iPod ipod wont restore

So i plug it into my iMac aluminum..its a 80gig white

and it says "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes"

then i click OK

and then i hit restore! and restore again

and then iTunes just shuts down? what do i do? thanks

its iTunes 7.4.1 in 10.4.10
