Browser problems

I’ve been having a problem with my browsers crashing unexpectedly. I launch explorer or Netscape and get the message that the ‘application has unexpectedly quit-no other apps affected’. This comes up before the browser window or menu bar appears. I have reinstalled both browsers- doesn’t help. I’ve created a new account and I can run both browsers fine so it appear to be something with this account.

I’ve deleted several .plist files in this users preferences folder including:
Internetconfig and anything with explorer in it.
Nothing helped.

I don’t know if there is a connection of if it is just a coincidence, but this problem began shortly after I installed Safari. While explorer and netscape were crashing, Safari was working fine for a while. Now Safari is starting to crash unexpectedly, but usualy after starting up when I try to download a file to my computer. Because of this I’ve removed Safari and any safari.plist files but this hasn’t helped either.

I’m running a G4 1Ghz dual processor with OX 10.2.6

Does anyone have any ideas?

I recently saw a post from 'Goggles' that sounded like they had the same problem. They traced it to ~\Library\Internet Plug-Ins\QuickTime Plugin.plugin.

I removed this plugin and it fixed the problem. I'd love to know how a file in the root directory only affected one user account.

Also, what does removing the quicktime plugin from the library folder do? Any downside?

I would imagine it means QT files will no longer be able to be played from within your browser.

An unusable QuickTime preference can cause Safari to quit when you click on a media link. To check for that issue, follow these steps:

1. If Safari is open, quit it (Command-Q).
2. Click the Finder icon in the Dock.
3. Choose Go > Go to Folder.
4. Type: ~/Library/Preferences/
5. Click Go.
6. Locate this file: com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist
7. Drag the file to the desktop.
8. Reopen Safari.

If behavior is back to normal, move the "com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist" to the Trash. It will be recreated as needed by Mac OS X.
