View Full Version : Actually, no rumors of new Mac Pro coming soon...

Despite our constant projections and speculations based upon the Intel roadmap, doesn't it concern anyone that there haven't been any rumors at all regarding a new Mac Pro at 9to5, MacRumors, MacUser, etc???
It does me. Me thinks that Apple thinks the current MP is just fine, and that their client base, ad agency production people and the like, actually agree.
I am really starting to think that there won't be a new Mac Pro for some time, and that the 2.66 will be with us for some time to come.

I sincerely believe (hope) that they're working on new case designs and that involvement in this is limited to a core set of people within Apple, hence no leaks at this stage.

Only a little over 3 months until Macworld. It looks like a nice update will come out then. Apple should have something impressive enough to show the public by then.

I don't get it. They would have to update it. If they are going with the slogan, "The Fastest Desktop Computer Ever," than it's currently NOT by November.

PowerMac uh..............ProMac is long overdue. The case has been with us for a long time now and if imac and rumored macbook get aluminum then you know the others will have something else, gold, silver, wood, plastic, titanium, who knows but apple will make it distinct.

There's nothing wrong with the case design. Sleek, elegant, effective. I don't keep my computer on a pedestal for people to look at anyway.

I use a G5 dual 2.5 PowerMac at work so I know full well what they look like and what's more, how heavy they are. There's no need for them to be that size nowadays; we'll hopefully also see a return to an enclosure that can hold more than 2 hard drives.

I wouldn't worry about it. We may have had leaks this past year on things, but not everything gets leaked. Besides if we are talking mid November that's still 6-7 weeks away. I don't think we will see a case redesign, so there isn't much left to do. Infact I wouldn't think there is even much for Apple to do on a pro machine rather than alot of testing, choosing components and making sure drivers work. Not the level engineering that goes in to other products.
I said it in another thread, but right now Apple offer the fastest 4 and 8 core workstations you can get with Intel processors (GPU options aside). No reason to think they won't continue to try and do so.

Its a workstation, not a normal desktop computer. The weight is right in line with other high end workstations such as the HP XW8000 series. Needs to be made of thick enough material where sound and vibration can be kept to a minimum. Powersupplies can weigh a lot and a workstation needs to have a hefty supply to feed multi processors, heavy video cards and multiple drives.
Fast workstations also need adequate cooling which means large coolers. A good cooler can weigh 1-2lbs on its own. If you have two processors, you can easily have 3-4lbs right there.
Plus the computer is only like 45lbs and its not like people drag them around on a daily basis :)

I'd personally like to see a return to something the approx dimensions of the G4 towers... which were also called workstations at the time. There's no doubt that at some point there will be a new case design for the Mac Pros and I would wager they will be smaller.

You're absolutely right about the Mac Pros; I stand corrected, thanks. It's been a while since I've specced out new desktop machines for the studio and judging by budgets, it'll be a while before I do so again.

see post in another thread commenting on this but the big thing that surprises me is the lack of updating the video cards in the last year. I mean it's been a year now since I got my system and there are no video card upgrades.
I'm placing my bet on 1Q08.

The Mac Pro is almost twice the weight of the PowerMac. If they make it any heavier or bigger it will break the stand, that I have the G4 on. It's about time a redesign happened, hopefully slightly on the lighter side.
But hell as the important stuff of the MacPro has been ignored so much, a redesign is never going to happen.
No rumours of a new Mac Pro, we shouldn't really be suprised, the Pro User is no longer important to Apple. it's the gadget boy's and fanboys that are Apples main market, stuff those who use macs for a profession.

There is no such thing as perfect... what may suit you, may not suit others, and to think that the MacPro cases won't look different externally or internally in 2-5 years time is to wish for the extremely improbable.
The G3/G4 PowerMac cases lasted a good while, there's no reason to think these won't be the same, but change they will.

