we realise how involved Colin was in all sports. He was a the most famous of rally drivers. He won just 1 championship though he deserved so much more. One of the Best Ever. Its hard to lose him after Richard Burns, "Paying tribute to Burns after his death, McRae said: "He was a true character in the world of rallying and will be sadly missed."

Those words apply equally to McRae himself.

I will remember him alongside Burns, Michael Park, Richard Sainct, Fabrizio Meoni, Andy Coldecott and even Senna and Earnhart on road. All great motorsports men who died in their prime.

All weekend long my boys and I raced against his AI in DiRT for the PS3. We had a blast. Then we saw this on the news this morning. Tragic :(

Not McRoll! :( All those crashes in a rally car, and he dies in a helicopter. :( With two young kids no less. :(

Not to be callous or disrespectful, but I bet Subaru has a special Impreza model named for him soon. They've had two for Burns already (RB5, RB320).

Yeah, I had been watching gameplay videos of DiRT for the PS3 on YouTube and stuff for a couple of days, then got on here and seen this thread last night. Sucks. :(

I had never actually seen him race that I can remember, but I've known who he is for a while because of his game franchise, etc. My condolences to his family and friends. :(

OMG I feel so ashamed.....
Living across the smallest pond just to the east of the UK, and didn't know this!

How terrible! :(

First Richard Burns a couple of years ago, and now Colin McRae....

BTW... Feral (http://www.feralinteractive.com/?section=news&id=206&language=english) decided to postpone releasing the game due to this tragic accident:
It is with great sadness that we learned of the death of Colin McRae last Saturday in a helicopter crash that also took the lives of three other people including his young son Jonny.

As a mark of respect for Colin and his family, we have decided to delay the release of the game "Colin McRae Rally Mac" that was scheduled for September 25th. We will update the site with information regarding a new release date at an appropriate point in the future.

Ridiculous that everyone else postpones the game, but Sony go ahead and market the game just after his death.

A very low move.

 It's not exactly ******** on his memory or anything is it.

The game should've been out the day after, no better tribute to the man IMHO.

I agree.

I said earlier that I hadn't actually watched Colin race. Well, I checked out a bunch of footage on YouTube and man, that guy was TALENTED. Amazing driver. R.I.P., Colin.
