I have a 5gb and a 15gb... and I have a similar problem with my 15... every now and then the buttons don't bring any response from the pod... but it usually works a minute or so later... kind of annoying... makes me miss the real buttons on my 5gb.

I have the rev3 10GB, but now I wish I had purchased the 15GB like most people have - it's a much better deal. BTW, I'm having the same problems with unresponsive buttons. It's usually the Menu button that won't respond until I press Forward or Backward, but then I lose my place in the current song! The button stick doesn't happen that often so I'm not too upset.

I don't have one, but have half the money required for a 30GB ($449 business discount) and an Apple Loan... I'm just afraid my Mother would kill me for doing such a thing.

I've had the rev2 10gb iPod for just under a year. It's all beaten up, scratched, scuffed, smudged with oil or grease. The thing goes everywhere with me. I pluged it into my car before it was cool, I had to buy an RF modulator and install it behind the dash instead of just plugging in something from belkin. I never thought I could be %100 satisfied in spending $400 for a music player but I am

We're a 2-pod household now. I've had a 20gb since November and I just bought my wife a new 10gb.

I've worn the same pair of shoes every day for 2 years, yet, dropping $800 on two mp3 players doesn't faze me. Go figure.

20GB and 5GB models. Bought the 20GB first, right after it was introduced. The 5GB model is an original which had been on display in an Apple retailer. It was almost free, but in very good condition, only a few small scratches. Battery life was 12 hours in nonstop straight play!

20gig, (rev.2 i believe)

had an archos jukebox go out on me months after i bought it - have had the ipod for about a year, without a single problem.

even bailed me out when my powerbook went kaput - i was able to transfer most important files the ipod before apple had to replace it.

Lucky me to get this poll today. Just got my 30 today. Have been playing with it for a few hours (ok, a lot of hours) and no button sticking noticed so far.

Did have to brag to my son who was show casing his win mp3 player he got for $60. First, was the price. He finally gave in when the capacity of 30GB sunk in. Second, he tried to say how easy it was to install ("put in the CD, load the software, plug it in, two step configure and boom - done Dad!") what fun I had when I just plugged it in and was running. I still am laughing about that. Lastly, he decided to go after the battery life. His can go through just over 400 minutes before having to put in new AA's. I told him the 30GB was rated for 9 but dropped it to 8 hours and it still beat his.

Wife played with it for 10 minutes and even said "cool". I think a second iPod will be in the future.

i have the 30GB iPod myself. the 2.0.1 software really fixed a lot of issues i was having with it, and i enjoy mine a lot. i would never have paid $500 for it though. luckily, i got it as a graduation present, so i didn't even have to deal with that issue.

I still have an original 5GB and it still works fine.
I had a 20GB, but sold it this spring due to lack of funds. It was a shame to sell it as I had purchased it at the Apple store in NYC moments after they first went on the shelves, and it was a trouper.
I won a 10GB 3rd Gen iPod from AOL earlier this summer. It was a contest tied to a beta test of AOL Parental Controls. That vindicated the $4.95 a month I have been paying to keep my old AOL address.
I could easily fill a 30GB iPod, but can't quite justify the purchase right now.

No problem with unresponsive buttons on my iPod (10gb rev2) but what does annoy is that it occasionally likes to skip the first song in a playlist. I don't remember seeing this wierd behaviour noted elsewhere and don't know what's causing it. It's almost as if it's taking it's time waking up properly. Possible hard drive issue?

Of course it's just as likely I'm doing something daft. Be interested to know if anyone else has experienced this.

Amazingly, my 5GB iPod is nearly 2 years old ... I can't remember the last time I used a device so much for so long despite their being available newer and cooler versions ... HP200LX? Newton? So it's been at least 6 years anyway ...

I find 5GB a good enough size, makes me use discipline and keep track of what's there.

I have the 30 gb iPod. I love it. :D

My one issue is the nonresponsive buttons. I don't seem to have this problem as much as I originally did, but it's frequent enough to be annoying.

Does anyone know if this problem is related to hardware or software?

These buttons work by way of shifting electrons (electrical current) due to a large mass at the other side of the plastic. Not all things that create these shifts are somebody using it so the buttons have to calibrate the offset away. That means that the sensitivity and the threshold need to be adapted on the current environment levels. There are two versions: software calibration and hardware calibration.

Normally this is done each half a minute or continuesly. This can be an indication of the delay you talk about. Maybe you have a mass or moisture on the iPod and it takes some time to take that into account before it *correctly* signals your touch as a touch.