If they wait until January and announce at MacWorld (which by all accounts was a complete BUST last year), then that would mean the Mac Pro would have been essentially untouched for a year and a half. At that point, the video cards used in the Mac Pro would be 2+ years old. Also at that time, the video cards would be at least three generations behind.
For those who will pipe in and say that the added "option" for the dual quad-core chips was an update, and that the thousand dollar RAID card was an update, I and the vast majority here wholeheartedly disagree.
Regarding the dual quad-core option. That was released to Apple well before it was released through the retail chain. This leads me to believe that Apple has an excellent shot at acquiring the new Harpertown chips and the SS motherboards before the "official" November 12th release date. That being said, I think we will see an updated Mac Pro when Leopard is released, possibly before.
The main concern is: what is Apple going to do about the video cards? Their iMac video card choices concern me. Apple can save the day and release an 8800GTX or GTS 640 meg as the midrange card, or they can screw the pooch and offer only underpowered cards and a high-cost workstation card.
Also of concern is Apples product focus. With the iPhones and iPods, Leopard was forced to slide. The Macbooks and MacBook Pros have had several healthy updates in their lifetime, the iMac is all new, and even the severely neglected mini was updated. The Mac Pro has the dubious distinction of being the oldest and most neglected product in the lineup.
It will be very interesting to see what video card options Apple chooses. If they are indeed underpowered and under performing, this will bee proof positive that no one at Apple reads the Mac Pro feedback they have been receiving.

Really? On the floor in the office where all sorts of dust can get into them, on the floor where I can't access the optical drives easily or the front USB port. You seem to have pretty prescriptive ideas about these machines. We'll just get on and use ours as we see fit...

Sep 24, 2007, 02:16 AM
If they were supposed to be floor models, I would have assumed they would have put dust filters in the front as well as putting the USB ports near the top of the case as well as the power button close to the top where it can be easily reached.
I think they are better suited on a desk. Plus why even risk having a computer on the floor when it can get kicked or bumped into by accident. Imagine if someone accidentally bumped their shoe against a pen drive that was sticking out and bent the USB port... I dont know maybe I'm paranoid that way. My computers always go on my desk. Plus why put such a nice case where it is hidden from eyes?

I have built several PCs in my time, currently have 4 pc cases in my basement, and I can tell you, the mac pro is no bigger than my smallest one. I wish people would stop comparing todays mac pro with yesterdays G4 case. The G4 case was the most ugliest case in the world. The mac pro case is by far the nicest. On top of that, the handles are what make it SEEM big. If the handles were not there it would be like 4 inches shorter. Its really not a big case. Look at the Dell XPS 720 case. Now that is a big freakin case.

I'm in favour of the ground based location for the Power Macs/Mac Pros. Got one at home & a couple at work and tried them on the desk, but it looks like something from Land of the Giants. Don't get me wrong - love the style of the case, just think it looks a bit blatent putting something that (apparently) big on the desk.
As soon as the kids start pushing play-doh through the grill, I'll move in on up, I guess ;)

I am looking to buy a Mac Pro towards the end of the year. But, if there isn't an update for it then I won't be buying it until there is.
I plan on decking out the system pretty heavily, so I want to make sure its going to be one that I enjoy for a few years. The current look isn't bad, its just rather dated.

My message to them:
I have waited for months now for a new Mac Pro to be released. I have been using my Macbook to get by, but I require more power for my needs. I certainly hope that a new Mac Pro debuts sometime in October or November. At this point in time, I can not justify the purchase of the current Mac Pro, between the last generation of video card choices and the new line of Intel Xeon Quad-Core processors, which are slated to be released on November 12th, it makes it impossible for me to justify the purchase of a Mac Pro right now.
I hope that the new line of Mac Pros will all feature two Quad-Core "Penryn" Xeon processors, a minimum of 2GB of RAM, and a choice of high-end video cards (i.e. ATI 1GB X2900XT or the 768MB nVidia 8800GTX - either single or dual video card solutions), and a minimum of a 500GB hard drive (and/or a choice for a 160GB 10,000 rpm Western Digital Raptor as the main OS/Applications drive).
Is there a time frame for a debut of a new Mac Pro? I hope my long wait pays off soon with a new generation of the Mac Pro.
Thanks.

I can't figure out why some of you are cracking it. harpertown/seaburg isn't shipping yet... so what do you expect a new Mac Pro to update to? being tied to Intel means that Apple is subservient to Intel's timelines for new platforms. You're better off reading PC forums about when new Intel stuff is coming out... that will give you a clue when new Apple stuff is likely.
Personally i hope the Mac Pro uses the Skulltrail platform, as then I can run full speed SLI on it for my Vista on Bootcamp (one can dream I guess).

