I couldn't wait any longer, so I took the plunge and bought a Mac Pro. Here's the specs:
Both Bluetooth 2.0+EDR and AirPort Extreme
iWork '08 preinstalled
Apple Wireless Keyboard and Apple wireless Mighty Mouse - U.S. English
Two 16x SuperDrives
Accessory kit
Two 3.0GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Mac OS X - U.S. English
4GB (4 x 1GB)
250GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s
ATI Radeon X1900 XT 512MB (2 x dual-link DVI)
This is going to be my first Macintosh. Any tips :D?

That is a great system!
Hope you bought the ram elsewhere though, for a bit of saving :)
It will last you a long time.

Very nice choice. My tips are to get a copy of David Pogue's "The Missing Manual for OS X Tiger" from Amazon. That book explains everything you ever wanted to know about the OS in understandable detail. If you plan to update to the new OS 10.5 Leopard, which is due out in late October, then reserve that same book but about Leopard, not Tiger.

Thanks for the tip. I was wondering what if anything I should read to get acclimated to OSX.
As for the RAM, while I could very easily order and install some from OWC, I decided to just spring for the RAM from Cupertino so it will work out of the box.
My hope is get VMWare Fusion running so I can just dedicate one of the processors and half the ram to the virtual session if I need to do some work (ASP.NET programming) at home.

I bought a similar system - although 3.0 4-core - about a month ago. This was my first Mac for 10 years. I have to say there was a bit of an adjustment period from XP, but it was painless. I also bought Pogue's book before I got it and it was a good read, although I haven't really looked at it in the past couple of weeks.

Oh. Well either way, the point is there should be enough resources for the Mac and virtualization to run well simultaneously.

Damn. I feel like I should get one now too. My G4 is getting slower and slower by the minute. There is even a delay typing now. Do I wait til Tuesday to see if any magic happens? Or at least wait til Leopard? I will be pissed if I bought one now and a new one ships with Leopard.

by the time you get your new MP's (sometime in 2008) we will be updating ours by the time yours are 12 months old making you the new old mac owners club, one big circle, yada yada yada
We are all up there with beastie machines, all equal in our choices at least we are all looking down on those poor peecee owners with windows and that ever present error box in the middle of the screen,
As mac users we should all live in peace ;)
not pieces :( as most windows users machines end up.

Nice man! Congrats. I love this machine.
You could've went the refurb route, I saw them going for $3,349 with 2GB of RAM and an ATI X1900...but oh well! I wish I could get the refurb so I could squeeze in a 30" ACD, because I paid $4,300 (Minus the RAM) in the first place...but it's all good.
Have fun with the Ferarri :D

O.T.
Computers don't normally slow to the point where they can't keep up when you type these days if you keep them clean. And when I say clean I mean inside and out. I am typing this on a G4 400 and it is as fast as new. I make sure I delete stuff off the main hd to keep ample space open. I put in more ram so I never page. Plus I airhosed the interior. Lots of dust. We also have a new mouse, keyboard and Tiger making it feel new. Of course you could have seen a MP in action and now everything else feels like slow motion.
Now on topic, I am jealous of all you MP owners ;)

Now that Apple today announced that Leopard will not run on anything G4 800 Mhz or lower, I'm waiting for a MP with Leopard installed. Even if an new MP is announced tomorrow, I'm waiting until it would ship with Leopard. With a PowerMac G4 733 and Imac G4 800, I can't buy and install Leopard anyways. Why pay an extra $100+ for Leopard when it will come included on my next MP.

the wait will be worth it, but when it arrives, remember to bend your knee's when you pick it up, the MP isn't exactly a lightweight, ive lifted lighter refridgerators :p the time will soon fly, ,mine arrived 3 days ahead of ETA, it arrived 2 hours after the extra 3 hard drives and speakers arrived from a third party supplier, so i had a great few days .................. let the good times roll :D

By half? I don't think Intel has gone that far yet with their processors. Unless you're comparing a Quad to an Octo core...

I would assume he was talking about quad to octo..since..they SHOULD go to all octo..or at least a octo for the same price as the current 2.66 quad, bc they are the same prices for the processors.

My guess is they'll probably offer a 3.0Ghz Quad Core for the "Base" with newer processors. So I doubt they'll offer the Clovertowns as base.

Aren't the 2.83 quad penryns the same price as the 2.66 dual woodcrests were when they came out? So they should be able to offer them at the same price point as the current "base".
doing all oct mac pro line, would i think open apple to have another computer line inbetween the imac, and mac pro.

Thing is, when they upgrade to newer processors, they have to change motherboards etc...they want to use newer components with higher Front Side Busses, so putting in a Clovertown or a Woodcrest in a newer motherboard which has 1600Mhz FSB and higher speed RAM will yield to bad results. It's not as simple as putting processors...

Of course you realize that the quad-core chips in the Harpertown line are the same price as the current Woodcrests, right?
Your proposal would more than likely mean a price drop if 3.0Ghz dual-cores are offered as the base. Of course, I will continue to point out the problem with your suggestion shortly.
If Apple decides to go 1600Mhz bus, that poses a problem for your prediction. As the only dual core 1600Mhz chip will be 3.4Ghz and will be priced at $1,172 http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=8656
Of course the dailytech article leads us to believe there will be more dual core 1600Mhz bus chips. But, at nearly $1200 for 3.4Ghz I can't imagine what the others will cost. And, with 2.83Ghz quad-cores at nearly half the price, $690, I don't see the point in offering dual core chips any longer.
Now, there are the Wolfdales, the dual core version of the 1333 Harpertowns. The closest speed to what you are proposing is the 3.33Ghz chip, priced at $851. Again, a quad-core Mac Pro would cost more than an all octo-core line base model, based on these figures.
There is the 1.86Ghz Wolfdale priced at only $177. But that would be a step backwards from the current lowest option of 2.0Ghz. Apple could do it, but it wouldn't be the base model.
So, your assumptions are way off. As I, and others have said an all octo Mac Pro line is very likely. I understand what you are attempting to do, but do some research first. Because the chip you want to use doesn't even exist.

I said the 2.83 quad penryns, which is the harpertown processors, which one go with the SS MB etc. I never said they would put clovertown or woodcrest, they would have to be stupid to do that.

An all octo core Clovertown setup? Makes no sense (just like most of your posts). Apple only wants to change the CPU's during a BTO, not change RAM and the motherboard.
From what I've seen, Apple is either going to go to the 1600Mhz FSB w/ newer processors/Ram/Motherboard, or it's going to stick with the current line and offer the 2.66 8 Core as "Base".
I'm sure they have the dilemma of how to do it right.
