USB port and CD not showing up on iMac

I am running OS X 10.4.1 on an iMac Intel Core2Duo. If I try and use a USB flash drive to save something to or a CD (blank or recorded), neither one is showing up on my desktop. I ran Disk Utility verify and it showed that my disk is okay. What's up? It used to work flawlessly.

If you mean they're just not displayed as icons on your desktop, then check Finder>Preferences>General and make sure the checkboxes are checked for what you want displayed