We know it isn't shipping. We know the timeline. Check the other threads. Most people aren't expecting an update today. However, Apple has gotten things early before. So it is possible although unlikely for something to happen this week. My guess is still with Leopard.
Speaking of being informed you should know full well that the Skulltrail is not going to be in the Mac Pro. Whether it be a dream or not, telling people they should go read PC forums but them spewing off some unrealistic wish (more so than people hoping for something today) is annoying to say the least.

Woah steady on the angry pills!! As for getting stuff early, that was only 3 Ghz quad Xeons. only 1 example. Apple had to wait until the Santa Rosa platform came out to update the iMac and the laptops, so I wouldn't assume that Apple automatically gets priority access for everything Intel has.
And whats wrong with dreaming that Skulltrail ends up in the MacPro? It would be perfect for a lot of people who for whatever reason have to straddle or choose to straddle windows/Mac. So what you're saying is one cannot have a wishlist without your approval? O my apologies then your 1337ness.
And Pc forums are very useful now. hate on them all you like, but they have more/better info on upcoming Intel stuff. Some of the guys on xtremesystems get engineering samples and happily talk about what performance to expect. I wouldn't be the only person here who reads both this forum and PC forums.

I also do not understand the need to make these machines smaller. They don't use the visual design tricks of other case manufacturers to make the unit seem smaller, and are about the same size as other machines of similar processing power. Inside, they are full size workstation machines, holding 2 optical drives, 4 hard drive bays, and quite a bit of memory and card expansion.
I don't think we will see a huge visual change in the design for a while; realize most of the "design" on a mac pro is on the inside, and the machine is completely different than the G5 predecessors internally. I would welcome a visual change, but I dont feel the machine looks particularly dated or out of place with the rest of the Apple Line-up.

I thought everyone kept their machines in the spotlight. After-all, isn't your Mac the center of your universe? ;)
.... Not really. But, surely there are some who do. Personally, I care more about function that pretty. I'd be perfectly happy if the Mac Pro still came in a beige box like the old G3 and pre-G3 systems. As long as it's reliable, who cares what the box looks like.

I'll be buying a Mac Pro when they ship with modern video cards. It doesn't make any sense that this will happen until after Leopard, though, because Apple would want to avoid having to support Tiger with the new drivers they'll need for the next generation of cards. If you ask me (and I realize that nobody did) this is a large part of why we haven't seen more modern graphics cards all summer. I'd bet that Apple had planned to release new graphics cards before now, but pushing back Leopard's release has prevented them from doing so.

I guess now I understand the appeal of bluetooth mice and keyboards!
Exactly, I think that if leopard wasn't delayed until now, we would have seen updated Mac Pros (new cards)

That's why apple owes us. Hopefully for this Leopard delay, we get some new MacPros with it or at least 1-2 weeks after.

Does anyone have the exact revision dates on Mac Pro's? The average time in between revisions? Has Apple ever really held an event for Mac Pro's? Do you think they will be released in the background on October 14th with the release of the all new notebooks?
Give me a sign!

no updates on the Mac pro in 2008. Macworld 2009 will be when they're announced.

Here's a sign. THIS THREAD PREDATES THE PENRYN MAC PROS. There will be Nehalem Mac Pros the Tuesday before MacWorld 2009 in January.
Or thereabouts.

That's what happens when google brings up forum threads on the first page ;)
And if history has taught us anything expect the Mac Pro 1-3 months after other big companies start offer workstations. So while Macworld, or around then might be appropriate and seem logical, it may be as far away as March.

I wouldn't put 100% faith in this bet.
They could just as easily let them go around for another year, they did it last time.

The "last time" you are talking about they only had expensive quad cores as an update, there was nothing to upgrade to but quad core, which they added.
All of their lines are up to date within 3 months of the released hardware. While that's a terrible time delay, it's the way it is.
The Mini doesn't count for the 3 month rule :p

Personally, I love larger cases. It leaves lots of room for more upgrades, and makes it much, much easier to replace components.
A smaller case would make it extremely difficult to change the internal components. Not everyone has small little fingers, you know. :p

I thought MacWorld was for consumers not professionals? Have they ever announced a Pro at MacWorld?

Give me a sign!I see Nehalem Mac Pros in Q1 2009. I don't see a MWSF release because MWSF is for new Macs or at the very least redesigns.

This thread is over a year old, and the topic is outdated since Mac Pros came out in March of this year.
