I have a new HP all in one unit. It works great and the drivers and software all loaded fine. Still, I am unable to print "fast draft". Just as the guy above, I'm concerned about all the ink used for printing out everyday crap.

In the Print dialog if you switch to ColorSync there's a Quartz filter that can be changed. There's a few options there like decrease brightness, grey tone, etc. Do any of these meet your needs? I don't have a printer so not something I run into. You could always switch to using grey text :)

I also have the same problem. Sent for HP driver loaded it and still can't seem to select draft mode printing. Works fine on my PC laptop. A little disappointing on my new Mac.

From the Print Dialog Box: Select Print Settings from the Drop Down Menu > Mode: Advanced > Quality: Draft.

I pulled up "print and fax" dialog but at least with leopard,I found no drop down menu.

I did however download the full drivers and support files for printer but still nothing that I can find

I struggled with this for half an hour, before looking here, found no answer, looked again, and felt like an IDIOT...

Yes I'm using leopard.

When you click print and the dialogue box shows up, next to the printer theres a little down arrow, slightly misleading at looks as if the menu is already expanded... contrarily... it actually is not. Click said arrow and the menu will expand.

Located between the orientation icons and the radio button for Print header and footer, you will see a selection box, click the arrow and select Paper Type / Quality and then select your options for printer speed etc. All of the options for printing are contained within the options selectable from the dropped menu.

Its a print that uses little ink. Its not great quality but it saves a lot of ink. I use it all the time for unimportant things

hmm great I'll have to use that because pretty much everything I print at home is unimportant, haha. I print the good stuff at work if needed.

If Fast Draft is like a "Quick Print" sort of thing, I need help too. But I have a Canon PIXMA iP1800. I can do it on my Lexmark printer, but it isn't compatible with my MacBook. So does anyone know how I can Fast Draft or Quick Print with the Canon Pixma?

I don't think so. Maybe it's just with the Canons. Or an OSX flaw.

Thank you. :) This has been driving me crazy ever since I installed Leopard and downloaded the newest drivers for my HP printer. Now my question is, will this keep my printer set to FAST DRAFT or do I have to do this every time I print? I have a job that requires me to print out tons of things during the day and I want the default setting to be FAST DRAFT, but I can't find any place to make it so (unless this works). I'm not at work right now to try it out so I thought I'd ask in case I need to do something special tomorrow morning when I get there. BTW, I have an HP 4280 Photosmart printer if that makes a difference.

Is there a way to set FAST DRAFT as my default setting? Now that you all have shown me how to get to that option, I don't see any SAVE or APPLY buttons to keep it there. I do a lot of printing at my job and opening all these windows to get to fast draft every time is almost as slow as printing in normal mode. :(

THANKS

You should use the "Presets" drop down menu to save the settings you want. It's the one just below the printer selection menu, always in the same dialog box (look at the above pictures).

Maybe I'm just not getting it, but that's where I found the option to use Fast Draft, but it doesn't save the setting. Every time I want to print, I have to go there again and reset it. How do I keep it set to Fast Draft.

This printer is shared by the Windows side of my computer and if I could get it to save that setting as the default, I'm pretty sure I could use the Fast Draft on that side as well.

Thanks.

Are you saying you used the "Presets" menu to save your settings and it didn't work?

You are an angel--thank you. I never even noticed the Preset menu. Before I installed Leopard, my printer menu was entirely different and it was easy to set to whatever I wanted. This one now (thanks to you) works fine on the Mac side. Unfortunately, on the Windows side of my computer (which I'm forced to use at work), it doesn't. So I'm stuck with slow, ink wasting printing there. You'd think since the printer is based on the Mac side and only shared with the Windows side, the Mac setting would work for both, but no. :(

Thanks again!!

Not sure if this may help but Macs also have the former Unix utility, CUPS (Common Unix Printing Service) installed and printers can be managed in this way. For access to this, type the numbers 127.0.0.1:631 into your browser.

Hi there! I was also wondering this same question myself... feel stupid for not seeing that "drop down" arrow that's there all this time I've had my mbp... Sigh. :P

Anyway I also have a Canon i860 printer. You can save ink in the Quality & Media section by clicking on "Detailed Setting" >> dragging the print quality to "Fast" >> and perhaps checking the box for "Grayscale Printing" if you don't want to use your color ink.

