Walt Mossberg's rave review for Touch

While he laments Apple's choice to leave out things like Mail in order not to cannibalise iPhone sales, overall he is very impressed. Obviously, his screen is fine and he loves it for video.

That's a nice review. He mentioned something I hadn't even thought about - the ability to control the iPod through touch without looking. I do that now, even to the extent of being able to turn the volume up or down through the outside of my pocket.

Yea the battery life is short. At least I got more iPod add-on then a Apple store does.

As for mail I got a phone and a .mac account to cover that.

The best part is I don't need a laptop to connect to the net. Just turn it on and go surfing.

The touch isn't really designed for 'on the go' listening - even to change the volume you have to take it out of your pocket and fiddle with it, which is inadvisable in a city if you want to keep it very long... and it's a complex enough UI that using it in a car would be horribly dangerous (but we have in-car stereos for that). For office or home listening it's fine though.

Also, some early iPod Touch units have had defective screens, where images appeared too dark. Apple says this problem affected a small number of units and is being remedied. My two test units displayed beautiful images.

At long last. According to someone on the official Apple iPod touch discussion board:

So I just got off the phone with a very nice Apple tech service guy because I wanted them to repair and hopefully replace my screen for the iPod touch. At the end of our conversation, he said to me that they "recently" shut down one of the two LCD manufacturing plants where the iPhone and iPod touch screens were being produced.

Sounds like they're taking some steps forward at least...
