View Full Version : iPod touch Hacking Status?

Just a quick request for info.
I have been searching for sites that contain info on hacking the iPod touch and have come across a few that seem somewhat lame. aka, they are just waiting for someone to hack it and then they will d load them and provide them to us, which is fine and needed of course. However, I am looking for a site where a real team of hackers might be posting about this stuff, thought I know its not in their nature. I also realize that this might be a dumb question, but have you guys run across anything interesting that is along these lines.
If so please post it here. I'm sure more people other than myself are looking forward to this kinda stuff.
Thanks!

Wtf - no the itouch hasn't had jailbreak succesfully run on it, so it's not hacked yet. just stay on digg and youll know when its hacked.

bueller?....bueller?
People are working on it as we speak. There's progress, but not a ton. There's a page where you can make a donation and hopefully hasten the hacking... as well as an IRC channel discussion. I feel a bit weird posting the channel details for fear of it getting overloaded causing them to lose progress. If you look around on hackthepodtouch.com or ipodtouchhacks.com I'm sure you'll find the info I'm omitting.

No it hasn't.
They don't have the brain trust dedicated to the iPod touch that the iPhone had/has. Also, Apple has changed things up that are making it much more difficult. There is concern as well that Apple will utilize the new encryption process on the iPhone when they come with one of the big updates.

Apple bought the rights asap, and did hire the hacker that unlocked the iPhone.

If it's not hackable/maintainable (ie. every new update from Apple doesn't have to b rehacked) I'm going to be a little disappointed... at apple. Since the iPhone has come out I've been happy to see that Apple was doing nothing to block the cracking of the thing. Infact, I kinda felt like they wanted it, and maybe they did for good press...etc. However, now it seems like they have changed their attitude and want to be in control of everything on your ipod. I really wish they had just put the apps on the iPod to begin with. Why cripple the thing? I realize its good business, but come on Stevo, put yourself in our shoes!
Thanks,
Arisian

Unfortunately for the overly optimistic, the iPod touch will have the features & functionality that Apple envisioned for a good while to come.

It will be.. it's just a matter of how long. Pretty much every device has been hacked to some degree, and I can't see a small device like the itouch having that much protection in it compared to real toughies like games consoles.
If someone manages to jtag the thing they'll have its secrets within a day or so. Don't think the ones working on it at the moment have access to that kind of hardware.
Seems a shame to run OSX then have it run about 3 apps...

And this, folks, is the understatement of the year!
Haha, I agree with that completely. However, there are some neat workarounds I found, ie, the txt viewer that someone posted about earlier. Infact, I used that for a good while last night. It wasnt great, as in a real hack, but it got what I needed done
thanks,

It will get hacked, but if Apple want to stop that it will be a "game of cat and mouse" as Steve Jobs put it, just like the PSP really. The hackers always win in the end though, nothing is completely secure.

Wirelessly posted (Treo: Opera/8.01 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/3.1.8295/1710; en; U; ssr))
I for one, am confident in the iPhone dev team. Sure, not as much interest as the iPhone, but it will come my friends, it will come!

Jobs was referencing unlocking of the iPhone, not Jailbreak, installing 3rd party apps, etc.
But...if jailbreaking aids in efforts to unlock the phone, then Apple will probably try to prevent that.
Hopefully, we'll be able to hack our Touch's soon. After that, we can always skip future firmware updates that don't add significant new functionality until they are hacked.

Just like on my PSP :D 3.52 M33 rocks!
Bit off-topic, but is it true Apple hired the guy who unlocked the iPhone?

I hope thats the case. However, they do have alot of bugs right now and I would assume those will be addressed in the newest of releases. I have no doubt that it will be unlocked for apps... I kinda would like to know where they are in that process

Yes, I agree- the first firmware update will be good just to correct bugs. But I think there's a good chance that one won't break any hacks, because they still haven't found a way to hack the Touch yet anyway (for Apple to try to circumvent.)
Later updates might, but then it's more of a choice between 2 positives- maybe Apple adds some features, and you decide what's better. Later new firmware updates will eventually be broken too, so at worst it will hopefully just be a waiting game.

true, I also thinking hacking the Ipt wont get as much/any press converage so it will be an under the radar type operation. Also, there is much less to lose from a person with a hacked IPT versus a hacked iphone. There's no one like at&t to get all pissed about it.
I was just thinking I would really like the ability for coverflow to get possible artwork for me since the IPT has wifi.
I know apple has said that they arent going to add alot of functionality to the ipod touch because its 'just an ipod' while they are really promoting the iphone right now. I think they have to keep there market share and 'shoot for the moon' with the iphone where, with the mp3 player market, they have that pretty much wrapped up. It's amazing that you have people who have owned 2+ ipods over the years.
thoughts?

Agreed. Perhaps in a few months they will be able to add some new Touch features 'under the radar', if the iPhone has been clearly established as a success and not a flash in the pan.
I really like the idea of fetching album artwork. Although to be honest, there are good apps to do that on the desktop, and it probably makes more sense to do it there.
I would at least like lyrics display though- I figure that's gotta come in some future update.

yeah, there are good apps out there for that. Im really weird about putting an album on my Ipt WITHOUT the album art... i dont like to do it.
It's alot of fun talking about the applications that WOULD be nice ... and there are alot of sites out there that are talking about iPhone hacks and listing them and what not. Im considering doing a site dedicated to ipod hacking... i konw they are out there, but I think it would be nice to have a request page and links from a community of people rather than one blogger.
I can think of 4 dozen things (simple!) that i would like to have on my ipt... i would also say that its served me in the last week very much like a handheld computer. I loaded up a bunch of notes I had for a talk on it yesterday and it worked perfectly. Ive been storing account information for hosting, banking, and other things (minus password!) on it. Its really more than an ipod and I think apple should capitalize on it... or the hackers should. I dont mind buying an app I guess.
thoughts?

Yeah, the multi-touch interface opens it up to working in ways that no one has even thought of yet (or until recently) because other devices don't work that way.
For example, think of presentations. Wouldn't it be wonderful to have you presentation notes on your ipod and instead of managing a stack of notecards or a large piece of paper just flicking through your ipod (on the other hand, people could think you were doing something else with it!).
Better yet, flicking through a powerpoint/keynote presentation, and even being able to pinch things bigger.
Actually, both of these might work if you make things photos, but dedicated programs would be much better.

Yeah, tons of uses. I love the thing. It makes my treo 650 jealous. sometimes I forget that its just for music
btw, some dude cracked the checksum that keeps the ipt on itunes (rather than linux based/other media players)
Quiet interesting, however, cracking a checksum has litle to do w/ getting me some good ol' fashioned hackaronis on my ipt..

That's a different hack entirely. They just got it to work under Linux with non-iTunes software.