I asked the same question not too long ago and got an answer, but since my printer is different than yours, I can only give you some guidelines. Go to the drop down menus in your printer settings. I think I found it under Quality Settings on mine. If you look further into the replies to this thread, you will probably find pictues that will help. Sorry to be less than specific, but I'm sure you will find your answer here. :)

Ok this works ONLY when you print something that requires the print dialog box to come up. What about when it doesn't? I like to print coupons online. However, since most of the websites send the coupons directly to the printer and do not require the print dialog box to open it bypasses this setting and prints on normal, which is the default setting on the printer itself. On a pc you can change the default setting on the printer itself by going to the printer and clicking properties and change it there so EVERYTHING will print on fast draft even if it bypasses the print dialog box. Is there a setting on the mac for this. I have spent two days looking for it and have gotten no where. I am wasting mass amounts of ink printing my coupons because of this quirk. I can't believe this one option would be lost when changing from pc to mac. Please help.

"Most websites send the coupon directly to the printer..."

Websites... don't do anything of the sort... websites don't have any protocols for sending anything to your hardware, they are simply a collection of lines of code that is interpreted by your browser.

Concerning your browser, Safari, to the best of my knowledge, uses the same GUI to select printer settings as shown elsewhere in this post. But, if you tell me what website it is that you're referring to, and what browser, I can most assuredly find you a solution.

kruzin00

I don't know if this will help, but usually if you select Print from Safari, File (at the top of the screen) it will bring up the print dialog box whereas if you select Print from the webpage itself, it will go directly to the printer, skipping the dialog box. I hope that helps.

I too, an new to mac, and have been trying to figure out how to save ink. I am running Leopard, Version 10.5.7, and when trying to print, get a menu that acts differently than earlier posts. I do not get the option to change from Standard to Advanced, to pick draft form. It does not give you the choice.

(See the first attachment.)

Instead, there is a button below, that originally read as "Copies and Pages" under that, I selected "Printer Features" then got into a new menu. The 4th option down: "Print Quality", could be switched to "Draft" but even this did not work, and it printed in high quality.

(See the second attachment.)

It was a large 50 page pdf that I was trying to print, so I instead stopped the print... and started up my older PC to do the printing. I'd also appreciate help in trying to figure this out. (I'm trying to get over my issues of switching over to mac, spending more money, and not being able to fully use the thing... the new imovie that was loaded onto this white ibook also can not export to tape.)

The options you have are dependent on the brand and model of printer you have. The previously posted images were for a Canon printer, whereas yours in an Epson. You may want to visit the Epson site to see if you can locate a more recent driver for Mac.

Using my deskjet 3845 to print, when the print dialog box opens, my selection box no longer contains the option to select paper type/quality, etc.
It used to. Used those settings regularly for almost 5 years.

Unfortunately, I didn't notice when they disappeared on me. I assume it was with an update, but embarrassed to say I couldn't say exactly when it happened.

To be clear, when I click on the dropdown, I see "TextEdit, (a divider) layout, paper handling, cover page, scheduler, supply levels, summary". (screenshot attached).

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I've got stuff I need to print and I'm burning through ink like crazy.
Thanks.

(imac, 10.5.8, deskjet3845 tried driver 2.7.1 and 3.3.3)

Use the CUPS print facility I mentioned earlier in this thread. Type 127.0.0.1:631 into your browser to access it. Navigate to Manage Printers, select your printer, then select Set default options... you'll fin the option there to set your printer to Fast mode. You'll be asked for your usual User Name and Password to change the default settings of your printer.

I'm having a similar problem. I have an old Macbook with an old HP Officejet g85. I was always able to print in draft mode. Now that I upgraded to a Macbook Pro my g85 no longer allows me to print in draft mode which is a drag. Anyone out there have a solution? I have Snow Leopard 10.6

This appeared to be the answer to my ongoing printing problem but once I get to "located between the orientation icons and the radio button for Print header and footer, you will see a selection box", that box isn't there for me. In fact, there is no orientation box or radio button there. Has anyone else had this problem? I'm about ready to chuck the mac out the window!!

i just dont want all my printings to be taking up all my ink

you should be able to do the print in econ mode.
If you could opt to epson rather than hp, I suggest you buy a very cheap but fast printer, epson artisan 50, and also install a continuous ink system such as
http://www.inkrepublic.com/members/SteveMathieu/review.asp

then you will have no fear of using out your expensive inks and save the hard earn money..

You're amazing.

One would think the Mac would be more intuitive.
I just bought a new wireless printer and was setting it up with all my computers, both Macs and PCs. The macs took more time and the lack of "draft" setting was getting to me.

But, now I can print in draft mode and it is set to default thanks to your help!!!

Thanks!!!