Also there can be a functionality that prevents the detection of a touch of the neighbouring buttons. With these kind of buttons it's possibly to press a buttons and create a (smaller) current shift in the next button as well. The interfacing circuitry has sometimes the possibility to lock the detection of touches for a certain time if one of the other buttons detects a signal. Maybe you are holding it in the wrong way or is a defective casing the problem.

I don't know if Apple uses the hardware of software system, maybe a firmware upgrade can solve the problems by changing some timing or thresholds...

I have the 10 GB (rev. 2) since November. I originally thought when the 5 GB came out, "I don't have use for that. I listen to all my 90-something CD's in my car."
Anyway, my girlfriend at the time (now my wife) suprised me with my current iPod for my birthday. So I ripped my entire CD collection and left the uber-wallet home. Couldn't be happier! :D
Now with AAC, I'm re-ripping them all again as we speak. Over 2400 songs and counting!

I have a 15GB iPod and love it! I actually needed the space for the 2400 songs, and I have less than 4GB free. The only thing I've noticed is that I have to 'double click' the menu button when a song is playing to get it to work (honestly they probably explain that in the manual, but who has time to read the instructions on a new toy? :D ).

I'm not that hard on my iPod and religiously keep it in the case that came with it, but even that has given it a few minor scratches, but that's not my biggest concern. The one problem that I have is the outer casing on the end of my remote (the end that connects to the iPod) has separated exposing the inner wires. (For those curious it goes White, Blue, Green, Yellow, Black, Orange) It still plays fine, but I'm wondering if this will cause the remote to fail soon. Thank god it's still under warranty!

I have a 30Gig. Love it. My wife and I just had a baby and the iPod been playing classical music by the baby bed 24/7. The baby seems to love it too

I don't know if you realized that you don't have to re-rip your Mp3s...just convert it to AAC from the advance menu.

30gb and loving it. no button response problems here (running 2.0.1), though whenever i see a 10/15gb, i am mildly envious of the thinness of those models. but i've filled over 21gb, so the envy is usually short lived

am thinking of picking up the navipod IR remote and/or the battery pack. any reviews?

You're right, but you'll lose a little quality if you do that. do a search on the boards for mp3 to aac conversion - there's a thread somewhere (I'm lazy) about this very thing...

for casual listening, it's fine, tho. just know in the back of your head the CD quality is better...

<???>An iPod beginner's question: If your entire iTunes collection fits in your iPod, it's easy to sync. But what if your collection does not fit in the iPod? How do you control which songs are downloaded to the iPod and which are not, and keep it within the proper size?</???>

so if i have 700 songs in mp3, is it really worth re-ripping into aac? i have plenty of storage left on my 10gb, and half the time im in the city, so i cant hear details in my music anyways, is it worth the effort? will i have aac compatablitliy issues later? (I.E. Burning cds for backup...)

I put that i own a 30 gig, but i also have a first generation 5 gig.

I just bought my 30 gig and am having a problem. When i have it plugged in using the dock and then put the computer to sleep overnight with the ipod still mounted, the computer will not start up any applications once it wakes. All applications freeze on start and the finder is frozen and i have to restart for anything to work. If i eject the ipod but keep it plugged in, the computer wakes fine.

does anyone know why this is?

I have a rev3 10GB and more often than not, when I choose to play a song in the menu, it immediately skips to the next one. really frikkin annoying. I wonder if this is a software or hardware problem? If it's not fixed by an upcoming software update in the next 9 months, I'll just have to send it in right before my warranty runs out and get a brand new shiny one! gotta love apple's repair policy.

By the by, this is my 3rd ipod. I had the first one (5GB) replaced because of crappy battery life. The firewire port on my replacement broke loose from the circuit board after 4 months, and during dissection, either I or the electronic fixit guy who resoldered the firewire port knocked loose one of the little thingys on the board, causing incessant crashes. This, of course, happened after my warranty was out. So i had to buy a new ipod. I love it so much, except for the above mentioned problem, and the damn proprietary dock > firewire cable i have to carry around if I want to connect it to a computer away from home! argh.

I have a 2nd generation 10gb iPOD and I recently bought my wife a 3rd generation 10gb too. We both love them to bits.

When I was buying my wife's device, she casually told the sales rep in our Mac shop that she didn't need a case as she wanted it to get scratched and dirty (with said salesman's jaw hitting the floor hard  ). After about 2 days, she purchased a rubber jacket and regularly polishes all exposed metal and plastic. Ha!

Best investment I've ever made.
